To ask lovely mumsnetters about their experience of driving MG HS cars?

We have to swap our non ulez compliant car. I don't drive and husband was about to buy an MGHS. We saw one being parked in a car park and the driver, a mum with two children in the back, said it was a great car. He is now reading reviews which say the engine is rough at high revs and the gears can be clunky. What is your experience?

Hmmm, I’d be tempted to agree. They can be quite clunky and stiff to drive with a fair amount of road noise. They certainly don’t drive like a newly developed car does if that makes sense?

Depends what you’re moving from as to how much of an issue that is really.

They’re a bit marmite-like so would recommend test driving before totally writing it off though - you might love it.

Drwho..do you have an MGHS? He had a fifteen minute test in a hybrid MG using the petrol as it hadn't been charged. His current car is a 14 year old diesel Volvo, had it for 12+ years. Last few cars have been Volvo's bought nearly new.We now do about 3 thousand miles per year, so were looking to avoid the Volvo prices.

Not currently.

I had the GS briefly - not a fan, rattly, clunky and handled like a Skoda from the late 90’s. Test drove the HS when I wanted to switch but went for a 500x as the GS replacement in the end. The HS drive wasn’t sufficiently better than the GS for the price difference (in my opinion)

I also (through the work I was doing at the time) have driven quite a few of the MG3 when they were initially rolled out in the U.K. so knew the brand quite well.

They are no where near as smooth as Volvos - I used to drive an ancient V50 that had over 200k on the clock, handled like a barge but the ride was so smooth. You’re not paying Volvo prices with the MG though so that’s the pay off.

@Mammajay sorry old post! Did you buy a mg hs?

We are currently looking at them for our next car. We are due to update our current car but the payments will double for the same car. Confused

MG are known for being unreliable which would put me off.
