The word 'belly'

eighteentwentytwo · 27/04/2023 18:24

I'm a southerner in the north and I'm wondering if 'belly' has the same awful connotations that it has where I came from.

My son is using it all the time and I hate it! I would prefer he said 'tummy'. AIBU?

What awful connotations does belly have?

I am a southerner, never heard this before.

eighteentwentytwo · 27/04/2023 18:26

Really not a nice word, not polite

Tell me more about the awful connotations of belly? Beer belly, belly piercing, belly dancing, belly button, pork belly... all sound fine to me.

gooseduckchicken · 27/04/2023 18:27

I don't know the connotations of belly but the word "tummy" turns by stomach (pardon the pun!) when said by anyone over the age of 5.

Similarly "veggies" [shudder]

My son is in reception

Yabu. also a southerner..

PotatoCatkin · 27/04/2023 18:28

I absolutely hate the word, won't use it (unless it's said with 'button') and can't bear family using it either!

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 27/04/2023 18:29

If I serve something tasty at tea time, my 9yo loudly exclaims "Get in my belly!" in a hilariously broad northern accent. Not sure you'd like to come for tea at our house 😂

Fairislefandango · 27/04/2023 18:29

I'm a southerner in the north too and have never been aware of any remotely 'awful connotations'. Nor have I heard it the word any more in the north than in the south. I find the word slightly irritating, but it's certainly not rude.

SapphosRock · 27/04/2023 18:30

Awful connotations?!

neilyoungismyhero · 27/04/2023 18:31

I'm a Southerner too and never heard of this.

Really? Never ever heard of this!

AlwaysGinPlease · 27/04/2023 18:32

Loathe the word. It's tummy or stomach. Belly is so crass.

NeatCompactSleeper · 27/04/2023 18:32

I'm a Southerner and have no idea what you're talking about.

MrSand · 27/04/2023 18:33

"tummy" is an abbreviation of "stomach" which is a particular organ right of the top of the abdomen - some of it is behind the ribcage. It's applied more widely as a euphemism.

"Belly" is a great word, more accurate, more descriptive, less bowdlerized and euphemistic.

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 27/04/2023 18:33

I hate the word 'tummy' it's a bit twee.

It's belly here. Fat belly in my case

Lolabear38 · 27/04/2023 18:33

It doesn’t have ‘awful connotations’, it’s a word you don’t like. Don’t use it. YABU.

The word tummy has always made my skin crawl too! Especially when adults use it and aren't referring to children! Like tummy bug etc.

inhabitantoffrance · 27/04/2023 18:33

I hate the word but it just means stomach... or doesn't it?!

Thelastofbus · 27/04/2023 18:34

Im from the south and had no idea the word was ‘not polite’. But I have to
admit i don’t like the word. It gives me the ick in a way that ‘tummy’ doesn’t. I have no idea why.

MisanthropicMe · 27/04/2023 18:35

YABU! There's no awful connotations with the word 'belly'. It is what it is. I'm Scottish and find the word 'tummy' very twee.

mimbleandlittlemy · 27/04/2023 18:35

Southerner, not got a clue what you are talking about. Tummy is cute to the age of about 3, I suppose, but after that it's just nauseating, like 'panties'. Shudder.

FlounderingFruitcake · 27/04/2023 18:35

Belly is awful I agree but tummy isn’t much better and it’s toe curling to hear anyone except toddlers say it. Stomach e.g. stomach ache is much better.

*This is obviously excluding when belly would be the correct and only thing to say that makes sense e.g. belly button or pork belly- if you said you were doing a pig’s stomach for Sunday lunch I don’t think you would get many takers 🤣

WomensLandArmy · 27/04/2023 18:35

Also raised in the south and dislike the word for being 'common'. Prefer tummy when talking to children and stomach when talking to adults and medical professionals. 'when the baby was in my belly' kind of sentence really makes me cringe. No idea why.

StopFeckingFaffing · 27/04/2023 18:36

What awful connotations?

I get that it is a slang word and not one you would find in a medical dictionary but so is tummy

I've no idea what is 'rude' or 'crass' about it (I'm Northern though!)
