To want to snip people's coat tacks?

You know the loose stitch that holds the back vent of a coat or blazer together when you buy it? They're there to hold the item's shape in the shop but supposed to be removed before you wear it.

So many times I've seen someone walking along with the back of their trench or blazer still with the tacks in - and I want to just sneak up and snip it open! 😆
I wonder if their pockets are still sewn up too 🧐😆

Love this thread as this drives me mad! It's not just younger colleagues but I once had an older female colleague who could barely walk in her skirt because the tack was left in the back split. As she was walking past my desk I stopped her and mentioned that the tack was still in the skirt. I got some scissors and snipped it off but she said she thought it was part of the design. I was a bit nonplussed that she thought that at her age but at least she could walk better.

See things like this are what makes me think it's a relivatively new / modern thing

What a thing to get worked up by

I don't think anyone is worked up about it, just wanting to snip them. People have shared humorous stories.
There's no need to be sneery.

I’m with you!

I tell young professionals on the tube all the time. I have a little nail clipper in my handbag. I always worry they might be offended. But I’m very discrete and polite and say something like “What a lovely new coat you have! It looks like the sales person forgot to take the tailor’s tack out for you. Would you like me to give it a quick snip for you?” I’ve never had a bad reaction. Usually a bashful smile and a head nod. Maybe my grey hair helps too. If it’s going well, and I feel extremely bold, I might mention they have pockets which can be opened too.

Will you be my friend?

Of course, @Allthegoodnamesarechosen !

Oops. Looks like someone forgot to snip this boy's tacks before the coronation...

I noticed one at a funeral last week. Dark grey suit, large light tacks. Stood out like a sore thumb. It didn’t feel appropriate to comment though.

That's weird & creepy.

YANBU.

Also those silly labels sewn on the sleeve cuff of some coats loudly announcing “Cashmere” Yeah, right 5% or so.

Nah, he's realised the outfitters forgot so he's asking around for a Swiss army knife....

Perhaps Penny Mordant sorted it out with one of her swords!

Somehow I've only noticed tailors tacks in the last 10 years or so. I never know if I should say to someone or not.

To the posters to carry knives, scissors, nail clipper- were you all be prepared girl guides - and do you carry safety pins??

A few years ago walking into a wedding, a random guy runs up taps me on the shoulder, Do you know you have a tag on your dress? Nope I didn't know I had a mammoth tag on my bum. DH ended up biting it off with his teeth. 🫢🫣😳
So as wedding season approaches please check you don't have a mammoth tag that says non-returnable if removed.

I once came to the rescue of a member of a marching band in the Lord Mayors Parade, I happened to have a bunch of safety pins ( can’t remember why) so we fixed her outfit while they were paused for a bit. It was one of my finest hours which I like to think cemented the UK/US special relationship for all time.

Ooh, nice! I actually am a little in awe 😉

I am in a students' association(I guess it's a little bit like a sororoty/fraternity. Although we are coed, and that's fairly unusual)

Anyhow, junior members need to carry certain items. When I was in uni I never went to an event without a mini pocket knife (it's tiny), safety pins, a needle & 2 threads, string and obviously tampons (for any sister in need).

It is a really useful habit to get into.

*sorority (and all other spelling mistakes I probably missed)

it's too early for me 😵

I just noticed this part. Calm down, Fagin.

Can't stop laughing at this- brilliant
