I am fuming…

I am so infuriated with the cheekiness of the British councils and how they try to extract people’s money at every turn they can.

I have decided to leave the U.K. and move to my husbands country (Switzerland) with our baby. DH is moving shortly (within 6-9 months) waiting for a transfer. So I have now left the U.K. and starting a new job shortly, my baby is going to a nursery etc. So I have contacted the council where we live providing detailed explanation and asking to reduce the council tax to a single person occupancy (30% off). They came back to me literally saying that they do not believe the fact that I have now left and therefore will not remove my name from this address and therefore won’t reduce the council tax. I mean the AUDACITY! They just try to drag this on to extract as much money as they can from a paying resident. They even told me that if I’m not happy I can appeal. So this is ongoing. It’s like it’s not your bloody choice when people leave your council and you can’t bloody force them to say.

Another thing that recently just added to my desire to leave was the congestion charge discount. So we live in the zone so eligible to effectively not pay it since recently. BUT in order to apply for it you have to send tons of documents about me and the car. You have enough documents to bloody charge me that’s no problem but once I want to get my legitimate discount you just try to bury me under the paper load. I honestly can’t wait to get the hell out. It’s just been compounding for too long and now reached the point where I just hate being here.

Does anyone feel as frustrated with these complete morons?

Ok KillerSandy it may surprise you but the salary is higher, tax is lower, tons of tax benefits, tax of various advantages once you have kids, almost full salary paid once you lose a job for up to 2 years etc. plus you can’t compare the quality of life. So with all due respect you have no idea what you are talking about :-)

Why are you desperate for the U.K. to lower the council tax for you then? You’ve got it made.

Throwncrumbs · 21/04/2023 21:51

So you are driving around London while living in Switzerland? 😂

TheRookie · 21/04/2023 21:57

So you're happy to give evidence of where your child will spend most of their time but not happy to send evidence of your address, the one who has left and needs to prove this. Another day another fecking bonkers MN poster 😁

Heronwatcher · 21/04/2023 22:09

You sound like a classic example of someone who goes out of the way to make things difficult for themselves and then claims that things are difficult. Of course they won’t believe you’ve moved if you don’t send your address! I think you just need to grow up a bit really.

Stripycatz · 21/04/2023 22:18

Well you do sound somewhat hysterical and unreasonable, but you're not necessarily wrong. My council owe me £450 from council tax overpayment (because they refused to reduce it). They acknowledge that they owe it, and send me letters telling me to put in a claim, which I do, yet they still have it. It's been 18 months!

LinaLM · 21/04/2023 20:46

I don’t believe individuals care of course why would they? It’s more about making life more difficult. On its own this is of course a no issue but like I said there were so
many issues over the years that made me resent these people and their methods.

It's attaching two pdfs to an email 😂

What exactly are "the tax advantages and various benefits", relative to the UK. Can I join?

Tippexy · 21/04/2023 22:39

It comes across in your posts that you are not British - so - thanks for coming and enjoy Switzerland, I guess?

For my DH while he’s living here alone! Think that’s pretty obvious :-)

I’ll tell you what’s obvious. You’re in the U.K.

Stravaig · 21/04/2023 22:43

I'd be confused that you are still dealing with the council tax bill of a property that is no longer your home, in a country you have supposedly left. It's a very mixed message! Not your country, not your home, not your business. Let your husband sort out his own bill reduction. It will make more sense to the local authority.

So you’re moving from the UK to Switzerland? The only place that hates immigrants more than the UK. My word, you really had to search the world for that one…given you’re not Swiss yourself, good luck I guess 😂

Not sure if it has anything to do with my post. My father is British and my
mother is French but your casual xenophobia is charming :-)

Someone else on here posted some Daily Mail links that you may find interesting 😁

It’s a long and complex conversation and I paid a tax expert to make sure we go over it all. You may either do that or just google it as some other people suggested.

I have got to agree when I re-read my post it was a bit too charged! However I stick to my guns broadly speaking around how horrible it is dealing with this council.

Ok a few responses:
DH will be with me as much as he is allowed - it’s a specific number of days per month which is quite a lot effectively almost 3 days every week plus holidays (tax reasons). It’ll be hard and he’ll have to travel a lot but it’ll be worth it so we decided to do it.

DH is actually dealing with it now. I’m just adding value by sharing it on here I guess 😂

Ah tax reasons why don't you do it properlyz so you are critical of tax in UK but there are tax reasons why he can't move back fully.

You want your cake and eat it either go back or don't but don't complain about issues of your own making
