I just feel it's in bad taste and they shouldn't be publishing they're success. They are getting stick for it.

Excellent stealth marketing.Hmm

hattie43 · 03/05/2023 12:09

Why do people in this country tear down success rather than celebrate it .

Fabellini · 03/05/2023 10:38

But they haven’t “snapped up 11 houses” though. They’re managing the properties on behalf of the owners - who are all different people.

No, ok THEY haven’t personally but they’re promoting other people’s wealth ie having not only a home to live n but one to rent out too. It’s just indicative of what’s happening at the moment

Strawberrydelight78 · 03/05/2023 12:52

Exactly this and in popular tourist towns tenants were also evicted when lockdown was eased and we could travel. So that greedy landlords could make more money renting out as holiday accommodation. It's not something I would want to publish when people can't keep a roof over they're head's.

100 per cent agree. Publicising wealth when some folk haven’t got a roof over their heads. Disgusting really and it’s not just this article it’s everywhere you look.

Wingedharpy · 03/05/2023 13:06

I do feel that the world is turning backwards these days.
It's becoming unacceptable, to some, for us to dare set foot outside our own hamlet - unless we can ride a bike.

TallulahBetty · 03/05/2023 13:20

Depends. It's not clear if they are 'second homes' which are preventing locals from buying them.

Or are they genuine 'holiday lets' which can't be lived-in all year round? In which case, crack on

ProbablyNotMad · 03/05/2023 13:32

Bitter much?

DrMarciaFieldstone · 03/05/2023 13:45

Absolutely nothing wrong with this, good luck to them, the properties look great.

YAB massively jealous U.

Glasshalffullorempty · 03/05/2023 13:48

People have a successful business and celebrate it shocker. YABU

potniatheron · 03/05/2023 13:50

What am I meant to be outraged about tho

illiterato · 03/05/2023 13:53

I live in an area with a lot of second homes and a lot of holiday lets. To be fair to the lets, a lot of the owners really thrash them ( low season discounts etc) and they are occupied for at least 2/3 of the year and weekends outside of that. Those people probably actually spend more money with small local businesses than I do- I’m not really going around buying artisanal cheeses and honey every weekend. The second homes which are rarely occupied are more of an issue as they reduce housing stock without the associated revenue.

Blossomtoes · 03/05/2023 13:53

Successful small business initiative achieved through ingenuity and hard work. How disgraceful. 🙄

Nutellaonall · 03/05/2023 13:55

I don’t understand why only locals should get to enjoy the lakes. I love and work in dreary suburbia. Should I never get to stay in any beauty spots so all the locals can live in them?

Peakypolly · 03/05/2023 01:09

Am I misunderstanding? They run a small holiday cottage company?
From what I read, they live locally and employ local people. Also, the national park has a local occupancy clause on house sales so many properties cannot enter the holiday rental market.

You misunderstood (and I suspect so did OP).

They manage Lake District properties owned by other people. The owners pay them to do this.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 03/05/2023 14:24

People who own second/holiday homes pay council tax. They aren't freeloading.
In our case we also employ local tradespersons, patronize local shops and otherwise contribute to the economy.

The notion that an individual or family should only own the home they actually are residing in, is absurd. Seasonal properties are a not-uncommon way of life in most parts of the world.

I agree there should be more government underwriting of affordable housing but certainly not any curbs on how many properties an individual may own.

Oojamaflipp · 03/05/2023 14:33

But this couple don‘t own those houses? They are basically a management company for other owners from what I understand, and they have combined that with doing up holiday lets that were otherwise old and outdated. I genuinely don‘t understand what the problem is OP?

They shouldn't be publishing their success?. so we should only publish people's failures and read about people's failures. What a dystopian world!.

Has it occurred to you that articles like this are exactly what we need in the current climate to encourage people and give hope to young aspiring people that it can be done.

But if success stories shouldn’t be publicised how do you inspire children/teens to study, get a good job, create companies?

Tidsleytiddy · 03/05/2023 15:07

They should be publicised but the housing crisis is a big issue at the moment. Those of us with accommodation are lucky but others aren’t and to read about folk having more than one property is insensitive.

Tiddlypomtiddlypom · 03/05/2023 15:10

Why on earth is this ‘disgusting’?

Where does the OP’s logic end? Don’t publish that story so it a cancer survivor, it’s disgusting as lots of people die. Don’t publish that story about a baby being born, some people are infertile. Don’t publish that story that shop opening up, some shops are closing down.

gg45 · 03/05/2023 15:10

Economic success for the country relies on the success of entrepreneurs and also an element of positivity about the country and what is going well. Yes there is a cost of living crisis and yes it is dreadful but we really are sunk if the only narrative must be negative - we will then be stuck in a doom loop and money and talent will just walk away

Cosmosforbreakfast · 03/05/2023 15:15

It's no different to someone advertising their B&B.
