AIBU to ask if they're worth it?
I'm not usually into labels, but I always think they look really smart, and have coveted one for ages - but whenever I get close to purchasing, essentially it's £100ish for a nylon tote bag.

YABU - overpriced
YANBU - they're great, get one

I like mine. It's the bag I use for my umbrella/Kindle/lunch and any papers I need to take to and from the office. I have a separate small bag with phone, money and keys in it.. Like a PP I like the fact that it's light before it has anything in it. I've had it a few years and it still looks good.

I also bought a copy in a local 'cheap bag shop' for about £8 which lasted 5 years before getting really scruffy, although obviously the trim wasn't leather.

youveturnedupwelldone · 05/05/2023 05:51

I really love mine, I use it all the time for work, hand luggage, beach bag, overnight bag.

I bought it when I was feeling flush and I do think it's a bit ££ but I've had a lot of use out of it in the time I've had it.

You can get them cheaper on eBay - whether genuine or not I don't know!

Cincinnatus · 05/05/2023 06:10

I’ve had a few and they are very nice and long lasting. Only downside is that it’s a nightmare to find anything in them. I was always rummaging around to find stuff which was annoying. There is a small pocket inside which my keys fit in (just about). I think you can get handbag inserts which would help the problem.

User5438790 · 05/05/2023 06:25

They are more like using a shopping bag than a handbag as there is no structure and only one small pocket inside so ideal for larger things but not small handbag stuff.

overitunderit · 05/05/2023 06:35

They are worth it. They are smarter than a normal tote bag and have more shape. They last really well. It's not going to change your life or set your world on fire but if you need a simple classic tote bag and have £100 to spare they are a good purchase.

GodSaveTheClean · 05/05/2023 06:49

I don’t think that is expensive for a good bag. They look very smart, especially in tan and navy. Go for it OP!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/05/2023 06:51

Mine is tan and looks lovely on the outside except the corners. The white inside is utter shit though. So cheap looking and gets so dirty. I wouldn’t buy it again.

I’ve also got one of the baby cross body ones. Very expensive at £140 but I love it.

IpanemaChica · 05/05/2023 06:53

I bought one each for my teen dd’s while in Cannes on holiday. They’ve lasted really well and have been used for sleepovers, shopping, travelling.

I’m happy with my 2€ Monoprix jute bag Grin but may treat myself to something fancier this summer in France as I have a big birthday coming up.

harriethoyle · 05/05/2023 07:08

My DSD have them. They look like a Nana shopper 🤣🙈

AuntieMarys · 05/05/2023 07:09

I found a brand new navy one for £4 in a charity shop. The most useful bag I've owned

Moraxella · 05/05/2023 07:10

@Wiglio interesting, I got three in as many years as the zips kept breaking and the corners are all battered!

Dustybarn · 05/05/2023 07:16

I’m on my second tote and I also have the large expandable travel bag. Super useful and unpretentious. The corners do go eventually but I get so much use from the bags that I won’t complain when the current version needs replacing.

Oh here we go with the ageism. It’s just a fucking bag.

Tinytigertail · 05/05/2023 07:48

Mine is 8yrs old and still looking good and going strong. I find it really useful and will replace when mine finally gives up the ghost.

Wiglio · 05/05/2023 07:50

@Moraxella they said in the longchamps shop that they will repair the corners without charge so they are aware of the weak spots just a pain if you don’t live near one

Toocooltoboogie · 05/05/2023 07:53

I was bought one for Christmas. I didn't know of the brand before. Honestly I thought it looked like a cheap nylon bag. Sorry if that sounds ungrateful. I was flabbergasted when I googled the name and realised how much it cost.

Bunnycat101 · 05/05/2023 07:53

Love them for work (as do half my office seemingly). I use it as my laptop bag and then have a smaller handbag. I do have a mulberry Bayswater I bought for work and hate it. I find the handles too short and it’s too heavy to drag around all day. I’ve also been using a different one as a changing bag as waterproof nature = useful for carting around the kid’s rubbish.

MuddlingThrough1724 · 05/05/2023 15:03

I have a leather version (now 8 ish years old) that still looks great despite daily use and having shit flung in it that doesn't really fit. Mine is a personalised version, but they do a personalised option on the nylon ones too.....may treat myself to a nylon version one day!

Sandwichgen · 04/01/2025 18:09

I'm wondering if I have ended up with a fake, having taken the plunge. I bought one with the shoulder loops, so i didn't have to put it down or hang onto it with one hand while searching for things (as one would with the smaller, hand-sized loops).

But its hopeless - the little leather flap really needs to be sewn differently so it falls backwards when the bag is opened. As it is , it is so stiff and curved it (a) makes the bag difficult to unzip because it is in the way and (b) makes it difficult to find anything when the bag is open, because it sits in the way.

Is everyone else's like this ?

I might try 'scoring' it with a sharp knife. so it flips backwards, even if this will shorten the life of the bag ... because it isn't going to get much use otherwise.

Hoppinggreen · 04/01/2025 18:18

I've got 3, really like them and they are excellent for travelling.
The lighter colours do mark a bit though

AliTheMinx · 04/01/2025 18:59

I've got a small and large one and love them. They look smart and are great for work/holidays.

JMSA · 04/01/2025 19:01

They're good, but my top tip - if you're using it for work - is to carry your pens in a pencil case in the bag.
At the secondary school where I work, the girls' bags all have holes in the corners!

Bought from where?

The leather does soften but yes, you have to fully open the bag to get it out of the way.

I used to have similar from Herve Chapelier which I preferred.

Thank you! I used to have a fabulous one ages ago, and for a few years now have been racking my brains trying to remember the brand! I always preferred the straps to the leather ones of the pliage. Off to look now - you don’t know how chuffed I am!
