Which was their damage limitation number so when they lost 800 they could say 'we've not done as badly as we feared'.

AIBU to be cracking open the champagne while they try to figure out how the hell they can put a positive spin on this?

Fantastic news. It is a pity the GE is not happening sooner.

We have a green majority here

Busybody2022 · 05/05/2023 22:03

Our previously strong strong blue council has just 12 tories remaining (76 seats). Its shocking yet bloody brilliant.

LlynTegid · 05/05/2023 22:08

I am not cracking open any champagne yet (or any other celebratory drink). Still not certain that they will get well beaten in a 2024 General Election. The public purse is still paying a salary to several Tories in Parliament (or ex-Tories) who should be facing criminal charges that would mean the public purse instead would be paying for them to be in prison for a long period.

Dymaxion · 05/05/2023 22:11

@EmmatheStageRat Me either, we weren't blessed with an election this time, Labour usually get about 3 votes in this area and in local elections I vote for the best person for the job of looking after the local area, like a lot of people I vote differently in local elections to general elections and I am not ashamed of that.

If you ask any local councillor what their biggest issue is, regardless of the colour of their rossette, and they will tell you it is the huge cuts to their budgets from central government or at least that is what the local Conservative councillor has been telling me for the last 13 years !

MotherofPearl · 05/05/2023 22:12

I'm as delighted as anyone else with today's results, but to be frank, I find it astounding that after everything that has happened, there are thousands - millions - of people who are still prepared to vote Tory. It feels like it doesn't stand to reason that there should be one person left to vote for them after what they've put us all through.

Of course people care. They voted to leave the EU so that we could keep control of our borders and yet the French are still letting people come here in boats.

The Tories could have policed the borders anytime they wanted - it didn’t needed need Brexit to do that but they chose not to do anything about it.
As no one has seen any evidence of things being better because of Brexit, Brexit is now a vote looser for the Tories.

You do know this whole trans shit show has unfolded under the Tories and that self ID was a Tory policy don't you?

MotherofPearl · 05/05/2023 22:20

@Parker231 - @jgw1 is a remainer and is winding you up!

While I dont think you have the privilege stated, if you vote for the Tory party based on their views, is idiotic.

The only reason why the Tory party know what a woman is, is so they know who to chain to the kitchen sink

I agree.
I assume they must be confident they'll never need an ambulance or, God forbid, get raped in Tory Britain and they clearly don't give a shit about anyone who does or is.

Braveheart35 · 05/05/2023 21:37

I find it quite depressing that so many (I assume) women are quaffing their champagne & heralding the new era of the erasure of womanhood. Not a Tory voter, but won't give either Labour nor Lib dem my votes and what this would mean for my daughters.

You can't expect people to vote for the Tories based on their vague statements about protecting women's rights sometime in the future. Especially since they caused the trans shitshow.

They were the party that put Self ID out there in 2017. Since then they have put rapists into women's prisons and on to women's wards. They have written genderwoo into legistlation. 6 years of predominantly TWAW Ministers for Education have fucked up our schools. 6 years! Even now our Sectretary of State for Education, Gillian Keegan can't/won't define "Girl" because she believes TWAW.HmmAngry

So weasel words promising women some form of protection at a future date yet to be announced, doesn't cut it. They are the government. Why are they not doing it now?

Swansandcustard · 05/05/2023 22:26

Shame on those councils who voted them in (I’m looking at you, Bedford).

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2023 22:28

Bedford is still counting??

Swansandcustard · 05/05/2023 22:29

Voting based on GC views alone just highlights the narrow-minded idiocy of it. Honestly, we deserve what we get. Tory GC stance mirrors their views on same-sex marriage and relationships. All based on ‘Christian values’. Wrong hill to die on, GCs, wrong hill.

Swansandcustard · 05/05/2023 22:31

@Piggywaspushed hope so, DD17 said there’s posters welcoming the ‘new conservative mayor’

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2023 22:32

Hmm. I know him... that family is everywhere! Trued to win 8 council seats!

Weird with Labour MP.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/05/2023 22:36

I bet you a £1 They'll still get back in again at the General Election though.

Swansandcustard · 05/05/2023 22:36

Sad we can’t pull in something better.

Piggywaspushed · 05/05/2023 22:37

I'm.hoping they just optimistically made posters.. count being announced now.

I wonder how many of the "independent" candidates are actually Tory.

In my town, there were no Tory candidates. But there were four candidates who all had identical leaflets identifying themselves as "independent".

One was a current Tory councillor. One was a former Tory councillor. One has previously stood as a Tory. Only the 4th was unknown.

Was pleased to see their tactic didn't work and they didn't get elected at least.

I work for a district council and that has certainly been the case here. A number of previously Tory councillors changed to independent as they knew they wouldn't get in again if they campaigned as a Tory.

I am strangely invested in this now.

Does the Bedford mayor have any powers?

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/05/2023 22:38

Just hope it translates in a GE.
