To dread bank holidays?

I wish we didn't have bank holiday weekends. I've got 2 pre school kids and family stuff I have to go to.

I just like our routine and I like my job and I struggle with bank holiday weekends. It just seems too much time to fill. The noise is constant. My mum is difficult and expects certain things. My 4 year DD is very full on and often has mini meltdowns. She just wants to watch screens or she is so hyper (think loo rolls being run about, her emptying the washing machine, stuffing food down the back of the sofa).

I just feel I should be all positive about not having to go to work but I miss it.

Am I being an old misery guts?

I prefer them as I hate having to do the school runs and homework etc, bank holidays mean staying in if we want, winging it etc, but it's easier now the kids are older, it's hard when they're younger op so I empathise.

girlfriend44 · 07/05/2023 14:48

Like them when it's sunny. Like the roads being less busy.

BrutusMcDogface · 07/05/2023 14:50

I only work four days a week (Fridays off) but have decided I’d quite like Mondays off permanently, too! 😜

That said, all 4 of my kids are school aged so those precious few hours a week are what keep me (a little) sane.

BakewellGin1 · 07/05/2023 14:55

I love a Bank Holiday as every other week I work 5 days so hugely appreciate an extra day to spend with both DS.

Oldest if 15 so has loved lounging around.

Youngest is 4 and has loved our trips out.

Ive enjoyed spending two actual days with them and still having tomorrow to enjoy a Sunday lunch, walk on the beach and clean up/prepare for the week.

Iheartherain · 07/05/2023 14:56

I hear this. I don’t work Thursdays and Fridays and I’m generally longing to get back to work by Monday anyway so another day feels like a lot!

Toottooot · 07/05/2023 15:02

Delighted about it - 3 year old will be in nursery and I have a day to myself. Happy days.

missingeu · 07/05/2023 15:02

I'd love a bank holiday off, instead I'm working (nurse).

Tumbleweed101 · 07/05/2023 15:03

I'm loving them, my first real break since my mum died in Jan and it's given me time to just catch up with 'me'. Work place being closed means I won't be asked to cover any sickness so can properly switch off.

Now that would be good! Unfortunately, DS’ nursery is closed but still have to pay!

I don’t begrudge the lovely staff a day off … I’m pleased for them. Honestly. But arghh!

gingercat02 · 07/05/2023 15:07

Love them! An extra day off is always welcome.
Just do what you want.

We had a walk yesterday.

DH and DS are at a football match later, I'm meeting friends for drinks and then all home for the Miami F1.

Tomorrow a day at home probably and tea out and cinema in the evening.

grinner83 · 07/05/2023 15:08

@Iheartherain how can they charge you when they're closed??? That's madness! Mine were at nursery full time but we only paid for the actual week days in the month. I know it was a long time ago (they're 15 and 12) but wow!

ConstanceReid · 07/05/2023 15:10

I don't work Mondays, so all these bank holiday Mondays are annoying me.

Daffodilwoman · 07/05/2023 15:12

No I’m glad I will have time off from my full time job. I’ll be able to see my mum and get sone jobs done.
Why not take your child out into the open air, somewhere like a huge wood/playground/park/national trust property.
Ifs she is addicted to screens then that’s on you.
I say this as a mother myself who had no family support when my dcs were young.

It’s fairly standard, isn’t it? I thought so, anyway.

That’s just a bitchy comment @Daffodilwoman. and if the OPs dd is 4, then she was toddler age during the first lockdown which may well have heavily contributed to over reliance on screens given even the good old playgrounds, parks and national trust properties were closed for months on end.

Manic period at work, I do 80% so losing another day in the week is making life very stressful at the moment

This, 3 working days to lose in a month, following Easter is a lot.

Might be now but wasn't in the good old days 😂Do you pay a set amount each month then? When mine were in nursery they calculated the number of days they were booked in that month (because different months have different numbers of week days) and charged accordingly. Obviously if the kids were ill or we were on holiday then we still had to pay, but if the place was closed then we didn't.

FrownedUpon · 07/05/2023 15:25

How can you dislike an extra day off work? It sounds like you don’t like your family or spending time with your children, which is a bit sad.

I think it's more the sheer amount of time in one block. I didn't like spending too much time with my kids in one go when they were little. They were arseholes😂

Iheartherain · 07/05/2023 15:28

It’s done through the government account. I generally transfer the same amount, sometimes some is left over but then some months there isn’t so it works out even. Does that make sense?

I really thought charging for BHs was standard - be interesting if not as my bill for May will be much less!

Endlessdark · 07/05/2023 15:43

in my household it’s a day off for everyone except mum (me). Absolutely relentless!

Whataninsight · 07/05/2023 15:44

Flipping heck… what’s holidays must be like for you op?!

CreeperBoom · 06/05/2023 09:11

I've never worked anywhere that automatically takes the bank holidays. Its quite common in Scotland to just get them added to your annual leave to take whenever you like.

I don't think i have ever chosen to take a bank holiday Monday off, unless I was taking the full week. I'd much rather save the days and take an extra week in the summer.

Random days seem a bit pointless.

That's not a Scottish thing, more an organisational thing.

TwoManyKids · 07/05/2023 16:23

I find it hard as it dials up my insecurities. Everyone else out spending time with family and friends and doing DIY.
I am crafting with DT so that's nice while ignoring my house need some TLC

Maybe, but I think is more common in scotland. E.g. when I worked for a UK wide company, Scottish worked got bank holidays as floating days, and English workers had to take the bank holidays. This was because they couldn't make scotland take the English holidays but didn't want everyone is scotland off, when the English offices were all working on the Scottish days.

I don't know anyone who actually has to take bank holidays. Even my DC's school was in on Easter Monday last year. I get the impression that is much less common in England? Irrelevant to the OP though.
