Official Coronation Quiche - UPF

Just had a look on royal.co.uk - I'm a bit peeved that the recipe for quiche uses '1 or 2 block of ready-made shortcrust pastry'.
Not only is this dearer thank making it yourself, I'm pretty sure its a UPF. Certainly not clean eating - there was me hoping to make a wholemeal version, as I much prefer wholemeal flour and its obv healthier too.
I slightly despair - on this momentous occasion, can't we just be encouraged to do it properly. Its not that hard!!!

I bet sales of coronation chicken go through the roof

BarbaraofSeville · 03/05/2023 06:43

@NoFault2023 true, but it's fine to eat UPF occasionally (I listened to their podcast on this and they said to aim for less than 20% UPF).

Or you can make your own pastry, with lard and/or butter, which are both less processed than vegetable fats.

If they hadn't mentioned ready made pastry, there would have been complaints about the recipe being inaccessible to people unable or unwilling to make pastry.

They can't win, because there's too much whataboutery these days.

JustDanceAddict · 03/05/2023 07:04

I’m sure you can make your own pastry!!

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 03/05/2023 07:23

This swearing a pledge of allegiance stuff seems to expect us to behave like medieval peasants. Did they eat quiche? I thought it was invented later.

MarinatemysoulinSprite · 03/05/2023 07:32

@mainsfed

I googled Coronation Quiche.

First link that came up was BBC Good Food so pretty reliable.

I copied and pasted from there.

I didn't check every single result, but it's not exactly rocket science to substitute the lard if you are vegetarian.

Vegetus · 03/05/2023 07:33

Can any of the anti UPF clan give me a reason why it's bad? I've seen plenty of the Instagram reels of 'nutritionists' either going round supermarkets telling you what you shouldn't eat and snappy podcast clips doing the same. But they never give a reason why.

Vegetus · 03/05/2023 07:35

Are blueberries bad because they contain chemicals which i don't understand?

Quiche is a French tart so I reckon peasants shouldn't even l ook.at it.

I think the OP should have just done the BBC Good Food thing, where you write in the comments that you loved the recipe, then list all the orginal ingredients you substituted or didn't use, and ingredients items you added.

We'd have ended up with a Coronation Meringue then. (Also French, so all peasants please back off, thank you very much.)

Life is too short to make your own pastry

It takes no time at all to make pastry, it's dead easy.

For those querying UPF

Google Tim Spector ultra processed foods

His research suggest that it's how the emulsifiers in particular react with your gut and make you more likely to overeat and more likely to suffer depression

It looks like he's done some meta analysis of lots of studies as well as just his own ( which makes it more reliable )

I know who he is. Anyone who says calories don't count and is trying to sell something is a quack in my eyes.

SophisticatedWoman · 03/05/2023 07:58

Who the fuck puts fucking broad beans in a quiche? Or are they the beans for baking blind? That's all they're fit for in my opinion.

midgemadgemodge · 03/05/2023 08:01

I doubt he says calories don't count

I suspect he might say that sone calories absorb more easily than others which is clearly true - I would guess 100 calories of raw carrot takes a lot more energy to absorb than 100 calories of cream

But google with a -Spector -Zoe to rule out his studies

Broad beans go really well with eggy cheesy things and are one of the first uk crops - although this year I don't think many people have managed to grow any yet

No he literally says calories don't matter. Like all these best selling nutritionists he's taken a kernel of truth and made a business out of it.

SophisticatedWoman · 03/05/2023 08:06

Well, I can't stand them, the mealy bastards

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/05/2023 08:13

Apparently if you are lucky enough to be able to eat them immediately after picking they aren't mealy, like peas. Most of us won't be able to do that so next best alternative is to eat the frozen ones. That's what I plan to do. I will make the effort to take the skins off as I think they'll be much nicer that way. I like beans in all their forms, but rarely get round to eating broad beans, so I thank His Majesty for the nudge to make this effort.

Sophie1980 · 03/05/2023 08:14

The Definitive Quiche is described by Keith Floyd in his book on France.
Whatever Flour you like, eggs and cream and a few pieces of bacon.

midgemadgemodge · 03/05/2023 08:17

Well I'd like to see the context of your statement - I've only found it in the context of calories counting gives you short term weight loss but is long term ineffective because most people just put the weight back on?

Which is true and is why he recommends changing how you eat normally

So not sure what your problem is ? Over 90% of people who diet put the weight back on, most people I know who are fat are on endless diets/weight gain cycles

thehorsehasnowbolted · 03/05/2023 08:32

Can I have a steak on the side, please? Medium-rare will do.

KimberleyClark · 03/05/2023 08:37

I’m rubbish at making pastry. It’s a knack not everyone has. So ready made pastry every time for me.

I'm interested in the research on this too. Chris Van Tulleken has got a book out which is being v. well reviewed, I'll probably spend one of my Audible credits on it https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg25834361-600-how-ultra-processed-food-harms-your-health-and-how-to-fix-the-problem/

How ultra-processed food harms your health and how to fix the problem

Ultra-processed foods contain artificial ingredients that impact our health in ways that we are only just beginning to understand, says Chris van Tulleken

Because you don’t absorb the nutrients in the same way. Your body doesn’t absorb “extracted or processed nutrients”. So a diet of UPF with equal measures of fat, protein, fibre and calories to a non UPF diet will equal vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition. When not in a calories controlled setting thus causes you to overeat. I can’t explain how but the book/podcast does - these foods are highly palatable and so encourage you to eat more - this actually changes the pathways in your brain. They are addictive in a similar way to nicotine is.

I’ve just linked above - I’m listening to this now. I listened to his podcasts too. Absolutely brilliant, I’m no scientist but I get the gist of his breakdown of the relevant science behind it all.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 03/05/2023 09:08

It’s a fucking quiche. Make it however you want - it’s the joy of the quiche. Fairly adaptable.

or don’t make it

No one is forcing you.
