Just wondering if anyone can help me with this.. I was reading and I suddenly realised my vision was blotchy and coloured. Like when you stare at a light for too long and try to look away and you can still see coloured splodges in your vision. It’s like that, but I didn’t look at a light and it’s not going away. Even typing this is hard as when I’m typing one word I can’t fully see what I’m reading because of the coloured splodges. Like when I look at the world splodges I. Can see half of it but not the other half because everything looks coloured and splodgey. I went off my phone, stopped reading and let me eyes relax but it’s not going away and it’s getting annoying. Does anyone else have this and have any advice? It’s not blurry at all it’s just the coloured splodges but they’re not black like floaters, I can’t really focus on them but it’s in both eyes and it feels like I’ve been staring at a lightbulb but I haven’t

this post took me so long to type out word by wore but does anyone have any advice please because this is absolutely horrible x

even when I’m looking at what I just typed when I look at the word horrible I can’t see half of it I can only see horrib and that’s it and not the x either unless I move my eyes but then I can’t see other things

Visual migraine, though if it’s your first ever I’d get checked out just to be sure.
I had my first a couple of months ago ( and I’m 60) no pain, just the weird visual disturbance as you describe. I used to get visual disturbance with regular, painful migraines pre- menopause.

My migraines have come back with hormones and age. I get these types of migraines a couple of days before my periods start and is probably perimenopause as I had them in early teens as well. Go for an eye test anyway if this is your first , but it could be hormone related.

SybilWrites · 26/04/2023 06:13

I get these - an ocular migraine. Sometimes goes on to develop into a "normal" migraine, sometimes not. Goes after a couple of hours though. Hope you feel ok today OP.

Walkingintheminefield · 26/04/2023 06:13

You would probably be best not to assume the cause of your symptoms can be diagnosed on this forum (apologies to any medically qualified posters) without seeking medical advice. As per someone else's post it could be a detached retina (lots of floaters in the eye can be a sign - which my DP ignored for a while until it became more serious) so best to get attention and rule this out asap.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 26/04/2023 06:14

OP, hopefully it’s just a migraine but please get yourself to an optometrist asap. Preferably one with an oct machine (I know some Boots opticians have them, I have this check at my eye test with them) which checks the back of your eye by scanning it. GPs cannot do a thorough eye check.

get booked in asap as an emergency appointment-mention the vision distortions and any other symptoms on the phone to them.

DahliaRose · 26/04/2023 06:19

I had this exact thing about 2 months ago, came on one evening and I couldn't see out of one side of my eye.

I expected it to be gone the next morning but it wasn't. I went to the optician who was baffled and said it sounded like a visual migraine but I didn't have any pain or headache.

She did lots of checks to make sure. Wasn't my retina which it wasn't and told me so come back if it didn't improve.

It lasted about 1-2 weeks then just went away gradually.

i think so, I noticed it when I was reading and I blinked hard a few times thinking I had accidentally looked at the light but it didn’t go away then I realised it was obstructing my vision. As I’m typing this I can see one particular splodeg (there’s lots) and it’s sort of flickering and moving and I think it’s blueish in colour and it’s just to the side of my central vision which is why I can only see part of a line or a word because it’s sort of blocking it

This sounds EXACTLY like how my visual migraines present. I get the visual disturbance without the headaches. Hope you’re feeling better now OP.

ZED55JAX0 · 26/04/2023 06:25

I have had this two or three times it’s scary and anxiety made it worse I laid In dark for an hour and it went the gp diagnosed it as a aura migraine I think it was called so a type of migraine but without the pain!!

ZED55JAX0 · 26/04/2023 06:25

Also to add mine were hormone and stress related

EmpressSoleil · 26/04/2023 06:25

I get aura migraines quite frequently, never have an actual migraine with pain. For me it’s worse when I need new glasses or too much time working on the laptop without breaks. I agree it sounds like this is that. It is scary the first time it happens so I can understand your fear.

Redissus · 26/04/2023 06:29

Another one here who gets the visual disturbances without a migraine. There doesn’t seem to be any particular trigger, they seem to start randomly with a tiny shimmer in one eye then build to near loss of vision in that eye, then gradually fade and disappear. Probably last about 15 minutes every 3 months or so. I can just carry on with what I’m doing, luckily haven’t occurred when I’m driving.

romdowa · 26/04/2023 06:30

It could be anything really. Any symptoms which come on suddenly really need to be checked out. Lots of conditions can mimic others. Go see a dr

Sleepyandconfused · 26/04/2023 06:31

I had this! It was horrible. Turns out it was a migraine. I’d never got it before but have had only a couple since. I also have had similar vision issues when I have panic attacks. Don’t worry. Every time, I dealt with it by going to sleep and woke up with it gone!

Weird! Mine happened on the first day of my period each time!

ForTheSakeOfThePenguin · 26/04/2023 06:34

Migraine with aura / silent migraine? When I get them they don’t hurt but my vision gets very much as you describe. I take ibuprofen and wait for it to pass.

Mind you, if you suffer from high blood pressure (I did when pregnant), it is a good idea to pop into the pharmacy for a blood pressure check (much easier to access than getting a GP appointment these days!).

LittleDitto · 26/04/2023 06:41

Really interested to see that others have linked it to hormones too!

AmytheDancingBrick · 26/04/2023 06:43

OP - if this is a migraine, which it could be, it should be diagnosed by a doctor, not by mumsnet. Please make an appointment if you haven’t already done so.

NewChange · 26/04/2023 06:48

Ocular migraine sufferer here too and it does sound very similar. Hope you get reassurance from an optician. They are alarming but at least not painful - they do put you out of action for a while though. I have to lie down eyes shut for minimum half an hour.

OutDamnedSpot · 26/04/2023 06:54

Please call 111 or go to A&E. Yes, it could be an aura (and if you’d had migraines before you’d know that, pop your meds and go to bed) but there are other things it could be too and as it’s your first experience of this it needs checking.

Daffodilsandtuplips · 26/04/2023 06:54

I get this with migraine, it starts off that I can’t see the centre of whatever I’m looking at, I can see the peripheral vision but then after a while the central vision comes back, Zig zag coloured flashing lights then start to appear around the periphery until it’s like a disco of lights in my eye. It lasts about 30 minutes. I have to close my eyes until it’s gone. It always heralded a sick headache but nowadays I just feel off colour after it.

SoCunningYouCanStickATailOnItAndCallItAFox · 26/04/2023 06:54

I get these types of migraines sometimes, it's like a sparkly kaleidoscope vision experience for me. They don't develop into full migraine for me though I used to get those when I was going through puberty.
It freaked me out the first time it happened too.

Emotionalsupportviper · 26/04/2023 06:56

matisses6fingers · 26/04/2023 01:33

Hi op I get this before a migraine. I can only see half of people’s faces, hands go numb and sometimes I see flashing lights and stars.

if you’re worried though then phone 111

I was going to suggest it might be migraine, too.

I get a visual disturbance as a precursor. Mine is a jagged semicircle of triangles in bright colours that floats across my visual field, backwards and forwards obscuring what is in front of me.

briansgardenshed · 26/04/2023 06:59

Same. I get the splodge or sometimes the kaleidoscope - and blinding migraine headaches. But OP needs to check it with a medical professional - because it could be a number of other things.

Wafflesandcrepes · 26/04/2023 07:00

My guess would be migraine with aura. Please go to your GP asap. Mine took me off the pill I was on I immediately when I had my first migraine.
