To think I should be able to win Mario Kart at least once

Given that I’m a grown up and quite a good driver in real life. But DS is always 1st, and I’m always 9th or 11th or something. It’s so hard to steer, and that annoying sideways wheel thing, ugh!

any tips? What car and wheels should I choose? Techniques? Which of the stupid things you collect should I throw at who when? Does pressing the buttons make any difference at all? (I did once do something all round and the result was the same)

so YABU - what do you expect? It’s nothing like real life and frankly with your hand eye coordination you have no chance, plus your DS plays way more than you - winning is a pipe dream

or YANBU- you can do this, with a subtle change of approach and a few sly tactics you will one day be the winner

Oh I love this thread. I live in a house full of males, all of whom kick my ass at MarioKart. I am devouring these tips, and will borrow one of their switches tomorrow.

I was amazing at Wario Gold Mine on the Wii, but they don't have that one on the Switch. Gutted!

Wario's Gold Mine is on the switch, it's on the Triforce Cup. I think it might be an expansion pack but I can't remember for certain if it's free now or still paid.

Anyone who has the Nintendo online plus can access the dlc from that subscription instead of purchasing all the extra courses though.

ElfDragon · 05/05/2023 23:17

Gold mine is on the switch now - it’s part of the extra courses released in the paid upgrade.

For the bats (on the Wii and the switch) I tend to cross the bridge but, then hang left as the bats go past you - keeps you out of the way of them.

Beseen22 · 05/05/2023 23:19

I was so smug at Christmas as I kept winning. Turns out the CPU was playing at DS's level so was pretty rubbish. A few months on and he's now amazing, usually 1st at 200cc and I'm now terrible as the CPU characters have got so much harder.

Stick to 100 cc and keep items behind you rather than firing them straight away. You can boost over some shortcuts so keep them handy. I always enjoy a shortcut. I find carts much easier than bikes to control. If you go underwater it clears ink. If you keep the red blaster thing you can do it just before a blue shell and apparently it stops it blasting you (I wouldn't know...I'm never first!). Good luck.

TimeForTeaAndG · 05/05/2023 23:23

Alongside all of those amazing tips, remember: there is no loyalty in MarioKart. Smack talk and bash other players out your way.

McSquirter · 05/05/2023 23:26

If your questioning all of this you can't be very good and hours of play behind. I'd give up. A person who won't let you win is frustrating but reliable.

It’s part of the base game. It’s not part of the paid downloadable content (on Switch).

Oh my god you can totally do this . (Whispers:) and you must!! Best of luck op!!

I was amazing at sonic the hedgehog 2 on my sega megadrive back in 1993/94 probably could've been the world's number 1! lol.
Now I'm absolutely rubbish at gaming really cannot get to grips with modern games. Think I'm just too old and retro.
Dcs have got Mario kart and I'm rubbish always come last I just can't play games anymore.

Me too! Ds just rolls his eyes when I say this. But I was a champion, I really was!
Now I can't even win at Wii sports. 😭

Ihavehadenoughalready · 06/05/2023 04:32

Not sure which version you have but I can always beat my son at Wii Coconut Mall and most of the time Peach Gardens. I think muscle memory kicks in.

I did practice quite a lot/did time trials.

I don't do well with courses I can fall off of. Wario's Gold Mine and Rainbow Road are equally horrible and I fall off repeatedly.

When you're in first place, shoot shells behind you.

Using the wheel works best for me. My kids prefer Wiimote plus nunchuck but I'm not that coordinated.

I prefer bikes because I can do wheelies that give speed boosts.

Ihavehadenoughalready · 06/05/2023 04:55

I would like to add that I refused to buy son a switch because our Wii (and our WiiU) is still perfectly fine and yes I understand the Wii is older than you and it's embarrassing to still have a Wii and nearly impossible to find new Wiimotes but if you want a Switch get a job.

He was 14 when I told him that and not willing to get a job.

Which, darn, now I don't get to play with a Switch either. I bought the Wii for them one Christmas but it was really because I wanted it. 😉

Also, I love Super Mario Galaxy 2 and I'm awesome at Loopdeloop Galaxy.

