To ask if this clock is haunted?

Ok, sorry this has ended up a bit long, but I need someone who knows about clocks to explain this.

My parents’ house is weird. Lots of strange goings on over the years that can’t be explained. Over the last few nights, their kitchen clock has been going haywire. The other day mum was looking for an old key to a side door that hasn’t been opened in years. She had a bag of keys out and had gone through them all. Couldn’t find it, but decided to see if any of the keys fitted into any of the other doors in the house (old house, all have locks). She went on a hunt and then had a quick lie down on the bed and fell asleep for a minute. She came back into the kitchen to find the keys in a pile on the floor. Ok, so she probably just left them a bit more precariously balanced on the table (she doesn’t think she did) but then she looked at the clock as she had a train to catch, and realised she must have slept way longer than a few minutes because the clock (which she’d checked before going upstairs) was suddenly 2 hours ahead. She panicked and checked her phone etc, the clock was wrong. She rushed to get her train, and as she left shouted to the house to please fix the sodding clock. She came home that night with my dad and the clock was right again. That night they changed the batteries.

Last night she was hunting for her hat (things have gone missing in the house for years). She’d checked the clock as she had food in the oven and was working out what time my dad would be home. A few minutes later, checked it again and it’s 4 hours ahead (sent me a pic). She goes upstairs, calls me as a bit freaked. Later on she texts me and when she checked it again at about 10, it was set to midnight. She’s the only one in the house. What’s going on with the bloody clock? Just a cheap battery powered thing (that she replaced the batteries for after the first incident). Please someone with a rational brain explain that we don’t have a ghost playing silly beggars.

Oh and at the same time she saw the midnight clock, the hat turned up on the floor (where she had definitely checked) in exactly the same spot as she’d previously found something that had been missing for months just suddenly reappear. Right in the middle of the living room floor. What’s going on?!

He's having an affair. Leave him.

Oh, sorry. I fell asleep there for a few minutes/hours.

@CurlewKate 😂

Alexa seems to think I have asked her something obscene! 🙄That's what I am finding so funny.

This is the sort of start to a book I delete off my kindle about 10 minutes after I've downloaded it.

I was just thinking this sounds like a book I would totally read.

But seriously OP, sorry to be a downer, but a few things you said would make me wonder if your mother might be growing confused?

Starting a task (was there a reason for opening the side door?), wandering into another task (trying lots of keys in doors), losing any sense of completing that task and lying down for a nap, losing time, gaining time... The clock may be faulty and I would definitely get that sorted, but some of the other stuff sounds off.

How old is the clock? Aren't old Grandfather Clocks the type likely to be haunted but I can't imagine they have one in the kitchen.
My kettle is haunted so who knows 😂👻

Oh I had a haunted Grandfather clock once! Swapped it for a different one in the end.

Its a shame they are so out of fashion

Arielsmelody · 02/05/2023 21:02

Is it a digital display on the clock? My guess is that the LEDs are flickering or fading on and off so the number displayed looks wrong sometimes. I'd recommend just buying a nice new clock!

Tangelablue · 02/05/2023 22:24

Could be the house that's haunted, not the clock. My gran liked clocks so i can imagine her messing about with clocks from beyond the grave.

Your mum was due to catch a train, so she went and had a lie down, and fell asleep???

That's the inexplicable bit for me. If I am due to catch a train, I can't sleep the night before, let alone on the day itself. What is her secret???

I’m glad I’m not the only one bothered by that. If I’ve got a train to catch I’m not having a nap!

I have a nice new modern house as of last week. However I still came down to the CD machine playing Robert Palmer!
Bloody ghosts came with me.

My wall clock also does that. It’s radio controlled so low battery or poor connection to the signal would explain that. I also have a digital radio that changes channel on its own, don’t know why, is it possessed?

When I was a little girl my mama worked as a home help. One of her ladies died and she left her a silver calendar - the type where you flipped it over for the day and the month.

Somehow my mum ended up with it.

She realises one day she hadn't flipped it over - say it was 1st September. The calendar was on 20th April.

She changed it to 1st September. Next morning it said 20th April.

Next day she changed it to 2nd September, went to work, got home and it said 20th April. This went on for a bit and she just thought me or my sister was changing it for a laugh.

So she set it to a totally random date, put it in the highest cupboard on the kitchen. Went back to check it a week later. Yep set to 20th April.

She gave it to a charity shop very quickly.

I love that your "ghosts" are fans of Robert Palmer @BuntyFayreweather !

BuntyFayreweather · 08/05/2023 08:45

@DejaVoodoo i have put Puccini in there now and no issues.

WhoWants2Know · 08/05/2023 11:20

I've given up having clocks in my house for this reason. When I first moved in, I ordered lovely clocks so I could have one in each room and not be late. But none of them would keep the time, and it got confusing. Watches don't fare well either.

I'll remember that for any future possible hauntings in my house... a quick blast of Puccini will be cheaper than an exorcist!

You need to get a paranormal team in.

Mum is not confused - she's haunted!
