While out shopping this morning with my husband, we picked up some toddler cutlery.
Have attached a photo of the same set.

The cashier wouldn’t sell them to us as we didn’t have ID! Seriously?

Aibu to think that common sense needs to take hold here. What possible mischief can anyone be up to with a knife that can’t even cut through butter.

To think this is bloody pathetic.

YANBU

I'm the wrong side of 50 and look it, I tried to buy a knife set in Asda, the assistant looked up at me and I jokingly said "I'm 12" She put the set behind the counter and refused point blank to sell them to me as I had stated I was 12 and refused to even look at the ID I had on me.

I bought a near identical set 5 minutes later in Sainsburys :-)

In Tesco, I wasn’t allowed to buy a PS3/4 magazine or whatever number console they were on then, because I had my 14 year old with me. The magazine wasn’t for him (it was for my 17 year old). It was on the conveyor with all my groceries. I was 47 at the time. I thought this was ridiculous, as they has let a tube of superglue (age restricted item) go through. I asked for a supervisor and they still wouldn’t let me purchase the magazine. They said it was because I could give it to my 14 year old, I said well that could also apply to the glue. Just completely illogical. So I left without any of my shopping. I went to Sainsburys and purchased everything, including magazine and glue without any problems.

mackthepony · 29/04/2023 03:21

Was the set for you to use, op??

Ridiculous 🤣

BlanketPile · 29/04/2023 07:02

The thing is, if the cashier is on auto pilot - it happens after 8 hours behind a till! - and asks and you have no ID, LEGALLY they cannot sell it to you if you dont have it. Often I just dont ask of you are visibly over 25, or joke with 90yr old Doris she is under 18, but if I am not sure- I am old so everyone look young to me Wink then I will ask.

Like things with solvent glue (nails, lashes). If your kids brings it to the till, then no, I am not gonna sell it to you when it's clearly for them. That's a proxy sale, just like alcohol. And no Brenda, if I see you and your husband walk in together, dont think we are stupid enough to think you are separate when you queue apart to get around the pain killer limit.

FrogsWormsandButterflies · 29/04/2023 07:34

All this post has done is reinforce how awful working with the public can be. Once we’ve asked for ID and it can’t be produced we legally can’t sell the product.
You may think you obviously look over 25, or have kids with you, that means nothing to us, if we are unsure we have to ask.
I would rather offend a customer than lose my job. I once had a man kick off because I ask his daughter for ID, they were using different self checkout tills, he wouldn’t leave so a manager had to come over and he was furious that she wouldn’t accept his word that his daughter was over 18 🙄

What an insightful and useful input to the thread.

Tbh I don’t think any reply would be useful, I mean, what are you wanting?

Pebblesnoses · 29/04/2023 07:41

Aw this reminds me of the time I got asked for ID when trying to buy a bottle of PAWsecco (pet prosecco) as a joke at Christmas. Obviously it doesn't have alcohol in it as it's for pets.. 😂

Doriana1 · 29/04/2023 07:46

33 year old me was refused false eyelashes in boots because they have glue in. Firstly I do not look under 25. Secondly, you can't get high off eyelash glue!

This has just reminded me that my gymbunny 37 year old male friend was given the ‘Thursday 10% over-60s discount’ at a local DIY shop last week. He just saw it on his receipt afterwards and is having a crisis about whether he looks a quarter of a century older than he is, give that he’s just embarked on dating.

I have been saying ‘cashier on automatic pilot’, but he’s trying to persuade everyone he knows to go in on Thursday and see if we’re all ‘seniors’…

Gabby10 · 29/04/2023 07:57

I got ID'd the other day buying something similar, I'd picked a few bits up so was confused what I was getting ID'd for- the cashier also seemed a bit confused when she said it was the cutlery set 😂. I've been ID'd for petrol once, my tank was already full and I didn't have my ID on me- I would have been happy to not pay and just drive off but of course they just said 'make sure you have it next time' and took the money 😂

Gabby10 · 29/04/2023 08:01

I will admit though now I'm 30 and feel like I've aged by 10 years since having my 14mo I do take it as a compliment and will have a laugh with them if I don't have my ID on me, yea it's annoying but it's their job to check. Although a lot of the time when I do have my ID they say 'oh I only asked because your small' (I'm 4ft 8) 😂

Bananarama77 · 29/04/2023 08:05

A few years ago I was asked for ID in a Tesco local by a woman clearly older than me (I’m over 40), I told her I don’t have it so she refused to serve me, I asked for a manager who came, looked at me then told the cashier don’t be ridiculous, use common sense & then approved me. Some people really are just idiots or being awkward for the sake of it

ChiChaNaYubi · 29/04/2023 09:02

I don’t have a problem with being ID’d for age restricted items. it’s just that this was bloody toddler cutlery! I feel this is where common sense should play out.

ProtestantsHateAbba · 29/04/2023 09:44

Do you look under 25? They’re meant to ID you if you appear to be under 25 for any knives even shitty little ones like this.

If you definitely couldn’t pass for under 25 a mistake has been made, no big deal really. Retail can be stressful especially right now when so many places are short staffed and the ones that are there are spread so thinly.

PrettyMaybug · 29/04/2023 09:45

Now THAT is seriously fucking funny! 😆

Thisismeyeah · 29/04/2023 09:49

OP YABU for complaining about being challenged for looking under 25. Unfortunately, I never get asked for ID. Just be grateful for your youthful looks, they wont last.

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 29/04/2023 09:49

I had the ID thing pop up on the self service till when buying teaspoons!

The cashier just laughed and authorised it, then warned me not to harm anyone with my spoons when I was leaving 😂

KnickerlessParsons · 29/04/2023 10:49

When DD was about 22 (looked younger) a few years ago she was refused paracetamol at a supermarket as she didn't have ID.

DH was waiting for her outside so he went in with her to buy it for her. He was refused too as they knew he was buying it for her.

He pointed out that she was the one with the headache and that the packaging clearly explained the dose for over 12s (she didn't look that young!). No dice, they left without the paracetamol.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 29/04/2023 11:05

The problem is that the government or legislators respond to public pressure.

So someone has been stabbed by a teenager, outcry ‘ how did they get the knife, ban knife sales to under 18, make everyone show ID…..’

Someone failed to read the notes on the paracetamol packet and took some as well as the cold cure which contains paracetamol. ‘ Terrible, ban paracetamol, oh well not ban it then but restrict it ….’

There was an attempt to ban home hair dye because someone had an allergic reaction ( and admitted that they had not done the skin test) luckily that one fell by the wayside.

so we all have to suffer to mitigate the few bad actors or careless…

If that was true assisted suicide would have been legal for some time.

Totally reasonable.

At our store, you need to be ID'd to buy paracetamol if you look under 25.

She was 22 and looked, according to you, younger.

It sounds very much like the person did their job correctly.
