A GP friend of mine recently put on her stories a review of a gut health drink which worked for her. Said it made her feel fantastic. I went and bought the drink, and at checkout it said 'who recommended this to you, enter their name and you get 50% off, so do they'. I entered her name and got the 50% off. Life got in the way and a day later the drink arrives, and I'm like oops I need to tell her I entered her name and thank you for the recommendation. I go to message her, she's unfollowed me.

WTF?

I wonder if a GP is allowed to advertise these sorts of things on social media? Because just like you, people are likely to buy it because it’s almost like it’s doctor recommended. I wonder if she has since deleted the post and unfollowed you so she can deny a connection to you if she got found out? Maybe you writing her name made her think twice about her post.

Was going to say similar. You've been unfollowed because she doesn't want to be accused of recommending this product for money and risking misconduct.

Surprised she posted it in the first place though. If it sounds dodgy and all that.

neilyoungismyhero · 05/05/2023 14:51

Personally I would ask her if you've upset her and apologise if she says you have. I can't see the harm in giving a name out to be honest but maybe she does.

BoogieBoogieWoogie · 05/05/2023 14:52

How would she know you've ordered it and entered her name??

crazyaboutcats · 05/05/2023 14:55

You did absoultly nothing wrong.

The only thing I can think of is that she got a load of flak or even a telling off from her employer for promoting a product as a doctor on SM

You're overthinking things. She didnt unfollow you because of this, it's all coincidental. She will not even be aware that you gave her name

crazyaboutcats · 05/05/2023 15:13

P.S. If you are having gut trouble I highly recommend an elimination diet to check for food intolerances if you haven't already (far cheaper an empire reliable then the various tests available).

And then introduction of good gut health foods like high fibre and probiotics. This is likely what this supplement is.

For myself I have a smoothie every morning with probiotic yoghurt, banana, another fruit usalt frozen, kale or spinach (can also be frozen) and 2 tbsp ground flax seed. Then for my other meals I try to make half my plate vegtables and two more portions of probiotic foods a day such as aged cheese, sourdough bread, miso, kimchi, kombucha, sourkrout or other fermented foods. And as little as possible processed foods and additives such as artificial sweeteners, which is easier if you're not snacking so good filling meals are important.

IMO supplements can be a good way to kick start a change and support you as you transition your diet, particularly if doing elimination. But they are expensive compared to food as you still need to buy food. They also tend to have a lower absorption rate due to flooding your system with lots all in one go (same for juices). To improve this you should take them with food. If you are taking a probiotic check to see if it contains a prebiotic and if not take with fruit.

I am not a doctor but I successfully manage Crohn's Disease with diet, and from my research found that is approach is the cross over of almost all recommendations for any gut, autoimmune or inflammation type condition.

You're looking at it wrong. She's got your 50% discount so will move onto her next victim.

MLM innit.

No, it isn't MLM.

The OP has said it's Symprove. It's the OP who gets a 50% discount for 3 months (so saving £75). The GP will get £20 off her next order but it's actually quite restrictive when the £20 can be applied so she may never even use it. So unlikely that the GP is doing it for the money.

CountZacular · 05/05/2023 15:25

You’ve done nothing wrong and I would have done the same (and wouldn’t have assumed I need to message for permission). It’s literally how these types of referrals work. Usually if you are the one posting it’s precisely because you want someone to try the product to get your discount (I should know - I’ve done it before from her end!)

RavenclawDiadem · 05/05/2023 15:44

Forever Living? Herbalife?

Woman literally advertises a product, recommends to her friends etc.
Friend buys product on that recommendation.
Friend is asked who recommended it, answers honestly.
Womans email address is given to company that she already gave it to.

She has no reason to be miffed here. She's a spanner.

This 👆 as well as life being too short for this sort of palava (as has been mentioned previously.)

Inthesamesinkingboat · 05/05/2023 15:51

I have people who I’ve know years ago who crop up on my social media from time to time and I have a “oh shit moment” and realise these blasts from the past are still seeing what I’m up to so I delete them. She probably didn’t realise you were still looking at her stuff and has had a bit of a social media cull.

Jenasaurus · 05/05/2023 15:53

Are you sure her original post recommending the drink was from her, I have a friend whose account was hacked and suddenly started advertising bitcoins, they werent behind the posts at all so wonder if this is the reason you have been unfollowed

Agree.

OP, is it Instagram? Maybe she never followed you? You just followed her?

Can you still see her posts? Or has she blocked you?

Clementinesucks · 05/05/2023 13:22

You gave out her name without her permission. Awful.

To a company that already had it? Hmm

lemmein · 05/05/2023 12:03

Yeah I agree with this - she did recommend it to you, albeit indirectly.

You didn't do anything wrong.

😂

Chickenwing2 · 06/05/2023 08:02

I wanna know what the gut health drink is!!

Toottooot · 06/05/2023 08:11

Everyone here frothing about giving a name I guess you’ve never bought something online and then received an email from the company saying tell your friends to mention your name and you both receive x discount. This GP friend appears to have done just that - no reason to get upset about it.

Deanie02 · 06/05/2023 11:39

Probably symprove if it is hope it works for you my little boy has used it for 6 or 7 years. If you never gave her email I would ask her it might just be coincidence.

Totally agree, she advertised it on her stories. Surely that was in the hope that someone would put her name in so she could get 50% off her future orders?

^^Exactly this!!
Why share on stories if you dont want people to see it or try it, now you RECOMMENDED it??

Her loss not yours, plus you got said item for half price, yay.
If she has been spammed then it's her own fault. Dont spam everyones feeds with a reel about it if you dont want people to buy it too!!

Just seen you only gave her name, so if shes been spammed then that because shes already in their database, and its more likely thank you for signing up "such n such" so her fault, she should have stated in her story to not give her name in.

It doesn’t sound like the unfollowing is connected (she wouldn’t even know).
