I am on the three network, pay as you go.
The other day I received a letter from them confirming I had set up a direct debit. I hadn't done this and the bank account number and sort code were not mine anyway, although my name and address was correct.
Today, I get another letter saying that there was an outstanding balance on my account and again, the sort code and account number same as first letter but all in my name. Checked my online account and it confirms that I am on a PAYG and that I have not set up any direct debits with them.
Went onto live chat and they seemed really confused and said a big investigation will now be taking place as they cannot work out what has happened.
Aibu to be really scared even though I have done nothing wrong ?

I assume the letter wasn't actually from them, but from a fraudster trying to get your details?

Lonelycrab · 25/04/2023 13:40

Not exactly the same as you but I had something fishy from 3 yesterday arrive in my post. My adress, someone else’s name, one that I don’t recognise as a previous owner/tenant.

Was a confirmation of a new contract so someone clearly trying it on. Phoned them and explained, highlighting to them this looks like potential fraud.

Maybe something dodgy going on with 3. Idk. But I’m glad I opened it.

Really @Lonelycrab that's interesting...
Just freaked me out a bit. I definitely only have my PAYG account as checked it all. No reason for me to have any charges or anything like that. That's the reason I have PAYG.

Bumping for evening crowd. Although they said they would investigate, I'm still worried more letters will come and that the threats will continue. Its very worrying.

scam

PinkRiceKrispies · 25/04/2023 18:16

I don't think so as the letters are all official from Three.

Try to imagine it's an email, you'd block it. Keep returning to sender. It's just a scam.

PinkRiceKrispies · 25/04/2023 18:19

I'm worried as they said they can get bailiffs involved if not paid and also, that they can shut my account down. When I spoke to the guy on the chat he didn't say it sounded like a scam. None of it makes any sense.

It’s a scam just report it, never phone any phone numbers on any suspect letters either…and don’t worry that’s how scams work by fear or confusion
