Strava stolen subscription money

Supersteer · 26/04/2023 08:49

I recently did an event to raise money for charity, I needed to supply Strava data as 'proof' - I used the free month service as I didn't have Strava before.

I cancelled the free subscription the day after I took it, so that I wouldn't forget about it and be billed.

I took a screenshot as proof and kept the confirmation email.

I was still billed £54.99! I got in touch with PayPal to dispute it and gave all my proof, but they've refused it.

I worked so hard to raise £135 for a local hospice that looked after my dad as he died, not a lot of money but I really don't have much and nor do my friends/family but I was so proud to raise anything.

This £54.99 is just a huge amount to me.

Beware of Strava! Hope it doesn't happen to anyone else. :(

Have you contacted Strava and explained what happened?

cantkeepupwiththejoneses · 26/04/2023 08:54

Oh that's shit.

I've had an app subscription cancelled no problem with apple before. Are you apple or android?

Supersteer · 26/04/2023 08:55

Yes, they said I had to raise a claim with PayPal but my claim was refused.

Android!

I know I cancelled and have proof but they say they have no record that it was cancelled and I did not cancel prior to the free month ending.

So gutted.

Thats strange? PayPal procedure is to contact the merchant so strava must have told them you didn't cancel

BurntOutGirl · 26/04/2023 09:33

Shame you did the subscription as most of Strava is free to use.

I'd raise a dispute to paypal again

AuntieStella · 26/04/2023 09:42

You don't have to pay at all to use to Strava

But they have been having a drive to get more people on to the paid/subscription/premier service, and it sounds like they must have changed the sign-up procedure to make the free version less obvious. That strikes me as sharp practice.

The free trial of the paid service says that Strava sends a reminder two days before payment begins. Can they demonstrate they sent that?

beautifulyoungmind · 26/04/2023 11:11

Strava is free.
You can sign up to a 1 month trial of their subscription service which gives you enhanced features such as route, planning, detailed metrics, data, beacon sharing etc.
I suspect the free one-month trial button looks like it applied to all use of Strava which is why you clicked on it but this isn't the case.
My mum keeps signing up to Amazon Prime by accident and I have to keep cancelling it for her before she gets charged. It's just a question of reading the detail before you click or at least setting a diary reminder to cancel before the subscription kicks in.

I’d contact PayPal directly on the phone

It doesn’t sound right but also how did you use PayPal to subscribe I can’t see it as an option

Supersteer · 27/04/2023 09:05

Just to update, I have a refund!!

No luck via PayPal, no luck via Strava and my bank couldn't do anything.

Last attempt was contacting Google Play again with evidence that I cancelled the subscription- they've just said they'll refund!

Just incase anyone else finds this and it helps, tell Google play that it was unauthorised.
