Bar licensed person

not AIBU, but couldn't find a suitable section.

I've hired a village hall, and I need a licensed person to supervise the bar.
The hall people have recommended an events company at £150 for bar staff.
What do people do in this situation?
Do I have to book an events company??

When I was involved with the PTA at Primary school we used to apply for a temporary license which covered the serving and selling of alcohol. There was a fee - can't remember how much but not a lot or it wouldn't have been worth our while. Maybe something to check out.

You just need a TENS licence from your local council - I think it's £21 or thereabouts. You need to fill in a simple form at least two weeks before the event, and it allows the sale of alcohol for an event.

You will need someone who holds a personal alcohol licence (I have one) to run the bar. If any of your friends or family are bar/restaurant managers, own or supervise in an off licence they are likely to have one and may be happy to help out.

It's £21 for the licence, anyone over 18 can apply (max 4 per year)

You only need this if you are planning to charge people for drinks.

Thank you. I'm waiting back for a reply from the hall.
So, I got myself confused trying to google it.
So I apply through the council for a TENS license, then do I man the bar myself?
It's for an 18th birthday, so I thought if I charged for drinks they might not drink too much! Also I know exactly who is and isn't 18.

it depends if the village hall has a licence to sell alcohol or not? If it does. You then need an individual with a personal licence to run the bar. You have to do a course to get this. I’d either have free alcohol or hire a bar. Some won’t charge if you spend a certain amount

Lcb123 · 24/04/2023 15:41

If the hall doesn’t have its own licence. You’d need to get a temporary event notice as well.

@Lcb123 the website says the hall has a "fully licensed bar".
I hope they get back to me this evening. I appreciate they'll be volunteers though so may be busy.
