Best coffee out?

Where do you get the best coffee from? I haven't bought coffee for ages, instead using my cafetiere at home.

So, is it Starbucks, Costa, Pret, local independent, or where?

The best I ever had was in Sicily on holiday, nothing ever came close.

Costa and Pret coffee tastes pretty bad imo. Starbucks is the best in terms of taste but I'd opt for a good independent cafe over any or those.

YABU

🙄

Starbucks is horrible. Costa is drinkable. Caffè Nero is the best of the big chains. McDonalds is surprisingly decent.

Generally go for local independent places.

AngelicInnocent · 28/04/2023 09:01

Dunkin donuts is better than Costa or Starbucks.

Hoppinggreen · 28/04/2023 09:04

I have a bean to cup so don’t often have a coffee out.
However, DS persuaded me to go to Cafe Nero yesterday and I had a decent coffee and a very nice Brie and roasted tomato focaccia

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 28/04/2023 09:05

McDonald's and Greggs both do surprisingly nice coffee.

KimberleyClark · 28/04/2023 09:06

Independent organic coffee shop round the corner from where I live is my gold standard. Coffee #1 is also good.

Fantina · 28/04/2023 09:06

I don’t like any chain store coffee. I have a few chosen local independent cafes where I love the coffee but I’m particularly fussy. I’d rather not have one than have a crap cup of coffee because I’m not the kind of person who can drink it anyway.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/04/2023 09:07

Costa and Starbucks both make me feel sick and thirsty. Costa more so because of the disgusting and dirty interior they always seem to have.

our local independent is the best, but it’s in a park so you have to be prepared to shiver for the coffee on a cold day!

Yes. In a motorway service station if the choice was between Starbucks and Greggs, Greggs every time.

VisionsOfSplendour · 28/04/2023 09:08

I have no clue how you're expecting the voting to work as there doesn't seem to be an AIBU but there's no such thing as the best coffee as it's personal taste

I really don't like Costa Coffee for example but millions on other people clearly do, my taste buds aren't going to change though so I choose not to go there

Maybe try them and find out which one your taste buds prefer

Fantina · 28/04/2023 09:09

I don’t like any ‘push button’ coffee so McDonalds and Greggs etc are automatically out and I have tried both in desperation in the past.

Lifesyoungdream · 28/04/2023 09:09

I don’t drink a lot of coffee but on my walk there are two coffee vans which sell good coffee. I prefer giving my money to the small independent places rather than the big chain places.

No idea why I opened this thread as I don't drink coffee, but noth Macdonalds and Greg's do a decent hot chocolate, for half the price of everywhere else!

Squishedstormtrooper · 28/04/2023 09:12

At home I use coffee beans from a local coffee shop but when I’m out I’m a sucker for a caramel macchiato from Starbucks- liquid sugar my DP calls it. I’m not a fan of McDonald’s lattes they always taste too milky. I was very surprised when I heard on the radio the caffeine difference between costa and Starbucks though!

SaturdayGiraffe · 28/04/2023 09:12

Monmouth coffee is consistently nice but you don’t say where you are. Try supporting your local roasters first and see what you enjoy.

Capitulatingpanda · 28/04/2023 09:13

Generally places where they roast their own beans, preferably within the coffee shop. I wouldn't bother with any of the high st chains and it's barely much better in a lot of cafes.

Peccary · 28/04/2023 09:17

The independent in our train station is the best in town. Of the chains I choose Costa, can't drink Starbucks and will have Nero occasionally

Woahtherehoney · 28/04/2023 09:17

I’m lucky where I live we don’t have any chains (apart from a costa express machine in a couple of shops) but have some amazing independent coffee shops and my favourite coffee comes from there.

From chains though I like Paul and Cafe Nero, the rest I could take or leave. Black Sheep Coffee is good too.

WheelsUp · 28/04/2023 09:19

My local independent cafe and van (different companies) are the best and cost the same as high street chains.
Out of the chains I'd say Nero-Costa-Pret
If I'm in a Starbucks I will get anything other than coffee which I think is super poor quality. I get much better results on my home machine which isn't an expensive professional model.
Greggs and McDonalds are underrated and decent budget choices.

anotherside · 28/04/2023 09:21

Can’t stand Costa - very strong and bitter, without actually tasting much of coffee. It’s terrible that it’s the biggest chain in Britain as it’s often the only option. The other big names are much of a muchness, independents are usually better.

KimberleyClark · 28/04/2023 09:21

We have a local chain called Coffi Lab which supports guide dogs and is of course dog friendly (sells a choice of dog treats) and their coffee is great too.

I agree but they're not consistent. Can be hit or miss.

Devoutspoken · 28/04/2023 09:23

Isn't macdonalds and pret the same coffee?

anotherside · 28/04/2023 09:23

The Costa taste I would describe as “We might be using the cheapest and nastiest tasting beans we could find - but rest assured you’ll get plenty of them”.
