The word 'belly'

eighteentwentytwo · 27/04/2023 18:24

I'm a southerner in the north and I'm wondering if 'belly' has the same awful connotations that it has where I came from.

My son is using it all the time and I hate it! I would prefer he said 'tummy'. AIBU?

Another mc southerner here and I hate it too. I'm not entirely sure why but it definitely wasn't used when I was growing up and I wouldn't use it now.

TheOtherHotstepper · 27/04/2023 18:51

Where I live, we call it 'pork draft'. Much naicer.

TragicMuse · 27/04/2023 18:51

Oh I can't bear belly. It's entirely no for me!

I only use it when ordering the specific cut of pork and even then I'm not at all comfortable, mostly I really hate saying it.

Georgie8 · 27/04/2023 18:52

Don’t use the word but am not particularly offended by it. On the other hand @Luredbyapomegranate …..moist 🤢

Also raised in the south and dislike the word for being 'common'. Prefer tummy when talking to children and stomach when talking to adults and medical professionals. 'when the baby was in my belly' kind of sentence really makes me cringe. No idea why.

Same here and I'm from the south.

OMGitsnotgood · 27/04/2023 18:52

i'm a northerner born and bred and never use the word. We were from a normal working class background and for whatever reason I can't explain it was always considered vulgar. We always said tummy.

Fuerza · 27/04/2023 18:53

I never knew that tummy was considered more vulgar than Belly. Belly only sounds right with beer before it.

Snugglemonkey · 27/04/2023 18:54

I hate belly. I do not say it unless it is preceded by pork or followed by button.

Tummy when speaking to small children, stomach otherwise.

tallcypowder · 27/04/2023 18:54

DancingWithTheMoonlitKnight · 27/04/2023 18:33

I hate the word 'tummy' it's a bit twee.

It's belly here. Fat belly in my case

Tummy makes me wince.

Belly is ok for slang but wouldnt use it in an adult conversation.

Silvergoldandglitter · 27/04/2023 18:55

Oh and I also hate the word gut. Terrible word.

Squidger45 · 27/04/2023 18:56

JenniferBarkley · 27/04/2023 18:37

People might think she's <whispers> working class.

clutches pearls god, no!! Not working class! 🤣

Cocolocobaby · 27/04/2023 18:57

I cringe at belly .
I say tummy. I work in a nursery and I am pregnant . The staff keep telling the children that there is a ‘baby in Kate’s belly ‘.
I cringe !!!

trisfreya · 27/04/2023 18:58

I'm a southerner in the South, and this news to me

Bookloverlover · 27/04/2023 18:59

I'm from the south and know of absolutely no bad connotations for belly?

beeskipa · 27/04/2023 18:59

I've never heard of it being known as rude or impolite, that seems weird.

I don't particularly like it, or tummy, though. They're words you use with children.

Riapia · 27/04/2023 18:59

Women have tummies.
Men have bellies.

Has anybody ever heard of an overweight woman described as having a beer belly?

Bunnyhair · 27/04/2023 18:59

The only person who can acceptably use the word tummy is Winnie the fucking Pooh.

Belly is fine.

FpTr3952fHp · 27/04/2023 18:59

I think you're right that it's regional. I'm in the Midlands and never use or hear anyone use tummy, it sounds too twee. Belly is more amusing, beer belly, belly flop and that TV advert 'Belly's gonna get you, Belly's gonna get you, Belly, Belly, Belly, Belly ! 🤣

SummerLover01 · 27/04/2023 19:00

Quit yer belly aching

😂

Okunevo · 27/04/2023 19:00

I'm not understanding what people call the outside of their belly, not organs inside. Just 'my abdomen'?

eighteentwentytwo · 27/04/2023 18:26

Really not a nice word, not polite

It’s no different to ‘tummy’.

Why is it not nice?

If he is telling you you have a big belly then it would mean the exact same as him saying you have a big tummy.

People always say pregnant women’s belly’s are getting big.

Isitthathardtobekind · 27/04/2023 19:02

Also in the south and not heard about awful connotations but never say belly because I hate it!

Liorae · 27/04/2023 19:02

Oysterbabe · 27/04/2023 18:42

Do you have a belly button or do you call it something else?

Navel? Just as tummy is stomach and belly is abdomen. Just use the correct terms instead of cutesy abbreviations.
