Just wondering if anyone can help me with this.. I was reading and I suddenly realised my vision was blotchy and coloured. Like when you stare at a light for too long and try to look away and you can still see coloured splodges in your vision. It’s like that, but I didn’t look at a light and it’s not going away. Even typing this is hard as when I’m typing one word I can’t fully see what I’m reading because of the coloured splodges. Like when I look at the world splodges I. Can see half of it but not the other half because everything looks coloured and splodgey. I went off my phone, stopped reading and let me eyes relax but it’s not going away and it’s getting annoying. Does anyone else have this and have any advice? It’s not blurry at all it’s just the coloured splodges but they’re not black like floaters, I can’t really focus on them but it’s in both eyes and it feels like I’ve been staring at a lightbulb but I haven’t

this post took me so long to type out word by wore but does anyone have any advice please because this is absolutely horrible x

even when I’m looking at what I just typed when I look at the word horrible I can’t see half of it I can only see horrib and that’s it and not the x either unless I move my eyes but then I can’t see other things

Same here except it was school not town.

sorry you've been through it too. I didn't want to tell my parents as I had just gone on the pill and didn't want them knowing. I thought I was dying instead and was just going to accept that fate!

Goodyetalso · 26/04/2023 02:35

Ocular migraine. Sometimes comes with a horrible headache but sometimes occurs in its own. Some people get them before the actual headache but I always get mine after having a bad headache for a long time and as the visual disturbance starts to fade the headache starts to ease. My friend gets them without any headache at all. They’re frightening when you’re not used to them but harmless. If your vision isn’t normal within about 30-40 minutes of it starting call 111 but otherwise you shouldn’t need to as they are common.

JMSA · 26/04/2023 02:46

You poor folks who get this regularly. It sounds really scary. Can I ask you, does it ever come on suddenly, like when you're driving? Or do you know when it's coming?

It’s always sudden for me but so far I’ve never had an attack whilst driving. I sometimes wonder what I would do if that happened because I know I’d only have about 30 seconds to make a plan and pull over somewhere before I can’t see.

CherryRipe1 · 26/04/2023 02:53

@fryanddry that's exactly what my freind and I both get, we call it sharks teeth.

Hi op I get this before a migraine. I can only see half of people’s faces, hands go numb and sometimes I see flashing lights and stars.

if you’re worried though then phone 111

Exact same pre migraine symptoms as me! The first time it happened to me I was terrified! How are you now OP? I find the visuals/sensory slowly starts to dissipate and the headache starts to creep in. Get well soon!

princessconsuelabananahammock91 · 26/04/2023 03:02

I had a migraine come on once whilst driving going along a dual carriageway.
First flashing lights, then tunnel vision (which was terrify whilst driving) then blinding pain around my right eye.

It was the fastest an attack had ever progressed for me and I thought for sure I was going to crash before I could pull over.
I honestly could only just see the car in front of me within less than 2 mins of the aura starting, I couldn't see the barrier to my left on the cars to my right.

Thankfully I was able to pull over before causing absolute carnage.
I was too scared to get back behind the wheel for weeks after that happened.
I'm fortunate in some ways that I usually only get a migraine 1/2 times a year.

I really do feel for people who suffer from chronic and frequent migraines.

eyz · 26/04/2023 03:04

A relative of mine saw purple patches when they had a bleed in the eye from local high blood pressure, they said it was important to be seen straight away. I'd call 111 for proper advice.

reddragon7 · 26/04/2023 03:10

Hi OP, how are you feeling now? I hope you went to the emergency department. It could be an ocular migraine, or indicate a detached retina, or macular problems. It is very urgent you get seen asap, especially with how suddenly it came on, and how severe the symptoms are. Please update us. Hope you get seen to soon.

Treefy · 26/04/2023 03:30

Happened to me, was a vitreous detachment which can be harmless but could be caused by detached retina that risks sight loss. Definitely needs checking to rule this out .

JudyGemstone · 26/04/2023 03:38

I get ocular migraines like this, have had them 3-4 times. I never get pain with them. I found if I put a heat pad on my eyes they go away quicker.

hope you’re ok, was also super freaked out the first time it happened!

NewspaperTaxis · 26/04/2023 03:58

Ihavehadenoughalready · 26/04/2023 01:50

It could be a detached retina, too. Prompt attention from emergency eye doctor may be warranted. Especially if this is a completely new symptom. If it's a detached retina you should be seen right away.

