For being annoyed I was asked to stand on a bus because of dog allergies?

I went to visit a friend in London today and I took my dog. It's worth noting she is a mini poodle, and hypoallergenic, and well behaved. You can barely even tell she's there. I got on the bus as part of my journey. It was the middle of the day so there were a few empty seats (but not loads).

I got on and sat down, and the woman a few rows behind me said 'can you move , I have a dog allergy'. I apologised and moved a few rows forwards, the furthest forwards I could go and still get a seat.

She then shouted forwards 'not far enough, you're going have to stand at the front'.

I was confused, but did it. I spent the rest of the 35 minute journey standing right at the front of the bus while the woman was 3/4 of the way along, sitting.

I did what she said for the journey, but when I got off I felt annoyed and I'm not sure if I'm justified.

And you come across as selfish and entitled for an allergy that is your issue to manage.

I don’t have an allergy….

But she wouldn’t have to manage if people didn’t choose to have dogs - pets aren’t essential

You don't choose an allergy but you do choose to have a dog. Clearly your choosing trumps those who don't choose to have certain things.

My pet is my family. She has been essential to my mental health and well being.
She is essential to me.

Yes, I chose to have a dog as a big 'fuck you' to dog allergic people.

That's nice and I'm glad the dog you chose to have was warm whilst the allergy I chose not to have meant I was cold.

This place is batshit sometimes.

FFS I hate when people hijack threads.

the op asked about HER situation; why has this turned into a debate about dogs in restaurants?

if you want to argue about it then start your own thread. Typical CF

I don’t get why people can’t give their opinion on here without it turning into a debate. The true definition of keyboard warriors 🙄

Not for the first time, I have read an opening post, and mentally composed a considered and balanced response, only to discover (just before posting said reply), we’re already 16 pages in and it’s all gone fucking nuts. So I didn’t bother.

Take it up with the bus companies and cafes etc, not the dog owners if you’re not happy. People are allowed to have dogs and allowed to take them to dog friendly places, so they will.

DiscoBeat · 25/04/2023 00:25

YABU for taking a dog on a bus 🙄
Dogs are allowed on buses and perhaps the PP doesn't drive. 🙄

I agree.

I’d like to hear more about the self righteous passenger “barking” orders at the OP. It would be interesting to learn more context.

Ramunea · 25/04/2023 00:25

I personally don’t see why dogs need to be at restaurants where people eat.

unless you dog is having a 5 course meal with you at the table; keep it at home and be considerate.

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl
Sorry to disappoint.
Business are starting to see the value of creating dog-friendly venues.
Happy owners are more likely to frequent those establishments, therefore increasing profits. Can't wait for more dog friendly venues just to see people like you lose their heads! 😂
Love my furbabies as much as you love your feral human ones!

I think you've got the wrong site, this isn't Dogsnet!

Don't be so melodramatic. I seriously doubt our paths have crossed in warmspaces in real life.
If you have avoided an allergic reaction in a warmspace, then don't blame me for your hypothetical one.

Kay286 · 25/04/2023 00:26

@Alloveragain3 so why couldn’t the person with the allergy have moved back ? Why is it all about you need to accommodate me, instead of I’ll do something to help myself !

Id be a lot more inclined to accommodate people that have manners too…. There’s a way of doing things.

justgettingthroughtheday · 25/04/2023 00:27

@Fourteenhouses if you ever dared try to suggest someone with a service dog not be served in my business you would be promptly shown the door and banned for life!
Your Sons allergies and needs do not trump other peoples! I'm sorry if you don't like it but they don't. He is not the centre of the universe and whether or not you had arrived first would be irrelevant.
Oh and before you start your ban would cover you only as it would be about your behaviour. Your son would be welcome!

Ok. OP should not have taken her dog out and about. Dogs should be limited to their owner's homes. They definitely should not be on public transport. No one should be inflicting their dogs (or crocodiles, or parrots, or tarantulas) on the rest of us.

I agree with you but some families take their dog on holiday and it's not possible to leave the dog at the accommodation.

Ramunea · 25/04/2023 00:28

It’s so annoying isn’t it. I think people like the attention and feeling superior when they debate on here and it’s so childish. Unless they are actually contributing a solution to the problem then better to start their own thread and keep it moving.

SquareRootOfAllEvil · 25/04/2023 00:28

I do think there’s an interesting discussion to be had somewhere about what happens when different needs conflict.

It’s definitely happened to me on a train in the past (not anything to do with dogs, though!), but luckily there was a fairly easy accommodation and everyone was willing to adapt. That won’t always be possible, though.

HamptonCaught · 25/04/2023 00:29

anywayhereswonderwall · 24/04/2023 23:36

I'm sorry you have to deal with this. Sounds awful and tbh I had no idea that reactions to dog dander could be that bad, but it makes sense.

If the woman at the back of the bus had an allergy as severe as you then I understand her reaction.

Wow. I didn’t know it could be that severe.

Confirms all the more that the passenger was just trolling you OP. If she was genuinely allergic she would have rushed off the bus.

She just wanted to throw her weight around. London is chocka with these sorts. Best to ignore if there is a next time.

PickoftheMix · 25/04/2023 00:17

You can overcome phobias with therapy at the like, you can't with allergies. You can die from allergies. Maybe learn some sympathy, or at least educate yourself on allergies and how life threatening they can be.

If you can die from allergies then the sensible thing to do is to avoid everything that could cause a shock.
Going into a space which allows dogs for example, eating food with peanuts etc.
Its up to you to take responsibility for managing your allergy, it is not up to others to do it for you.
Dont go into potentially hazardous spaces that allow dogs find somewhere else.
Libraries for example. Take the time to do the research, you’re the one with the allergy, you have to take care of yourself.
