The overuse of the word "gifted"

iwantavuvezela · 24/04/2023 12:50

I have noticed on a couple of forums I frequent (including mumsnet) the overuse of the word gifted. "I gifted myself some perfume". (erm, no, you bought some perfume for yourself to use. "I gifted my friend my pram". (you gave your pram) There are some times the word gifted can stand - but is this a new trend that has crept in.....
Okay its Monday, I'm feeling curmudgeonly after reading this term used once again on another forum
AIBU?

Do I stand alone!

ahhhhh "gifted" the (free) gift that keeps on giving ......

"blessed" does make me wince as well.

for me its "unboxed", as in, going to unbox my amazon packages!!

You mean you are opening some parcels?!

WTFJanice · 24/04/2023 14:56

'Curated' is the other one that drives me mad. No, Amanda, you didn't 'curate' your bloody ear, you put in two pairs of earrings at the same time'.

And on the same sort of iffy topic, Dear Shops, please stop inviting me to

WTFJanice · 24/04/2023 14:56

'shop the sale'. It's just shopping. Still.

You don't OP, I agree with you.

C1N1C · 24/04/2023 15:02

I see a lot in here "my child is gifted"... said every parent ever.

mackthepony · 24/04/2023 15:03

I hate it too

chocolatehoovering · 24/04/2023 15:24

I absolutely hate it. I just saw a thread entitled "If you gifted money to your grandchildren". I've not opened it because the temptation to write "It's fucking GAVE not FUCKING GIFTED" was too great.
There was a thread a while back, unfortunately can't remember what it was about, but some poster went into a long explanation about why gifted was correct and not gave. I can't remember the explanation - some kind of bullshit about what the gift was and why you would say you gifted your brother money instead of you gave your brother money. There's some difference... apparently.
Load of bullshit.

Going away to calm down now and treat myself to a cup of tea and gift myself a biscuit. I deserve it.

chocolatehoovering · 24/04/2023 15:25

Cross-posted with the OP about that fucking gifted money to the grandchildren thread.

TheSingingBean · 24/04/2023 15:44

Gifted
Curated
Reached out

NO. JUST NO.

WTFJanice · 24/04/2023 15:49

Also 'call out'.

Just say, accused. Or challenged. Or confronted.

MothershipG · 24/04/2023 15:51

'Gifted' irritates me out of all proportion to the offence & I don't know why???!!! It makes my teeth itch, it rubs me up the wrong way! It's like finger nails on a chalkboard!!

I think I need to take a chill pill, anyone got one? 😆

Anonymouseposter · 24/04/2023 15:53

It’s pompous. They GAVE your child £50, not gifted them. Agree re the other examples of pompous language too. Also ‘a red lip’ ‘a fitted jean’ ‘a white trainer’ . Haven’t people got two lips, legs and feet?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 24/04/2023 16:05

When did customers become 'guests' too? Probably because businesses hope people are stupid enough to think that 'guests' shouldn't complain to their 'hosts' about being overcharged for a five pack of knickers.

Didtheythough · 24/04/2023 16:09

Yes, it's terrible I agree of course but is it as bad as "aww they all did amazing didn't they" no, no they didn't, they did 'AmazingLY' aaaarrrghhhhh!!!

Yellowdays · 24/04/2023 16:15

Someone this morning wrote that someone was "not read into" a document or policy. Wtf? Meaning they weren't given it to read, or what? And anyway, you can't get "read into" anything!

Sennedd · 24/04/2023 16:18

“We are pregnant” annoys me. What? Both of you?

Didtheythough · 24/04/2023 16:18

Just noticed someone up thread mentioned 'gotten' this is a truely heinous Americanism, my 11yr old occasionally says it, makes no sense, it's longer than the correct word it replaces.

BillyNoM8s · 24/04/2023 16:20

My hate word of the moment is chill.

When did it become acceptable to describe someone or something as "chill".

"Oh, she's so chill." Gives me the absolute rage.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 24/04/2023 16:20

Yellowdays I have only seen 'read into' on shows like NCIS where they are talking about people getting access to a top secret document where someone from another department comes over and reads the relevant sections to them, I think?

I haven't seen the thread in question so I suppose it is possible the person was talking about MI5 or equivalent, but it's more likely to be Mavis from customer service who hasn't seen the new dress code for shoes at her job and got written up for wearing sandals.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 24/04/2023 16:22

Life 'hacks'.

Tips, they mean tips. My favourite being 'hack a Summer outfit by pairing a cute top with a cute pair of jeans'. Ma'am if I could identify what made something 'cute' I wouldn't need to read the fashion advice column and while we are about it hack off.

Iloveabaconbutty · 24/04/2023 16:25

Why do so many people being interviewed on the radio, etc feel they need to begin their reply to a question with, "So,...."?

I don't know why, but it gets my goat!

Roozkitty · 24/04/2023 16:26

"Action this" annoys me so much. No, I'll just do it.

Also 'reached out' instead of contacted. You are not one of the Four Tops, knock it off.

Lol
