I'm probably being dramatic but I'm a bit worried.

I know this will seem dramatic but I can get quite worried when it comes to health stuff.
Today I was eating and felt some food go what felt like 'down the wrong hole'.
It felt like it was to the right of my neck and was stuck there.
I've had discomfort in my chest since.
I've googled it and it's saying stuff about food going down the trachea and causing pneumonia and now I'm worried!!!

It's 5 hours later and it sort of feels like it's near my throat but I can't cough anything up. Is this just nothing and I'm being worried and over anxious?

If it went down the wrong hole you'd suffocate surely?

orangeisalemon · 23/04/2023 22:18

OP I know what it’s like to worry, bless you it can be debilitating. I can guarantee you you will be fine. You would’ve coughed and coughed if there was an obstruction.

Wolfiefan · 23/04/2023 22:20

You need to seek help with the health anxiety. And quit googling.

Cherryblossoms85 · 23/04/2023 22:22

Probably slightly irritated your oesophagus. Aspiration is a risk when you're unconscious, if it happened when you were conscious you'd be choking and coughing it up immediately.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 23/04/2023 22:27

If it continues into tomorrow please get it checked, food can get lodged in the oesophagus and also pass into the bronchi although this is much rarer

Im retired now but used to work in operating theatres and have on more than one occasion been involved with removal of lodged foreign bodies from both including a piece of pork as big as your thumb, false teeth, pen lids from lungs etc

You know some food "going down the wrong hole" means you've breathed it in right? Which you absolutely would know about.

Babsexxx · 24/04/2023 05:18

You have health anxiety really unfortunate you really would know about it if it went down the wrong hole, I used to get awful sensations of things being stuck in my throat when I suffered severe anxiety and lived off wotsits and yoghurts (really bad) no anxiety now but I can definitely sympathise.

Is there anything making you extra anxious currently op?

There are only two holes. One is your oesophagus (for food) and the other is your trachea (for air). If you had inhaled food, you would have been coughing and spluttering for a time. I do it quite regularly because my epiglottis, a flap that protects your trachea during swallowing, is a bit sluggish.

When you swallow, your epiglottis (should) snap over the top of the your trachea. That stops food or liquid from going down the wrong hole.

I think it sounds like you have Globus which is a feeling that something is stuck in your throat. It happens when there is a malco-ordination of the muscles when you swallow. The feeling can last quite a while.

Thank you for your replies. I've been trying to reply since last night but it wouldn't let me, so I've deleted and reinstalled the app. So hopefully this works.

@Tomnooktoldmeto
Gosh teeth and pens?!
I am still breathing fine. I am coughing a bit every now and then. It feels like it stuck to the right. So not directly in my throat but to the right slightly?

Those who have said about health anxiety etc. I do get quite anxious around health. Which has been more so since having a baby 9 months ago. And when I was pregnant I was very anxious for various reasons.
