I'm about to cry about my teeth

joltser · 23/04/2023 19:39

I'm early 20s. Bought professional whitening gel because I was seriously insecure about my yellow teeth. This hasn't seemed to work too much.

Further research and inspection and all the edges of my teeth are translucent - seeming to mean no enamel? Which would mean that whitening products won't work and the only option for a better colour on them is bonding/veneers.

I'm just devastated. I have an NHS dentist but they haven't had anyone available for a year. There's no way I can afford private.
All I want is slightly whiter teeth that aren't destined to just get worse. I'm so insecure about the yellowness of them.

Any other personal experiences? Or advice? I've never felt my confidence so low about something.

@DimplesToadfoot I've honestly never wore it in my life, don't like the feel of it, so using it to make them look more white isn't really an option either Grin

Your teeth are perfectly normal. What's going on in your life that's made you focus on them?

joltser · 23/04/2023 20:46

@Eyesopenwideawake no idea. I've always been insecure that they were yellow. Then about 2 weeks ago I caught a glimpse of them in the mirror at work, thought they looked horribly yellow and haven't been able to think about anything else since!

Omg your teeth are fine. Stop messing with them and relax!

ZuckerwatterMaus · 23/04/2023 20:49

I had to have a veneer . They made it look translucent at the edge so that it looks natural . Translucent T the edges is totally normal .

orangeisalemon · 23/04/2023 20:52

They look normal! Arm and hammer whitening toothpaste is good, though

Cerealkillerontheloose · 23/04/2023 20:55

ive had this issue for years sadly the only real whitening products that work are the dentist whitening

I had brightsmile some 20 years ago that was £600 and the best ive ever used.

the toothpastes etc dont work sadly they really dont

veneers you'd be talking £20,000 and no NHS dentist would do it so would be private

composite bonding is roughly £300 a tooth

MaidOfSteel · 23/04/2023 20:57

Your teeth look perfectly fine to me, OP. Nowadays, the only time I notice people's teeth is when they are that unnaturally American white. Healthy, cared for teeth are much more important.

Crest 3D White Professional Effects Whitestrips Teeth Whitening Strips Kit, 40 Strips (20 Count Pack) https://a.co/d/4xMallo

Mine are translucent too.

UK whitening strips don't work because the EU banned the ingredients that make them effective.

These are legit ones from the US and they WORK.
I would say one box got my teeth a solid 5 shades whiter and now I just do one strip a month to keep on top of them.

I got my teeth professionally whitened at a dentist 6 years ago and it didn't work as well as these

thats not true

Theyre banned because we have a legal level of Bleach allowed in things and these have too higher level....

starfishmummy · 23/04/2023 21:07

They look perfectly fine. Yellowish us a natural colour for teeth for some people and tbh looks better than dazzling white.

Thehonestybox · 23/04/2023 21:08

My dentist told me that my overly translucent teeth was due to enamel loss on the back. Honestly people can't tell - only you can because you're looking at them more often and closer.

You could save up for veneers which would solve it - or just accept it.

When did you decide that they were yellow? Age 10? 15?

Lots of people (including me - my chin was my 'thing') obsess about something to do with their appearance until it becomes magnified out of all proportion. No one on this thread, and I promise no one in RL, thinks your teeth are anything other than 100% normal. Instead of looking at your own teeth, have a look - without being obvious! - at the teeth of people around you, the people at work, at work, on public transport. They are normal. As are you.

SkaneTos · 23/04/2023 21:43

OP, your teeth look fine! They look normal and fine.

I've used them with zero repercussions or lasting sensitivity. A lot of people in America use them with no issue too...

But everyone has to make choices they deem as safe for them.
The strips I have purchased here have made no difference, these did :)

catherinewales · 23/04/2023 21:52

I would see a hygienist and get an airflow treatment which will clean them and get rid of most stains then I'd whiten them after that. Airflow is a private treatment but definitely worth the money.

@cosmicfig haha this is definitely reassuring. So the translucency isn't something to worry about too much? Or is it the start of something to worry about? I don't understand it all.

I do get some sensitivity now and again but nothing that I'd consider unbearable.

Mine are exactly the same around the edges and I was worried years ago that I’d fucked up the enamel and the dentist looked at me like I was mad. They also aren’t as yellow as you think they are OP! They look like pretty normal teeth. Save up and get them whitened at the dentists. Don’t use other whitening stuff because it WILL fuck up your enamel.

FusionChefGeoff · 23/04/2023 22:02

Your teeth are completely normal - they are not overly yellow and your obsession / panic / anxiety with getting them whiter is not rational.

It's like a size 8 panicking about their love handles and seeking advice on weight loss surgery.

brokenarmabroad · 23/04/2023 22:04

OP your teeth are completely normal, in fact they are quite nice. Mine a probably slightly more yellow than yours and it wouldn't even occur to me to worry about it. They are healthy and clean and pretty straight and that's good enough for me.

I wonder if your perspective had been warped by the current and quite weird fashion for artificially white teeth.

joltser · 23/04/2023 22:15

@brokenarmabroad I definitely think it is when I think about it! Between celebrities and influencers and now even so many local people to me investing in veneers, I think I'm used to that colour being 'normal'!

This thread has been super reassuring tonight

I was really worked up over mine for a bit and my dentist said natural teeth don't generally whiten to bright bright white
This is as white as mine will go and he said the colour we see is usually veneers

I'm about to cry about my teeth

Try to remember that a lot of photos of celebrities/influencers don't even show their real teeth - they will have a filter or editing to make them brighter white. It's all fake! Your teeth are lovely.

I didn’t say they weren’t good. I was just saying the bit you said about the ingredients isn’t true

Do you buy these straight from the US Amazon site? What is delivery like and how much is postage!?

Yup!

If you click the link it will take you to the US site and you just order through there. The postage I think was about £10.

It's very easy to order from the US site because they let you know shipping and everything and there's no import tax or customs issues. It's basically just like ordering from our Amazon and it arrives in about a week.

Imo it's highly worth it because still MUCH cheaper than going to have it done at a dentist and very effective. :)

Snellytheelephant · 08/08/2023 23:39

@joltser, did you get to a dentist about this? I could have written this exact post and am currently going down the same rabbithole myself - panicked is an understatement! My teeth look pretty similar to yours and I’m similarly unable to get in to see a dentist. Did you get anywhere? Would love some tips (or preferably reassurance!) if you did Halo x
