While out shopping this morning with my husband, we picked up some toddler cutlery.
Have attached a photo of the same set.

The cashier wouldn’t sell them to us as we didn’t have ID! Seriously?

Aibu to think that common sense needs to take hold here. What possible mischief can anyone be up to with a knife that can’t even cut through butter.

To think this is bloody pathetic.

ID to show you are over 18?

YANBU. Ridiculous

I wasn't allowed to buy Grenadine syrup in Asda once because I had 11 year old DS with me. It has absolutely no alcohol in at all, but is sold next to the spirits for colouring cocktails, so they wouldn't let me have it. I couldn't figure it out at all.

Yes apparently it’s challenge 25 on these because if the knife.

I got challenged over a pepper pig DVD the cashier was looking for the dangerous item then rechecked the screen then had a WTF? moment it was rated U

clearly the pig is the problem not the products

UnctuousUnicorns · 28/04/2023 19:29

I believe you OP. DH was in his 40s when he had to produce ID in order to be able to buy a plastic spaghetti server. Utter lunacy.

ChiChaNaYubi · 28/04/2023 19:30

Bizarre isn’t it!

Cakencookieobsessed · 28/04/2023 19:33

I got challenged over a Bridget Jones DVD when I was about 32. I was actually insulted rather than flattered, as I did not look under 15 when I was 32. Some people are just thick.

InSpainTheRain · 28/04/2023 19:35

There was a time when I would have laughed at the OP and said "you're having us on!" But I was challenged whilst buying Baby Bio (plant food) as apparently it has some chemical in it and they ID whoever buys it (Tescos). I happened to have my driving license so it was ok. I'm 58 wth?!

ChairOfInvisibleStudies · 28/04/2023 19:37

My brother got challenged buying plastic cutlery for a picnic, and he didn't have ID on him so he ended up with just plastic spoons to eat with Grin

ChickenRat · 28/04/2023 19:40

I was once asked for ID when buying knitting needles so I fully believe this happened

OKScarpetta · 28/04/2023 19:42

I bought a fold up chair from Argos a few years ago which had an age restriction on it… the computer sometimes just says “no!”

Needmorelego · 28/04/2023 19:45

It is a silly legal thing. When the government bought in rules to stop the sale of knives to under 18s (sensible) but they didn't specify between massive kitchen knives or plastic/wooden picnic ones or children's ones like these Peppa ones - so all knives get the age restriction.
(I worked in a shop when the law was bought it)

GreekDogRescue · 28/04/2023 19:50

Nanny state

TomatoSandwiches · 28/04/2023 19:50

Peppa pig finding new ways to fuck up our days aye.

A couple of years ago my then 18-year-old dd was asked for ID to buy a video game in Asda. The game was rated 3+! She didn't have ID with her so they refused to sell it to her.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 28/04/2023 19:53

It's still a knife. She could lose her job if she sold it as she would be breaking the law.

But surely the cashier can just check the "no challenge" button on the screen? Whenever I buy alcohol and use the self-service tills this is what the member of staff on duty does. I'm clearly over 25. In the case of the OP it's not like she's buying a kitchen knife!

SatsumaSplit · 28/04/2023 19:56

I got ID'd in Blockbuster in student territory (Portswood Highstreet, Southampton for anyone who remembers it) for trying to take out a 12 rated DVD while wearing my university hoodie...

How dare you call someone thick for doing their job.

Needmorelego · 28/04/2023 20:01

@FuckNuggets well yes. In this case the assistant could have used common sense - unless the OP looked under 25 then unfortunately if the till requests ID - you gotta ask for ID.

DidyouNO · 28/04/2023 20:15

The same happened to me years ago. I was 31 and had my three kids in tow 😂

Eggsley · 28/04/2023 20:20

YANBU.

I was ID'd buying a tin opener when I was 27. I was quite flattered, but I had my driving licence with me so I was allowed to buy it. I can imagine I'd have been less happy if they hadn't let me buy it.

Perhaps you look particularly youthful or dodgy OP?! Grin
