To want to snip people's coat tacks?

You know the loose stitch that holds the back vent of a coat or blazer together when you buy it? They're there to hold the item's shape in the shop but supposed to be removed before you wear it.

So many times I've seen someone walking along with the back of their trench or blazer still with the tacks in - and I want to just sneak up and snip it open! 😆
I wonder if their pockets are still sewn up too 🧐😆

I snip the vent one but leave the pockets as it helps the coat retain the shape.

I hate it when people don't cut iut the coat hanger loops and then spend their lives tucking them in when wearing, just cut them out.

But they are useful for keeping your clothes on the hanger!

I tuck them under my bra strap!

Mossandlichen678 · 04/05/2023 20:15

I always have a strong urge to cut off those tiny straggly pony tails that middle aged men sometimes have …and to even up asymmetric hair cuts on both sexes… I don’t carry scissors in public.

Brefugee · 04/05/2023 20:15

I have lovely wooden hangers, some have bits of ridged rubber at the shoulder part - none of my clothes fall off. Other hangers (plastic ones) might be slippy.

Would you want to know if it flopped out? I know i would. It's one of those "bathroom mirror" conversations in a pub or club, surely?

ghyt · 04/05/2023 20:29

Haha this was me for a year until my mum mentioned it, I had no idea Blush

DappledThings · 04/05/2023 20:38

YANBU. Sat behind someone at a funeral the other day in a lovely smart black coat with a great big white stitch in it.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 04/05/2023 20:38

Huh, well I've just learnt something. Notw to go and check my suit!

I tell young professionals on the tube all the time. I have a little nail clipper in my handbag. I always worry they might be offended. But I’m very discrete and polite and say something like “What a lovely new coat you have! It looks like the sales person forgot to take the tailor’s tack out for you. Would you like me to give it a quick snip for you?” I’ve never had a bad reaction. Usually a bashful smile and a head nod. Maybe my grey hair helps too. If it’s going well, and I feel extremely bold, I might mention they have pockets which can be opened too.

That is infinitely weirder than people not bothering to clip it or not knowing that they're supposed to do so. WTF?

It's really not. Some people are not petrified to interact with other humans

tedgran · 04/05/2023 20:42

I once told a young man to undo the tack when he got home, he thanked me. Most of the tacks are in different colour thread,I wonder why people leave them?!

slowquickstep · 04/05/2023 20:44

I don't know what is worse, coats and jackets without the tailors stitch removed or the ribbon hangers on women's tops still in place, it just looks so cheap

HoldingTheDoor · 04/05/2023 20:45

It's really not. Some people are not petrified to interact with other humans

Most of us manage that perfectly well. I don't need to go around snipping various bits off complete strangers' clothing in order to interact.

angelikacpickles · 04/05/2023 18:50

The tag on the sleeve of a suit jacket is another one!

That breaks my heart.

HoldingTheDoor · 04/05/2023 20:47

Just because you can't handle talking to people with grace,

I'm not seeing much evidence of grace in the above rant.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/05/2023 20:47

I can't get over people making comments about this to complete strangers 🫣

Whatever the intentions are, I think this is mad - it's not your place to offer random unsolicited advice to people you don't know!

It reminds me of the older women who used to come up to me when my DC were small & offer unasked for advice. Maybe it was useful - I didn't care! I hadn't asked them!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 04/05/2023 20:49

WomanBitingATowel · 04/05/2023 19:33

And the rest of the time, you use your nail clippers to snip holes in people’s bags and pickpocket them, obviously. You’re the Piccadilly Line Snipper.

No, she cuts their fingernails, of course! "There, now they're nice and neat 😊"

Margrethe · 04/05/2023 20:49

That’s kind of you @M0nica44 Flowers

I mean well…what if they are off to a new job, etc?

Sissynova · 04/05/2023 20:51

@Brefugee *bloody Norah a lot of you are very up yourselves.

Just because you can't handle talking to people with grace*

This is all very ironic for someone who has decided everyone needs to live by their rules and cut out hanger ribbons and goes around telling strangers how much it “ruins” their outfit. Maybe you don’t get out much because this isn’t normal behaviour.

DreamiesAnonymous · 04/05/2023 20:52

Wow, the public scissor wielders among you are hilariously bonkers! But I mean this in a nice Mumsnetty way, I promise.

I like using the hanger loops (the ribbon kind, not the plasticky ones) in my Christmas baubles, way nicer than the thin gold stringy stuff they come with.

HoldingTheDoor · 04/05/2023 20:53

Margrethe I do owe you a genuine thank you though because of you, I finally put nail clippers in my bag. Something I've been meaning to do for a long time because my nails break at the slightest touch so a sincere thank you for that

SleazyLizzard · 04/05/2023 20:59

Hey can we have pictures of what you are talking about, before and after with diagrams

electriclight · 04/05/2023 21:03

I'm surprised so many pp are cross at the thought of someone telling them that they've left the stitch in. I genuinely wouldn't care if a stranger told me. I think I'd be glad. I've been told similar things over the years and always been pleased. It's sad to think that genuine good intentions might be met with hostility.

electriclight · 04/05/2023 19:37

I can't upload photos but when you buy a blazer or long coat they often have a split at the back - this is stitched closed but you are supposed to remove the stitch.

Gosh well I have learnt something new today too!

BraveMaeve · 04/05/2023 21:05

I didn't know about this and have realised I have a coat with one of these stitches Blush will take it out now, I just hadn't realised!

TulipTuesday · 04/05/2023 21:05

I get annoyed seeing the vent stitch too, but last year I was at the funeral of my DS’s old school friend.
He was only 21 and there were a lot of younger lads he worked with standing in front of us at the crematorium.
I sobbed my heart out at the sight of these young lads with the stitch still in their new suits. There was just something so heartbreaking about seeing those young kids in their new suits saying goodbye to their friend. 😔

LMBoston · 04/05/2023 21:05

@Margrethe @srin Tack the Snipper, roaming foggy London streets armed with nail clippers :)

And lol at calm down, Fagin @HoldingTheDoor 😂

Can2022getanyworse · 04/05/2023 21:09

I've done this twice in the last 6 months, both younger colleagues, one in a far superior role to mine. Really expensive looking suit with a red tacking stitch. It SCREAMED at me from across the hallway, caught up with him quietly and just pulled it out. He did thank me, it was his first proper tailored suit.
