OK so I strongly suspect I have squirrel nutkin and all her relatives living in my eves /soffits/loft.
There is a big pile of shreded loft insulation in one corner of my attic (but can't see any obvious damage or poo) and I have found bits floating around my garden. I have also spotted a squirrel climbing up the side of my house and disappearing under my eves...
How the fuck do I get rid of the little bastards? Does anyone have experience of this and the likely hood of how much this will cost ?
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Check your local Council website @scratchyfannyofcocklane as they may offer a pest control service.
I believe it varies from area to area but ours does it and they include squirrels in their list of "vermin".
They are often much cheaper than other pest control services.
Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the replies.
They are definitely grey squirrels! I suppose I have no alternative other than to get pest control in and a roofer and keep my fingers crossed its not going to cost ££££ - I have checked home insurance and it's not covered. Shit!

When you do catch them, I believe @TwoMonthsOff has a squirrel sanctuary so send them her way.

Will gladly pack their suitcase and buy the tickets...
They may look cute but I have no intention of providing a home for Mrs nutkin and her offspring to enjoy at my expense....

Squirrels cause a surprisingly high amount of house fires each year because they are so destructive and chew through electrics. This is a serious problem.

They are rats with fluffier tails. Absolute pests

They are an invasive pest.

now red squirrels on the other hand…

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/05/2023 20:02

Try leaving a radio playing in your loft, ideally with the lights on too. It can sometimes deter squirrels as it makes them think it's not longer a safe place to be. The smell of strong ammonia placed near their nest can also work.

Worth trying before calling the pest controllers as it may mean you save the lives of some innocent creatures rather than having them killed.

Why? Because I don't want to risk 1000's pounds worth if damage to my house, risk them chewing through my electrics and possibly causing a fatal house fire?
FYI I'm a lone parent earning nhs B3 admin wage (ie not a lot) and can barely afford the essentials so I can assure you I wouldn't be paying for pest contarol just on the basis that their furry little faces offend me

Ooh she dropped the #NHShero bomb 😂

What will the squirrel sanctuary do now? 🐿️

Good luck op, they're an absolute menace.

Grey Squirrels are just rats in cute outfits. You need to have them removed by a professional before they cause untold damage to your house.

YouveGotToGrooveIt · 01/05/2023 20:37

Just to echo how destructive squirrels are... I had one in my roof. She/he literally dig a tennis ball sized hole through the ceiling into the bathroom below.

We used video surveillance to find the entrance. Waited till the squirrel was out then blocked the hole.

We bunged a battery powered sonic repellant just inside the loft hatch as our first thing to try and it seemed to actually work as we didn't hear anything else.

Seems to be working on my mice too.

Calibrachoa · 01/05/2023 22:08

The police where I am weren't interested when someone smashed a window next to dd's bed. I can't see them rushing over if someone released a squirrel from their loft back into the garden where it came from.

Scrumbleton · 02/05/2023 17:36

If you can block the entry hole while they are out- try some vigorous hammering beforehand to scare them away. This worked for us in the end. I had a mother and babies and didn't act fast enough. They gnawed through two sets of pipes bringing down two ceilings as a result of the leaks. Cost a fortune in pest control and repair bills as wasn't covered by insurance. The pest controller didn't catch any as the aforesaid hammering ( to lift floorboards for traps) and closure of their entry hole did the trick.
