The overuse of the word "gifted"

iwantavuvezela · 24/04/2023 12:50

I have noticed on a couple of forums I frequent (including mumsnet) the overuse of the word gifted. "I gifted myself some perfume". (erm, no, you bought some perfume for yourself to use. "I gifted my friend my pram". (you gave your pram) There are some times the word gifted can stand - but is this a new trend that has crept in.....
Okay its Monday, I'm feeling curmudgeonly after reading this term used once again on another forum
AIBU?

Do I stand alone!

I absolutely hate "gifted"

It's dictionary definition should be :

To offload tat onto someone else and reframe it as an act of largesse

Verbing is a nasty habit we've picked up from our American cousins. It seems that it is often used to replace verbs that are perfectly fine such as "gifted" instead of "given" or "dialoguing" instead of "discussing".

Yes !

I heard a UK YouTuber say it's "addicting" instead of addictive recently

Yellowdays · 24/04/2023 16:35

@DemonicCaveMaggot interesting. Thank you.

TrickyBiscuits · 24/04/2023 16:36

Agree with everything here 😬

I’d like to add ‘impactful’ as in ‘we need to make sure the upcoming changes are impactful’ rather than ‘changes which have an impact’ (which is a bit daft in itself but still).

Also common in my sector: ‘speak in to’ instead of giving your fucking opinion on something. Urgh.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 24/04/2023 13:42

Also 'reached out' instead of contacted. You are not one of the Four Tops, knock it off.

Best post of the day!😂

iwantavuvezela · 24/04/2023 22:20

The only other word that comes close to how I feel about the use of gifting is when Kate is photographed in the the press, and of course "we" have to know who the designer is, and if she rewears an outfit and this is referred to as "recycling". (you know thirty Kate recycles her £2000 jacket which she has worn twice.) No, this is not recycling, this is what we do every day of our lives, re-wear the clothes that are hanging in our wardrobes.

Okay that felt good to get all that off my chest!

I love it. You're taken by surprise for a sec- is that a word - and then you realise you understood perfectly what they said and there is no ambiguity. It's cool and fresh and I love a bit of newness in our language/s. Haha.

I've just learned what 'curmudgeonly' means- that one I needed to look up.

Pseudonamed · 24/04/2023 23:34

Oh I have found my people!!!!!

I thought this thread was going to be about precious 'gifted' kids who essentially are just little walking fucks but no, it is so much more. SO much more.

One of mine gets corrected every time he says this. Very annoying. I hate Americanisms in this house. Three teens so it is rampant.

MadisonAvenue · 25/04/2023 01:14

Pretty much everything mentioned previously, plus ‘journey’. Everything is a fucking journey. It isn’t, unless it’s in vehicle of some kind.

I even saw someone talk about their crochet journey once.
What they meant was that they’d learnt how to crochet.

EveryWitchWaybutLoose · 25/04/2023 01:50

YANBU. IT's like the overuse of "yourself."

It's less well-educated people trying to sound posh.

Casilero · 25/04/2023 01:54

I agree with you.

Please can we also consign incorrect use of "myself" and "yourself" to the bin? I blame The Apprentice for this. And estate agents

Casilero · 25/04/2023 01:55

Yes!!!

WandaWonder · 25/04/2023 01:56

Obviously

Used when there is no way it's obvious, not seen it on a forum just hear it all the time

FofD · 24/04/2023 16:53

Oh God I hate "reached out" so much

Also "learnings".

Road map

Art of the possible

And Bible (unless talking about ACTUAL Bible- you know the one that GOD wrote - not you Dave in compliance)

Pocodaku · 25/04/2023 02:58

You are not alone! Too many things to list, but sentences like the following currently raise my BP: “I mean… I’m not bias, but they shouldn’t of casted him! I literally died.”

LemonTreeSkies · 25/04/2023 03:24

Gifting just sounds too much like fisting. I don’t know how my brain made that connection, but here we are.
Uptick. No, increase.

katscamel · 25/04/2023 04:45

Definitely all of these as well as....
'On sale'..... as in this top was on sale... it was £50, I got it for 2.50. Of course it's bloody on sale, you wouldn't be able to buy it otherwise.

Poop......wtf!! What's wrong with a good old fashioned poo?

I know language is constantly evolving and am not moaning about that it's the increasing usage of Americanisms.....grrrrrr

THisbackwithavengeance · 25/04/2023 05:00

ShelleyPercy · 24/04/2023 14:55

for me its "unboxed", as in, going to unbox my amazon packages!!

You mean you are opening some parcels?!

This is my particular bugbear.

I bought my DD some cosmetics and bits and pieces the other day. She promptly went to "unbox" them and videoed said unboxing for the benefit of her friends presumably all agog on the other end of Snapchat or Insta or whatever SM platform they are using these days.

I feel I'm in a parallel universe some days.

I

Iloveabaconbutty · 25/04/2023 05:15

"Pre-loved". "Pre-order".
What kind of strangulation of the English language is this?!

TheDogthatDug · 25/04/2023 05:58

Normalcy - AAGH! Agree about gifted and all the others mentioned

PinkButtercups · 25/04/2023 06:25

Probably because the influencers always say it! #gifted my £2,000 twin pram because I couldn't possibly afford it myself.

Makes me wonder if these companies 'gift' baby banks prams or is it just well off celebrities 🤔.

AmytheDancingBrick · 25/04/2023 06:49

I agree with you all, although ‘gifted’ is at the top of my list.

malificent7 · 25/04/2023 07:06

"Sourced" drives me nuts.

"I sourced some earrings from etsy!!!"
Agggggrrrrrr!

Also colour way. Why not just colour?! As in, 'these shoes are available in 4 colour ways'.
