AIBU to ask if they're worth it?
I'm not usually into labels, but I always think they look really smart, and have coveted one for ages - but whenever I get close to purchasing, essentially it's £100ish for a nylon tote bag.

YABU - overpriced
YANBU - they're great, get one

I have been looking at getting one too. The reviews I have read seem to love them.

EmmaEmerald · 04/05/2023 01:11

I had a proper look at these in a shop as I often need folding bags for work and hate arriving at client meetings looking like a bag lady

it is just that, an overpriced nylon bag with no sections.

Appleblum · 04/05/2023 01:19

They're not very fancy and not my daily bag but quite useful to have around, and nicer looking than other nylon bags. I throw a big one in my luggage in case we buy too much on holiday. If it's raining and I don't want to risk damaging a leather bag I'll switch to it. Quick trip to the beach or pool and I'll throw everything in it, etc.

HipHipWhoRay · 04/05/2023 01:22

They’re also robust. Have had mine years but they’ve really gone up in price. I don’t think £100 worthy but last and are a they’re very useful

user1477249785 · 04/05/2023 02:33

I have had mine 23 years. Still going strong. Cost per use must be pennies.

MokaEfti · 04/05/2023 02:41

I accidentally threw one in the bin

OctopusComplex · 04/05/2023 03:02

My first one (15 years old?) all looks great. The couple bought in the last 5 years have had holes in the corners relatively quickly.

I am not convinced that I've been any heavier on them, but they are larger, so maybe I just put too much stuff in them?

I got one in an pale pretty colour, to go with a wedding outfit, but it got "colouring in" on it!

Ignoring the leather handles, I put it in the washing machine, and it worked brilliantly.

So, always looks new, very strong, very light, so if you have any shoulder/ back/ neck issues, it's great.

Maybe try a second hand one from ebay etc first? Sometimes the big online stores have sales.

Plus, you can easily buy a handbag insert for compartments - genius, and really useful.

OctopusComplex · 04/05/2023 03:06

PS What size is 100 pounds?! I can buy the small size in a sale here in Oz for less than 50 pounds equivalent?? Medium for 75 pounds.

tuttifritti · 04/05/2023 03:47

I bought one maybe 7 years ago and was shocked at how quickly it wore at the corners Maybe the quality has deteriorated as PP suggested. Bags are my extravagance but I won't buy another Longchamps Pliage.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 04/05/2023 03:52

DH bought me a white Bird of Paradise about 14 years ago. The corners are a bit scruffy. Any marks usually come off with some soap and a soft toothbrush.

ThinWomansBrain · 04/05/2023 05:43

thanks everyone - interesting feedback that they don't seem to last as well/long as they used to.
OctopusComplex - £100 is the large size, but the medium is typically £95

You can get them really cheap second hand on eBay or depop. Definitely don’t pay £100 for one!! They’re very well made but the interior is lacking imo.

Heroicallyfound · 04/05/2023 07:06

I have a large one. I’ve relegated it to a swimming/beach bag as it’s useless for work or day to day. It’s big enough for everything I need, but too big and floppy to find things. It’s too floppy for taking a laptop. The leather flap over the zip makes it a pain to reach into to grab your purse/phone etc when it’s on your shoulder. Maybe I should try an insert but I prefer my slightly more structured/smart Radley tote for work and something smaller for weekends.

So I’d say it depends what you want it for. I wouldn’t buy one again.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/05/2023 07:10

I really like them for size and looks, but the corners are crap.

ZenNudist · 04/05/2023 07:31

Mine has gone at the corners. I sewed it up but it's not the same. I usually just use it as a spare bag for travel. Certainly not an every day bag. If mine had got heavy use it'd have fallen apart.

Ossification · 04/05/2023 07:59

If you want a French, nylon, no-sectioned, folding bag, Carrfour do a belter for about €1

BansheeofInisherin · 04/05/2023 08:01

I don't really get them. Just a large and expensive nylon sack? I like a lot of compartments.

Carmelalefou · 04/05/2023 08:01

I've got a tote bag size. Dh bought it for me but I'm not a fan. It's too basic.

BlueKaftan · 04/05/2023 08:02

They look like the handbag liners from back in the 80s.

Christmascracker0 · 04/05/2023 08:04

They are a great workhorse bag. I have 4 just now - a large, medium, backpack and a travel bag. I can’t recommend them enough!

I would say be careful on eBay as there are lots of fakes!

Myjobisanightmare · 04/05/2023 08:05

Definitely it’s been my dd school bag since she was 15 so used and abused every day for 3.5 years and still great

FlounderingFruitcake · 04/05/2023 08:05

They’re really versatile. I use mine as a nappy bag, to take on the plane, as a beach bag. It never takes up more room than it needs to, looks smart enough.

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 04/05/2023 08:12

Ebay

Xrays · 04/05/2023 08:14

I think you’re just paying for the brand. They’re not very useful for day to day as everything just gets lost inside them. I much prefer my similar sized bag from Mia Tui- tons of pockets inside and really useful for a fraction of the cost.

BansheeofInisherin · 04/05/2023 08:20

I have a Mia Tui as well- super useful for travel if not very posh-and a pure leather no name bag for less than £100, which I got overseas and has lasted over 4 years.
