School fees have risen by 19% in the space of 12 months

1000 replies

Findingfactsaboutfees · 25/04/2023 22:01

AIBU to think this is outrageous ?! Fees are exorbitant anyhow and in the last 12 months we have had an increase of 19% by way of 2 increases in a 12 month period. Fees per year for the senior school are £16690 per year and do not include state of the art facilities as other local schools do. The junior school fees aren't much less either! This is a school in the north of England. If you are paying for education, where are you based and how much do you pay? I wonder whether it is comparable.

Private education will only be for the ultra-rich if fees continue to rise at the rate that they are. It is unsustainable for most working professionals who are comfortable but not ultra-wealthy! Parents locally have tried to take their children out but can't as there are no state school places to be had within a 12 mile radius. The only other option is home schooling which isn't possible when the parents are working full time. We're not yet at the point where we are thinking of taking our child out of school but hearing the plight of those who are in the process of trying to is worrying. I've always been a labour voter but if they do go ahead with the introduction of VAT, I fear it's going to get even worse.

@SoShallINever , you said

The ones near me have a surprising number of children who's parents are drug dealers or loan sharks.

That’s interesting. At my local boarding school parents have to provide proof of how they were able to pay the fees, specifically that it was not “the profits from the proceeds of crime” or something similar.

I hadn’t realised all private schools didn’t do that.

My exhusband was an accountant. He is currently in prison for fraud of £1 million . He would have had no qualms about providing a client with appropriate paperwork that dealt with everything 'legally' and tidily. If you are sufficiently well off from your drug dealing, loan sharking etc to have the big house, the cars, children at private school you will absolutely have an accountant who can make everything look 'clean'.

What are you expecting to get from this post OP?

Most people are too busy just trying to keep their heads above water to give you sympathy for having to pay more for private schooling.

@TheThinkingGoblin "Too many people in the UK seem to think that levelling down the education sector will magically make society better."

I have never met anyone, ever, who thinks this!

I've never met a Cistercian monk but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Dobby123456 · 26/04/2023 08:41

Our school's fees have gone up by something like 15% as well. Rising energy bills and cost of living are hitting schools too.

ShimmeringShirts · 26/04/2023 08:41

Aww diddums.

I agree. It’s a ‘read the room’ type situation. There must be Facebook groups or other forums for private school parents yet you use a forum where people are panicking about affording food or their rent 😕

Yes you’re ‘entitled’ to choose private schooling and yes you’re ‘entitled’ to have a moan about a rise in fees that you can allegedly comfortably afford but it shouldn’t be surprising you’re not getting much sympathy here, nor should it be surprising that buying your child an unfair advantage rubs people up the wrong way. We all love our children, having someone whip out their tiny violin that the luxuries they can buy for them are getting more expensive when others are worrying about just keeping their kids housed is going to go down like a lead balloon.

No one has to click on the thread though, OP has clearly titled it appropriately. Since when were people only allowed to post if they're on the breadline? Everyone is affected by inflation and the higher cost of living, why shouldn't people have a space to talk about that and get advice without people hopping on to berate them?

Plumbear2 · 26/04/2023 08:48

State schools will not keep places free just in case private costs go up and kids need to move 🤣 and it's not unique for when private kids need to move. Kids in state very often will not get a place if they move location, so many kids will have to attend a school 12 miles away. You need to get real if you expect state to just jump in and offer you a local school, people are still on the waiting from year 7 and my kid is now in year 10. My heart has no sympathy for you

Of course people can post if they are not on the breadline. And other people can post in response, giving their point of view.

sqirrelfriends · 26/04/2023 08:51

It’s likely to only going to get worse, I’ve been warned that if schools do lose their charitable status under labour then costs could go up by a third.

The issue as you’ve noticed is that state schools simply don’t have the capacity right now.

Mine isn’t in private right now but if the educational system doesn’t make changes before he’s out of EYFS then I will do what I can to get him decent schooling with good pastoral care. I don’t see how that’s unfair, what’s unfair is that some areas have nothing but poorly performing state schools.

Private schooling is a luxury. You can’t afford it. Get over it. Most of the Uk population can’t afford to send their children to private school.

You don’t get to dictate that people earning over a certain income, or with dc in private school shouldn’t discuss their finances on mumsnet! Can’t believe you think OP should be in a FB forum instead of here! Bit of a cheek!

If Labour get in then they will probably introduce a fairer tax system that will generate better funding for state schools

nidgey · 26/04/2023 08:54

Findingfactsaboutfees · 25/04/2023 22:16

There's a whole cohort of people who aren't ultra-rich but rely on private schooling to be able to provide their children with the additional support that they can't for whatever reason. I know for us, we started with a private education as I was studying and felt guilty for spending time away from my child. Knowing the school had a ratio of 1:2 in the nursery and a maximum of 8 children in total made me feel less guilty about it. The fees were comparable to a typical nursery. After this we thought it was worthwhile and moved to a school with better facilities than the first. Not the best in the region but a traditional school with a good reputation. The school has a large proportion of children of hospital doctors and nurses - I'd say they are middle income and make sacrifices to invest in their children's education. They work long hours so likely can't support with education in the way they would if they were at home with the children or worked ordinary office hours.

how is salving your guilt 'additional support'? Just spend some of the money on additional support if necessary. Sorry but nobody cares, and why should they?

Itakecreaminmycoffee · 26/04/2023 08:55

There's always so much bitterness on private school threads. It reeks of it.

You need to get real if you expect state to just jump in and offer you a local school, people are still on the waiting from year 7

Ive just given up my ds's year 7 state school place to send him to private which will free up the place for another child - probably one who isn't in catchment. Aren't I nice?

Im always a bit shocked at the prices some people pay for private education. We're in the north west, dc's attend the two top schools (highly academic, excellent facilities) not just in the area but in the country (Regularly in the Times Top schools list) and we pay around £14kp.a.

Cos they’ve been able to do that before?

labour don’t have some magic wand on how to run this country, if only!

There is a reason why the Tory party is the most voted for and successful party of all time! Cos people like the shit show they create and enjoy the division of wealth.

Private schools claiming charity status is a corrupt racket that you should be ashamed of supporting

Of course they can post what they want, but it adds no value and then you do have people going on about reading the room. It's pathetic.
