I just feel it's in bad taste and they shouldn't be publishing they're success. They are getting stick for it.

They are running a business that depends on publicity. Why would they turn down a puff piece?

2nd homes aren’t great, but since people own them and let them, there is no reason not to run a management business is there? The rentals would still be there if they didn’t. We could legislate against them if we wanted.

JingsMahBucket · 03/05/2023 00:56

YABU.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 03/05/2023 00:59

Yes. Heaven forbid somebody actually works to provide a service that other people use and does well at it. 🙄

This isn’t even tall poppy syndrome. Just ugly, old envy.

SleepingStandingUp · 03/05/2023 01:05

What's the issue? It's an article promoting their business. Are people not allowed to admit they work for a living? Would it be better for the hospitality trade to die a permanent death so no one is ever allowed a break?

Peakypolly · 03/05/2023 01:09

Am I misunderstanding? They run a small holiday cottage company?
From what I read, they live locally and employ local people. Also, the national park has a local occupancy clause on house sales so many properties cannot enter the holiday rental market.

Erex · 03/05/2023 01:10

They shouldn't be getting stick for it. How do we choose which successful people are "allowed" to be successful, and which aren'?

HalloweenGhost · 03/05/2023 01:15

What if they ran a hotel? Would that also be wrong?
If there was no holiday accommodation, I couldn't imagine the cost of actually finding a holiday.

I think they're just starting to employ people so have presumably been doing all the cleaning and maintenance themselves.

@Strawberrydelight78 can you come and explain why you object to people working hard and building themselves a successful business from the ground up? Or are you trying to promote them but in a non obvious way?

RunningUpThatMill · 03/05/2023 01:48

Have you linked the wrong article?

All I have read is that a young couple have started a business, and by the sounds of it have worked really hard, and are hoping to employ people in the future

I'm really sorry if I've missed something, but this certainly isn't bad taste to me.

TrashyPanda · 03/05/2023 02:10

I can’t see what there is to object to

Endlesssummer2022 · 03/05/2023 02:10

Currently on MN, if you have more than just the coat on your back, you’re meant to ‘read the room’ and not mention it because some others don’t even have a coat. Crabs in a barrel mentality.

Circumferences · 03/05/2023 02:17

I get it rather. I'm against second homes too because quite frankly houses are supposed to be a home for people to live in, not a cash cow that invites other wealthy people to come pretend they live somewhere pretty for a weekend then stays empty most of the time.

I live in an area riddled with empty homes. It has wrecked the community, and because there are so many, there are virtually no shops or cafes left now because there's no one around apart from on hot bank holidays when all the wealthy tourists arrive with their huge cars blocking all the roads.

HipHipCimorene · 03/05/2023 02:23

These people manage other peoples holiday let’s.
They do them up, add extras like jacuzzis to increase their clients chances of letting them out. This leads to cheaper holiday rentals so people who don’t have the money to go abroad or don’t feel they can with disabled, young children etc or just want to explore the area can afford to do so.
They are clearly being successful and bringing more money into the local economy.
This is a business, they are advertising that.
Ill definitely be looking at these guys for my next hols.

ProbablyNotMad · 03/05/2023 09:31

Well done to them and I hope their business continues to grow and be successful. With how difficult so many people are finding things at the moment it is lovely to hear that not everyone is miserable and desperate.

Ylvamoon · 03/05/2023 09:36

It's catch 22 isn't it.

Holiday rentals = inflated prices / nowhere to live for locals

No Tourist = less / no jobs for locals (tourists with £££ who wouldn't stay in a caravan or do camping)

Tidsleytiddy · 03/05/2023 09:38

TrashyPanda · 03/05/2023 02:10

Well it’s the have and have-nots isn’t it. People can’t afford to rent a room in London and some wankers are snapping up 11 houses. They’re not the only ones are they. The whole system is corrupt. The lack of properties is pushing the prices up. The government, despite their “promises” aren’t building any social homes. “Affordable” housing in our area starts at about £400k for a flat. Ludicrous piss take. I get the pair in the article are running a business but it’s indicative of what’s going on right now. Loads of money sloshing about but not where it’s needed. Fuck me, tossers have so much money they’re blasting themselves into space

Hbh17 · 03/05/2023 09:41

People working hard to develop their own business? Seem like an admirable couple, and OP's objections are both naive and juvenile.

Trixibella · 03/05/2023 09:41

Locals who live locally and have worked hard. Trashing them out of bitterness doesn’t improve the homelessness situation. Stop wasting time on the internet and go and help your local homeless. Not everyone is in the same boat.

GoneTillNovember · 03/05/2023 09:42

Of all the social injustice in the world... this couple running a business is what you object to? That is so weird I don't even know where to begin.

For those who think no one should own more than one property, where would be get holiday homes from? Millions of people go on holiday in self catering holiday homes every year, employing people and supporting local economies. What would happen without these? I am not being goady just genuinely don't know how this would work without holiday home owners/businesses.

MidnightMeltdown · 03/05/2023 09:44

You are being ridiculous

SmallSpaniels · 03/05/2023 09:50

Of all the things to get your knickers in a twist over, people working hard at building up a business and employing local people has got to be way down the list. If that “disgusts” you, please don’t watch the news. People do far more disgusting things than run a business.

LakeTiticaca · 03/05/2023 10:25

The same could be said of all businesses. For example big firms like sainsburys etc, who started off 100+ years ago ( when there were homeless and starving people aplenty with no welfare state)
And look how big they have grown.
Thankfully there was no Internet back then for people to make pointless whiney statements berating those who work hard for a living.
Pretty sure they pay a nice chunk of tax on their earnings as well!!

what exactly are you disgusted by?

Maybe if you told us, we might agree or disagree

However, a link to a click bait article is just lazy

SunnySaturdayMorning · 03/05/2023 10:29

YABVU. Why shouldn’t they celebrate their success just because others can’t or don’t have the same?

It’s not their problem or fault anyone else is struggling.

But they haven’t “snapped up 11 houses” though. They’re managing the properties on behalf of the owners - who are all different people.
