Just wondering if anyone can help me with this.. I was reading and I suddenly realised my vision was blotchy and coloured. Like when you stare at a light for too long and try to look away and you can still see coloured splodges in your vision. It’s like that, but I didn’t look at a light and it’s not going away. Even typing this is hard as when I’m typing one word I can’t fully see what I’m reading because of the coloured splodges. Like when I look at the world splodges I. Can see half of it but not the other half because everything looks coloured and splodgey. I went off my phone, stopped reading and let me eyes relax but it’s not going away and it’s getting annoying. Does anyone else have this and have any advice? It’s not blurry at all it’s just the coloured splodges but they’re not black like floaters, I can’t really focus on them but it’s in both eyes and it feels like I’ve been staring at a lightbulb but I haven’t

this post took me so long to type out word by wore but does anyone have any advice please because this is absolutely horrible x

even when I’m looking at what I just typed when I look at the word horrible I can’t see half of it I can only see horrib and that’s it and not the x either unless I move my eyes but then I can’t see other things

Glad you're feeling better this morning @Flowerpower6. And great that you'll be getting checked out so quickly. All the very best.

bellswithwhistles · 26/04/2023 09:50

Migraine. Got this whilst pregnant. Super scary.

SchoolTripDrama · 26/04/2023 09:52

First time I had this I was 9. I get it about 12-15 times per year. I've had an MRI but no known cause was found.
Did you feel a bit nauseous as well, OP? Any headache? If yes to both then my best guess would be a Migraine but glad you're getting checked properly

SchoolTripDrama · 26/04/2023 09:53

I'll never forget watching tv at age 9 and only seeing half of people's faces and not knowing why. My Mum got migraines too so she was totally unconcerned! Confused

Bossyourbathroom · 26/04/2023 09:54

I have these, and they are horrible. I had my first one when I was about 13 and was a bit scared until my mum said it was a migraine (she has them too). Flashing lights and zig-zags and blotches (like the photo posted by Fryanddry), followed by a three-day headache from Hell. I had them every day during one of my pregnancies, though without the headache, weirdly. That sounds the most likely thing, OP, but you're very sensible to get it checked as you've not had it before.

Spidey66 · 26/04/2023 09:56

I get that before a migraine.

queenatom · 26/04/2023 10:01

Glad it's passed OP and good that you're getting checked out just to be safe. I have migraines with aura and they always freak me out when they first start before I realise that's what's happening, particularly as I also have a history of eye health issues including sudden vision loss. I also remember my dad having one out of the blue for the first time when he was in his late 40s and rushing to A&E because he thought he was having a stroke - they're really alarming!

KnackeredAF · 26/04/2023 10:10

Not sure of your age or sex OP but if on combined pill as contraception this will need reviewing ASAP as migraine with aura is one of the reasons it should be avoided. See what Boots say but if they feel migraine with aura then contact GP surgery to review meds if needed.

MadKittenWoman · 26/04/2023 10:18

Probably will be a migraine, but if it doesn’t seem to develop how about seeing if you can get an eye test? My local Specsavers do all the high-tech eye examinations and can usually see you quickly if you are concerned about something.

Visual aura migraine. Get off your screens, stop reading, rest your eyes!

I get these too, with and without the headaches. For me it is often brought on my staying on my screen too long, simple eyestrain.

Turfwars · 26/04/2023 10:29

I got an aura migrane at work one morning. It's very disconcerting to happen especially as I had no pain, just the visual disturbances.

I'd gotten ordinary migranes before with the blinding sore head and even ones where I vomited, but never that one before.

Glad you are ok now.

Nowthenhere · 26/04/2023 10:37

Your symptoms could be detatched retina which require emergency opthamology treatment. The only way to be sure and to get treatment is A&E.

It can cause permanent blindness if not treated quickly. They will look behind the eye which an optician cannot, though they can rule out other concerns.

People who use screens are at higher risk of detached retina and cataracts. It's why there's lots of campaigns for children to not use screens as much in school.

Elspethelf · 26/04/2023 10:50

Came to say it doesn’t sound like retinal detachment, but I see it’s resolved. Feel better OP!

NeonBoomerang · 26/04/2023 11:00

It sounds like optic neuritis. It began for me in December. I work in A&E and was advised to visit my optician for an eye health check. I phoned Specsavers and told them what I just told you and they got me in within the hour. Once there it was discovered that I had fluid and swelling on the optic nerve. The optician called the hospital and got me an emergency opthalmology appointment for the same day. I went on to develop further symptoms and it was caused by an underlying condition in my case but it may well be different for you.

I wouldn't bother going to A&E - they don't hwvw the expertise when it comes to specialist atuff like this. They'll refer you to the eye clinic who in turn will ask you to go to the optician first.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

NeonBoomerang · 26/04/2023 11:01

Well that serves me right for not reading all op's posts! I'm glad you're feeling better now. I must say I'm quite envious of you because five months later it's still happening for me.

Marmunia10661975 · 26/04/2023 11:35

Hey OP, I had this yesterday. I was on the computer when I developed a blind bit to the right. If I looked straight ahead, I had a fuzzy bit to the right. I also had zigzags around the blurred bit to the far right, all in the right eye. I have never had migraines before but I am thinking this might be my one and only menopause symptom. I'm 48 and haven't had a period for about a year. Started spotting yesterday too. No headache though.

Iwasafool · 26/04/2023 11:35

Not quite the same but I got flashing lights, I kept thinking cars were passing me and I was seeing headlights. Phoned and told to get straight to hospital. Doctor came down to A&E from the eye ward and they were worried I had a detached retina, it wasn't but I had a couple of appointments to keep a watch on it and discharged and told if it happened again to get straight to hospital.

I wouldn't mess about with eye sight so I'd get professional advice. Hope it is OK.

KrasiTime · 26/04/2023 12:15

Good luck op.

Loss of parts of your visual field is not a peri-bloody-menopause symptom.

It’s significant focal neurology and needs checking out urgently!

CrepuscularCritter · 26/04/2023 13:43

I'm glad you are being seen, OP, and that you got some relief. It is really scary when it first happens and you don't know the cause.

I have both migraines with aura and eye disease, which can lead to retinal detachment, so I need to be proactive about getting checked.

Two precursors to migraine with aura for me are the tip of my nose going numb, or being in a vehicle and passing through dappled sunlight through trees. I've been advised to go to the emergency eye clinic if I get a sensation like a curtain dropping in my vision as that can be a sign of retinal detachment. I have been twice when I was unsure and got checked out OK both times. It is much better to be seen soon as a precaution.

Smoky1107 · 26/04/2023 14:49

I get this, tends to resolve itself within an hour

TheLostNights · 26/04/2023 14:51

Migraine with aura. I get these a lot.

Uh, yes it is - it's a migraine aura.

If aura is present, (meaning neurological symptoms -usually visual- which come and go within the hour before the headache phase starts,) rising levels of oestrogen can aggravate the brain and trigger attacks.

Some women get migraine with and without aura in different attacks. It is also possible to have migraine aura, (flashing lights or zigzags or even blind spots in the visual fields,) but no headache at all.

KrasiTime · 28/04/2023 07:00

How did you get on at the opticians op?
