To want to snip people's coat tacks?

You know the loose stitch that holds the back vent of a coat or blazer together when you buy it? They're there to hold the item's shape in the shop but supposed to be removed before you wear it.

So many times I've seen someone walking along with the back of their trench or blazer still with the tacks in - and I want to just sneak up and snip it open! 😆
I wonder if their pockets are still sewn up too 🧐😆

People have to learn stuff. Sneering doesnt help. 21 year old ds asked me how to create an invoice today for some work he had done. He was baffled...but only because he'd never had to do one before.

I think the pp who has approached people is performing a marvellous public service but why carry scissors at all times? I expect they are grateful, like when someone tells you you've got lettuce in your teeth or have sat on bird poo. It's embarrassing but not as embarrassing as continuing your life unaware.

MissPoldark · 04/05/2023 19:35

It’s how I realised DS had come home from school with someone else’s blazer - it still had the tacks on the back.

Anyone got a picture of what on Earth this tacking stitch is

I like the hanger loops though I use them to hang my clothes

I can't upload photos but when you buy a blazer or long coat they often have a split at the back - this is stitched closed but you are supposed to remove the stitch.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/05/2023 19:37

That is quite extreme! I’m not surprised you haven’t had a bad reaction. They probably think you are bonkers and don’t want to aggravate you when you are armed with nail clippers.

😂😂😂😂😂 absolutely!

I’m with you!

I tell young professionals on the tube all the time. I have a little nail clipper in my handbag. I always worry they might be offended. But I’m very discrete and polite and say something like “What a lovely new coat you have! It looks like the sales person forgot to take the tailor’s tack out for you. Would you like me to give it a quick snip for you?” I’ve never had a bad reaction. Usually a bashful smile and a head nod. Maybe my grey hair helps too. If it’s going well, and I feel extremely bold, I might mention they have pockets which can be opened too.

Most people wont react badly in that situation because they're too polite or uncomfortable or put on the spot

I would be furious afterwards.

Who do you think you are for gods sake?

HoldingTheDoor · 04/05/2023 19:39

I expect they are grateful, like when someone tells you you've got lettuce in your teeth or have sat on bird poo. It's embarrassing but not as embarrassing as continuing your life unaware.

Much less embarrassing than approaching complete strangers while wielding a pair of nail clippers and suggesting you snip a small stitch on their jacket that clearly wasn't troubling them. It's hardly equivalent to the bird poo situation or your knickers showing.

HoldingTheDoor · 04/05/2023 19:40

I do sometimes wonder if it's the first decent garment they've ever bought.

Perhaps it is and what of it?

ArcticBells · 04/05/2023 19:42

YANBU. Stickers on bottom of shoes too.

I just noticed this part. Calm down, Fagin.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/05/2023 19:43

My sisters in law were yelling at me about this when I bought a new coat 😂

M0nica44 · 04/05/2023 19:44

@Margrethe
I know you have had some negative comments, but personally I think it's lovely you do this. People aren't born knowing this stuff and if noone takes two minutes to tell them they never will.
I once was stopped by a very kind woman who discreetly told me i had my cardi on inside out! I felt like a proper numpty, but was so grateful someone had been kind enough to point it out. At least my looking daft stopped there!

HoldingTheDoor · 04/05/2023 19:45

I'm now picturing Margrethe as a nail clipper wielding Ron Moody.

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 04/05/2023 19:46

I'm with you. See also the paper tags on the back of Levi jeans that display your waist and inseam sizes to the world. THEY'RE MEANT TO COME OFF!

i sometimes forget to snip the tack, then suddenly realise a few wears later. Labels on scarves annoy me but mainly because I realise when I am just rushing out and they have to be carefully unpicked which takes ages and needs nail scissors.

User5438790 · 04/05/2023 19:54

A very kind woman also told me once that my cardigan was inside out.

Aye, course you do.

'Calm down Fagin' that's brilliant 🤣

Brefugee · 04/05/2023 19:56

with you on the vent tacks.
I leave my jacket pockets sewn up - unless it's quite heavy fabric, because the minute you put something in there, it ruins the line.
But vents? Cut the freakin' stitches. It looks bloody daft

Brefugee · 04/05/2023 20:00

I've told people on the street before, or on the train. And they've always been glad i've told them.
It depends how you approach it.

I usually say something like the pp with the nail clippers (I have a swiss army knife with scissors, it's a 20 second job)

and i will often tell people that their hangar ribbons (which i always cut out, they infuriate me) are hanging out. It just ruins a lovely outfit sometimes. And again, I've never had someone tell me to shut my beak.

HoldingTheDoor · 04/05/2023 20:03

I'm quite sure that there's no correlation between these two sentences.

I wouldn’t say it but I would definitely think it, and I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only one. You sound like a rude busy body telling pointing that out to someone.
Oh god forbid a tiny bit of ribbon which is useful when hanging up clothes happens to be visible. What a faux pas how will they ever show their face in public again.

bloody Norah a lot of you are very up yourselves.

it looks bloody stupid, a coat with a vent is made like that so it moves properly when you walk. If you want to look like idiots, be my guest.

It is a tiny 1.5" blade - it doesn't bother anyone. I don't do it every day, but i have, for eg, pointed it out to an immaculately dressed young man, in a charcoal coat, with a big red tack in the back. Just because you can't handle talking to people with grace, don't tar everyone with the same brush. (And it's not as if they say "no" i get out a Crocodile Dundee knife or something and ask them if they want to reconsider)
Are you the ones who never open your doors or answer your phones in case you have to - gasp - speak to a stranger?
