I think it is an inbuilt biological thing. I do exactly the same thing according to my DW (although i refute that!!!)

DS1 in my case builds a volcano...

my response (being a geologist) "what kind of volcano is it? well if it is X type of volcano it needs to look like this.....but if you wish to build Y kind then the slopes need to be approximately inclined at 25 degrees due to the fluidity of the lava"
