While out shopping this morning with my husband, we picked up some toddler cutlery.
Have attached a photo of the same set.

The cashier wouldn’t sell them to us as we didn’t have ID! Seriously?

Aibu to think that common sense needs to take hold here. What possible mischief can anyone be up to with a knife that can’t even cut through butter.

To think this is bloody pathetic.

I was in Disney in florida and my 80 year old dad got asked for ID for a beer by a twenty year old.

It's still a knife. She could lose her job if she sold it as she would be breaking the law.

Proves the law is an ass quite neatly.

YANBU.

I was ID'd buying a tin opener when I was 27. I was quite flattered, but I had my driving licence with me so I was allowed to buy it. I can imagine I'd have been less happy if they hadn't let me buy it.

Perhaps you look particularly youthful or dodgy OP?! Grin

Judging by the way they usually slam the “visibly over 25” button at Sainsburys I’m going to go with no 🥲

What really annoys me is my husband is 37 and gets ID’s often. I’m 29 🥲

Christmas crackers for me, because they contain 'explosives' 🙄

I worked at poundland over 10 years ago and if someone bought children's cutlery a warning message asking is the customer over 18 came up. It does sound ridiculous and I guess it is but it is true.

You're not being unreasonable, OP! If they asked your age but you didn't have ID they should have used their initiative and sold it to you anyway.

Shopper727 · 28/04/2023 20:58

I had ordered some stuff from next, including cutlery, to be delivered and it denied the entire order because of said cutlery because I needed to produce id or I’d have to pick the order up in store. So I just took the cutlery off my order as it was an extra really but how ridiculous I mean most under 18s can raid the cutlery drawer and come up with something far more exciting than a serving spoon if they fancied doing something they shouldn’t!!!

Seems v ott to stop people buying simple items to eat with! And surely if you look over 18 or 25 in store you don’t need id? I am clearly over both these days I get it’s ‘the law’ and part of their job but really people need to look into some of this bonkers legislation and breathe some common sense into it

Peppa pig finding new ways to fuck up our days aye.

🤣🤣🤣

Abacusporttaco · 28/04/2023 21:16

I got IDd (and refused as I didn’t have to on me) for white wine……….vinegar.

Charlottewebsbabies · 28/04/2023 21:31

Oddly I often order vape juice online
I just pressed a button to say I was over 18 and when the order comes,it's just shoved through the door even though they are meant to knock and hand it over to an over 18 adult
The checks where shocking the first time I ordered-now they don't even ask

I once got id'd for Brandy mince pies in asda and brandy mincemeat in aldi
Me thinks brandy may be the issue

Morghulis · 28/04/2023 21:35

I got ID’d for a palette knife 😂

Hankunamatata · 28/04/2023 21:37

That's hilarious. Your more likely to get a paper cut opening it then get stabbed by that knife. Though fork could do some damage 😂

Deathmetal · 28/04/2023 21:38

Honestly I get where you’re coming from but working in retail can be very micromanaging and the staff member could have been subject to disciplinary action by pushing the sale through. You might think that sounds ridiculous but he might be going against the letter of his contract.

CarrotCake01 · 28/04/2023 21:40

When I used to work in a supermarket there was a blanket policy on knives that meant we couldn't sell to under 18s.
Certain items would just cause a till prompt when scanned and this wasn't just sharp knives. Even plastic sets of cutlery for picnics etc.
It's definitely weird, there's really not a lot of harm that Peppa Pig knife is going to do haha

CrappyJob · 28/04/2023 21:44

I get why it seems ridiculous. But the person doing their job is prompted by the till - they aren't deciding themselves to require the person buying to be over 25.

Also, there are people being paid to attempt to buy age restricted products - both people under age (paid by the police) and people under 25 (paid by the supermarket) - so we can't just decide based on the product that it isn't an issue - we have to check if we think the buyer looks under 25. If we get it wrong, there are consequences (from a warning to dismissal and a fine)

Yes it's annoying, especially when you are over 25. But they really are just doing their job.

weegiemum · 28/04/2023 22:34

Last weekend dh was away with work, and being the lovely dh that he is, bought me a care package on Just Eat from Asda. The dc who live at home we're away, so I got delivered a 6 pack of quavers, a box (the box is very important!) and a bottle type of Sauvignon Blanc.

I didn't know it was coming so when the doorbell wend at 9pm I restrained the dog and went to answer it wearing my "got the contacts out" glasses, joggers and my panda Oodie, and my greying hair up on my head. I'm 52.

The delivery driver just looked me up and down and said "don't worry about the ID!"

weegiemum · 28/04/2023 22:35

The box was maltesers, not wine!!

TooManyChoicesNotEnoughDecisions · 28/04/2023 22:43

If the till prompt comes up and the cashier is under 18 they have to get someone else to come and authorise it for them. As a seventeen year old I had to sit at a till repeatedly saying I realised the customer was over 18, but I still had to have someone else press the button. Everyone assumed I was actually attempting to id them, no matter how many times I said it was me, not them.

Emmamoo89 · 28/04/2023 22:44

That's ridiculous! 🤣🤣

Sold by an over-zealous jobsworth moron”

Or an employee who wants to keep their job 🙄

CurlewKate · 28/04/2023 22:50

It seems like insanity. But it's a blanket requirement so it's easy for people behind the till to say no without arguments about what constitutes a knife. Irritating, but sensible.

CurlewKate · 28/04/2023 22:54

I suspect you'd all feel differently if your teenage child had a Saturday job and was routinely hassled by obnoxious customers.

How dare you call someone thick for doing their job.

ooh i do dare. Haha. They were a right thicko. I was clearly over 30 and had 4 kids in tow.

CurlewKate · 28/04/2023 23:13

@ChiChaNaYubi Let's hope none of those 4 children ever work in a shop.....

ssd · 28/04/2023 19:59

How dare you call someone thick for doing their job.

Maybe you're the thick one who thinks a 32 year old mum of 4 looks 14? She never did her job that well either as after I laughed in disbelief, she served me without checking for ID.
