To wonder how many threads are being started by Chat GPT?

I noticed on OLD a year or so ago that in conversation after conversation I was talking to some kind of automated bot. It put me right off. I keep wondering if it was an early form of chat got being tested.
Recently there are some threads that seem to be the very essence of Mumsnet complaints - but lacking a slight sense of self-awareness, whilst being very well written grammatically. The same sort of blandness that chat gpt answers have.
Not quite sure what my point is - did anyone else notice the bot thing on OLD?

@CornishGem1975 i wonder what the differences would be if you asked it to start a similar netmums thread?

TeenDivided · 26/04/2023 09:03

or reply on netmums

Popular/general forums have been full of fake posts and threads for years - many of which are made by the owners to drive traffic. The real world gets more attractive by the day.

Also, remember when search engines would find interesting websites? No just about every result is a mainstream newspaper, a cheap sales site, or some lengthy SEO ridden copypaste nonsense. I'm becoming more bored with it by the day.

My knowledge of this is limited - got put off messing about with it as the website was often restricted - but I thought Chat GPT had to be accessed via a website where it responds to prompts. Like a much more advanced Ask Jeeves. So it couldn’t ‘decide’ to go into a forum and start a thread, although obviously a human being could run threads where all the text has been generated by the AI. And I’d be amazed at this point if this hasn’t happened.

There are various connectors you can write or use to plugin into selected sites. And it's possible to write your own if you are so minded. Programmatically interacting with a website isn't rocket science.

I am looking forward to the day when entire forums are populated by chatbots, all merrily talking to each other. Which will probably not long after someone starts a YouTube channel where "Chatbots review chatbots".

Anyone told ChatGPT it's made a mistake ? Remember it "learns".

Can someone enlighten me as to what this is.

Oops my bad!

No, that is perfect because it presents the opportunity for the SPAG police to derail the thread by picking apart your/ChatGPTs use of US spellings.

I keep meaning to look up ChatGPT because I have no idea what it is/does, apart from being 'AI' and I'm suddenly seeing it mentioned everywhere.

FreddiesTeeth · 26/04/2023 09:22

There was one thread in particular that made me wonder about this. It was an initial post which was well-writted but with poor critical thinking and clearly designed to elicit strong responses. It seemed like a temperature test about an area of policy tbh and posters did point out that this might be its purpose
I thought policy wonk initially too but a chatbot seems just as likely I suppose.

I wish I lived a life where I didn't need to know what ChatGPT is. Or AI.

as it is, I don't have the brainpower to explain it. Think of it as tech that writes like a person.

wrinkleintime · 26/04/2023 09:25

Why would ChatGPT be starting threads here? Do you mean you think ChatGPT is doing this of its own volition, or people are using it to write the wording? The latter is much more likely although still a bit odd.

TheKobayashiMaru · 26/04/2023 09:27

Yes there are those threads on here. Goady OP then no further updates, happening quite often.

The microwave story... Apologies for Mirror link but it seemed the safest one
https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/weird-news/man-who-gave-microwave-artificial-26823597

Any story that starts "YouTuber" can be safely ignored, don't worry.

You sound like you're wearing a tin foil hat tbh.

It's seems to be happening far more these days than it has in the past

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 26/04/2023 15:32

A tangent, but you can weed out bots quickly in OLD - ask whoever you're messaging to say potato. The bots will blithely carry on as it's not in their script.

Emigratingimmigrant · 26/04/2023 15:33

I think there was few. There is something about how they are written

Write an opening post for Mumsnet to start a thread about my child who has been bitten by another toddler at nursery. Use the style of previous posters and British English spelling.

Hello Mumsnetters,
I'm feeling quite concerned and upset about something that happened to my child at nursery today. Unfortunately, my little one was bitten by another toddler while playing, and now I'm not sure what to do.
Has this happened to anyone else's child before? How did you handle the situation? Did you speak to the nursery staff or the other child's parents? Did you notice any changes in your child's behaviour after the incident?
I'm feeling a bit lost and would really appreciate any advice or support from the Mumsnet community.
Thank you in advance.

I’m not sure ChatGPT could quite pull together a thread, could it?

People always overestimate what it can do.

write a post for mumsnet about a bridezilla

Dear Mumsnet community,

I recently attended a wedding as a bridesmaid where the bride's behavior left me feeling shocked and appalled. I never thought I would witness such bridezilla behavior in real life, but unfortunately, it was a reality for me.

From the moment the engagement was announced, the bride was demanding and controlling. She had a clear vision of how she wanted her wedding to be, and any deviation from that vision was met with anger and frustration. She would frequently lash out at her bridesmaids and family members, leaving them feeling hurt and confused.

One particular incident that stands out was when the bride had a meltdown because her chosen flowers were not available on her wedding day. She screamed at the florist and demanded that they find a way to get the flowers, even though it was impossible. Her behavior was embarrassing, and it made me wonder if she even cared about the people around her or just her own desires.

The bride was also very critical of her bridesmaids' appearances. She insisted that we all have the same hairstyle and wear the same makeup, even though some of us felt uncomfortable with the look. She also demanded that we lose weight before the wedding and made snide comments about our bodies. It was hurtful and unnecessary.

Overall, the bridezilla behavior made the wedding day a stressful and unpleasant experience for everyone involved. It's important to remember that a wedding is about celebrating love and commitment, not about fulfilling one person's unrealistic expectations. I hope that brides-to-be will take note and remember to treat their loved ones with kindness and respect during this special time.

Sincerely,
A concerned bridesmaid.

They do all seem to have been written by a paid contributor to an American parenting website, rather than real people on a British chat site.

TeenDivided · 26/04/2023 15:52

You do need to specify British English to stop spelling such as 'behavior' or American terminology such as 'fall'.
I think you could probably ask it to swear a bit - that might make it pass better!

BarbaraofSeville · 26/04/2023 15:54

People could have (and are probably already having) a lot of fun with getting it to write MN posts. I'm now thinking one I saw the other day must have been one (it was about some sort of terrible DH behaviour - financial abuse, lack of housework or always off doing his hobbies that seemed just a little too far beyond reality and into exaggeration for effect). I think he'd bought himself two sports cars while the OP was forced to buy her clothes in charity shops.

Definitely something to bear in mind when reading posts that seem a little too far fetched.

SerendipityJane · 26/04/2023 16:01

Except it will learn. It's an iterative process. Only this morning I was shown a days worth of marketing content that had been produced in less than a minute. As the manager said, if that had been submitted by a person, they'd be headhunted in a week.

"AI wrangler" is the career to mark. It should already be a core part of every discipline post A-level. Obviously it won't be, because the skills needed to teach it aren't going to be tempted into teaching at any price.

midsomermurderess · 26/04/2023 16:01

Posts being very well written grammatically would certainly make me question whether they had been written by a Mumsnetter😉