McGoadyFromFuckingGoadyville · 06/05/2023 05:06

My husband doesn't use auto steer and drifts really well. He usually comes first. I have auto steer on and come 2nd and sometimes I beat him.

So it's possible to win without drifting, and I'm happy to not come last. Grin Hold your shells/items behind you so you don't get hit, get as many coins as you can and try not to get stuck in the midst of everyone. Once you're in the pack it's hard to catch up.

HarlanPepper · 06/05/2023 05:28

I think it's just loads of practice. Getting to know all the courses inside out. I was amazing at MarioKart 64 and regularly used to smash the competition on 150CC because literally all I did at the time was smoke weed and play Nintendo with my then boyfriend (now husband). I was always Toad. Now my kids play MarioKart on the switch and I hardly ever join them so I am terrible at it. But sometimes I do dream of recapturing my glory days.

LovelyJublee · 05/05/2023 22:52

@cocoloco117

That's nowt compared to when I get asked about Animal Crossing. Grin

If you share your Just Dance crown with me, I'll give you a lift in my Mario Kart car and share my gold cup with you.

Animal crossing is more work than my actual work!

You’ve got yourself a deal though, now Ali we need is someone who knows how to play that internal super smash game (fed up of falling off the side!)

PennineWay · 06/05/2023 06:40

Haha, I love the idea that if you'd good at driving you should be good at Mario Kart 😅 They're very different things!

Lots of tips on here already but really, just practice. Master the drifting and the little boost you can get by pulling up the controller as you go over a ramp. Master the timing of the boost at the start of the race. Hold a shell behind you so that you have a buffer against getting hit.

But also worth breating in mind, it's one of those games where it's just very unlikely that you're going to win every time. Once you get to a skill level where you're fairly evenly matched, there's also a lot of luck involved around which power ups you get, whether you get hit etc.

No one wins every time (apart from the ridiculously good people online but I'm sure they must be cheating!) - That's part of what makes it such a good and addictive game.

Atalosswhat2do · 06/05/2023 09:12

I'm a 40 yr old mum in a house with husband & 3 boys who underestimated my ability to whip their ass every single time. 😂😂

I use one of the little wheels that you put your controller into, sit up straight feet on the floor as if i'm driving.

Game option Grand Prix

150cc

Character - baby Peach
Car - Pipe Frame
Tyres - off road
Glider - the aeroplane one.

Enjoy the glory of winning 🏆

Winning dance is essential.

What console are you playing on? Ive found when playing on the switch on the tv my son has track and steering assist on which helps massively

That's called cheating

Colinfromaccounts · 06/05/2023 12:35
  1. take the shortest route. Take corners really tightly
  2. don’t do auto assist, it keeps you on track but slows you down
  3. drift drift drift drift
  4. use items defensively, hold them behind you and they’ll deflect most attacks against you
  5. make sure you have as many coins as possible as they increase your speed
supermamio · 06/05/2023 12:48

Male101 · 06/05/2023 12:30

That's called cheating

I didnt say to do it, was more for something to check as my son can win with these things on

benkenobi · 06/05/2023 13:14

I'm banned from Mario Kart by my 8yo DS because I always beat him! 😂😂😂 I learnt my skills from the streets - by which I mean being thrashed by my younger brothers in the 90s in our lounge! They still beat me now but they respect me as a contender now. I've paid my dues. 😂

benkenobi · 06/05/2023 13:15

And I agree with a pp, press accelerate when the countdown is on 2 and you get a speedy start. My brother has only just told me that one. The swine! 🙄

BBNoM · 06/05/2023 14:16

@cocoloco117 I agree re Mr Scooty.

Best kart combo is Mr Scooty with Roller wheels and Dry Bowser

BBNoM · 06/05/2023 14:17

My DS won't play with me anymore because I nearly always beat him

aSofaNearYou · 06/05/2023 14:29

I use the Circuit Special, generally with Azure wheels, but don't really pay that much attention to the wheels and pay zero attention to the glider.

The kart is great, though.
