I'm crazy aren't I?

So

Offer of a very cheap deal in a relatives villa between Florence and Pisa for end of august

It seems to be in a rural area
Not too fancy
No air con

I would prob need to hire a car
I have a 5 year old and a 13 month old

Too hot?
Too much hassle for one week?
I only have 1k (giving them money for the villa they said no but I will)
Food

Flights working at 150 each return
No booze and no big day trips

Forget it?
Or see how it would work?

Plus driving there
Hmmmm crazy right?

(My family have offered a small car free of charge while I'm there too)

We’ve stayed in that area in August without AC. It was ok but we had a pool and we used it a lot! Is there a pool? It was quite a long drive to the coast and the beaches were mostly ones you had to pay to enter - I can’t recall how much but if you’re planning to go to the coast daily for example that might add up.

MyLifeIsFullOfLemons · 28/04/2023 22:20

Pool? If not it’s going to be hard work to entertain kids rurally in the heat.

thisisasurvivor · 28/04/2023 22:20

Ahh I see

Sadly no pool

That is my fear

Pool and WiFi.

goodkidsmaadhouse · 28/04/2023 22:21

Honestly, I wouldn’t then.

thisisasurvivor · 28/04/2023 22:22

I feel ungrateful

Ask the provider of the car to grab you a paddling pool for the dc...

ViviPru · 28/04/2023 22:24

Nah not without a pool or amenities in walking distance. I’ve been on enough holidays with kids to know what works and what doesn’t for us, and what you’re describing sounds potentially like hard work.

goodkidsmaadhouse · 28/04/2023 22:24

Don’t. I have NO idea what this place is like (it was the first thing that came up when I googled Devon caravan holidays) but it looks like
you could get a week in a coastal caravan park in the UK for <£1000. Your kids (and therefore you) would probably have more fun https://www.beverley-holidays.co.uk/search-listing

We were up in the hills which was slightly cooler but a lot of bitey insects. The villa was stone built with shutters so cool enough. Car with air con. We didn't go for any walks. Beach was great, Pisa and Florence were great, lovely area, lots of gelato! Too hot for my family really but they are lightweights.

Acornsoup · 28/04/2023 22:33

The kids will be fine. Pick up a paddling pool and watering cans etc and plenty of ice lollies. Kids live in hot climates all over the world. You can get great inflatable baths for very small kids but obvs don't leave them unattended. It's a really nice gift you've been given.

In Italy kids tend to play out later at night when it's cooler. Italian ice cream is amazing.

There are loads of great towns to see in the area you have mentioned. Hire a car with air conditioning and you will be fine Daffodil

Inthesamesinkingboat · 28/04/2023 22:34

1k for a villa with no air con seems steep. Think your overpaying as to not appear cheap

TheChosenTwo · 28/04/2023 22:35

We stayed in Tuscany in august a few years ago with the dc. It was bloody hot, A/C, transport and a pool were absolute essentials for us.
What do you envisage doing day to day?

thisisasurvivor · 28/04/2023 22:48

Wonderful points

Do in total I would have 1k to spend for flights and spending money

Car will be covered and I will pay for the villa (they said not to but I will)

So many great ideas re paddling pools

Day to day relax
Go for walks
Some short trips if we can

But all in all I could be crazy

No wifi either
Hmmmmmmmm

it will be so so hot. Florence will be rammed and so so hot.

but we did it with a 2 year old. And loved it. But stayed in a villa with a pool and walking distance to small town.

so maybe not. I don’t know.

the heat could be limiting.

thisisasurvivor · 28/04/2023 22:56

We don't cope well with heat

Devonshiregal · 28/04/2023 23:18

feel like most places don’t have air con in Italy? At least I don’t remember there being anywhere I’ve stayed in the area you’re talking about…but it’s been a while so maybe they do. Do you have a dp? I think by yourself would be so hard and not fun with your smallest. Basically any trip with one parent and two little kids is just stress but 2 parents is doable. Make sure car has air con though or you’ll be stressing out about the kids overheating

thisisasurvivor · 29/04/2023 23:04

Thanks all

Will def book it in a few years for maybe autumn months

Such useful advice
We just couldn't make it work

YouWonJayne · 29/04/2023 23:23

I’ve been in San Gimignano in June (same area). I nearly passed out from the heat and and these rural areas aren’t too heavy on air con IME.

thisisasurvivor · 29/04/2023 23:24

I just don't think we would be ok

Maybe at night??

But not worth it

Sounds lovely

Reality may be hard going

YouWonJayne · 29/04/2023 23:25

Night times in Tuscany are fairly cool.

Its a beautiful part of the world, I loved every second but I didn’t go with kids - I’d have found it hard.

thisisasurvivor · 07/05/2023 22:05

Thanks all xxx