What I was wondering too. Get it checked pronto, taxi to Specsavers or phone them first might help too, they will know if the local hospital has the person who can look at it properly.
A Specsaver examiner told me of a woman who had a detached retina on holiday and kept quite to not ruin the family holiday, wound up blind in that eye because she didn't act promptly.

a1poshpaws · 26/04/2023 04:07

I had this a few times 4 years ago, just in one eye at a time, and the eye went totally blind. Turned out to be something to do with my heart - I got a phone call telling me to get to hospital right now to have a monitor fitted for a week, after which I had a pacemaker inserted. So don't just assume it's migraine - get checked.

Almostparadise · 26/04/2023 04:08

I really hope you have gone to get this checked OP, good luck

user1492757084 · 26/04/2023 04:18

Your eye is very important so I would call 111.
It sounds like a migraine - I have had one a bit like this but you need to rule out other causes like mini stroke, inner eye problems with retina, any bleeding etc.
Does 111 want you to call an ambulance or go to your doctor?

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 26/04/2023 04:24

Same symptoms, detached retina requiring surgery. Don’t leave it too long to see a doctor.

RebeccaCloud9 · 26/04/2023 04:27

Has anyone tried calling 111 recently? The 2 times I've needed to, the first they didn't even connect and by the 12th minute we gave up and called 999. When I called most recently, I was given no advice but told to wait for a call back within 6 hours and to NOT go and get seen by a dr. Luckily we ignored that, went to a walk in centre and I was admitted straight to hospital. They finally rang back 10 hours later, in the middle of the night, by which time I'd had multiple tests, seen a surgical team and was asleep in the hospital bed!

Fraaahnces · 26/04/2023 04:30

There are quite a few things this could be and you need to see a doctor for a diagnosis. Some can be serious and some less so, but maybe indicating more serious illness. I would go to A&E to be safe.

LittleDitto · 26/04/2023 05:00

Definitely see a doctor and an optician to rule anything else out.

But I’m another member of the ocular migraine club! They aren’t fun. I totally freaked out the first time I had one, and it was not long after I had my DS1. I reckon I can link it to hormones although caffeine could also be a trigger.

I usually get them about once or twice a year now but I can go for a long time without.

hope you’ll be ok when you wake up OP! At least there’s usually no pain associated with them, which can be so debilitating for people who suffer from those kind.

Sunnysunbun · 26/04/2023 05:19

Migraine. I get this. It’s like looking through lace. Sometimes to add to the fun my face goes numb on one side. I take two paracetamol, drink a large glass of water and close my eyes until it’s gone. Sleep if you can.

DeflatedAgain · 26/04/2023 05:21

Aura migraine OP.

I often get them. If you sense you're getting one again (you can tell as you can't focus on one particular thing), take paracetamol asap and have a very cold drink (large of possible) it'll sort you right out.

You will find a stonking headache will come on after.

Soozikinzii · 26/04/2023 05:24

Itcould be an occular migraine? I've had those they aren't very nice and a bit weird but they only last about 2 hours .

OlympicProcrastinator · 26/04/2023 05:56

Flowerpower6 · 26/04/2023 01:38

bloody hell I hadn’t realised this could be a migraine it’s absolutely horrible it’s also only to the right hand side it’s like someone has drawn a line down my vision everything on one side is fine everything on the other is moving and swirly and had coloured splodges

This is identical to my aura migraines. I get them without pain and have done so my entire life. Because there was no pain, I wasn’t aware they were migraines and took the combined pill for years. Migraines are a contra indication to taking it due to increased risk of blood clots.

I was in my mid twenties before I was told these are migraines. Don’t panic OP. A sleep in the dark usually sorts it out.

confusedlots · 26/04/2023 06:05

Could you be pregnant? Or perimenopausal? I had ocular migraines when I was pregnant, have never experienced them at any other time. Apparently it was hormonal. It happened when I was at work and I couldn't read the words on the computer screen. It did pass after about half an hour. How are you now?

GG1986 · 26/04/2023 06:07

Sounds like migraine with aura. I had one for the first time recently and had to call an ambulance as thought I was having a stroke, my left side of face went numb and tingly also and I couldn't speak properly. Paramedics thought it was a possible TIA and I had to have tests to rule it out so it might be an idea to get checked over if this is the first time it's happened x
