AIBU feeding my kid instant noodles several times a week

I had dinner with my DS and my mum saw we were eating instant noodles with chicken soup and extra vegetable I added. She shamed me about feeding my DS instant noodles, saying it was unhealthy.

It's easy for me to make and everybody likes eating it. DS has loved noodles since he was 6 months old. I cook it several times a week. But I usually make it a bit healthier with broccoli. Sometimes I add a fried egg.

AIBU by feeding my kid some instant noodles for dinner?

Depends on the noodles as others have said - to an extent...

Eating the same thing several times a week isn't going to give you the variety of nutrients you would ideally have either. Same with eating bread or pasta or white rice 5 times a week for dinner.

Lots of us do it though it's not ideal. Better to get most of your carbs from vegetables or unrefined whole grains.

NortieTortie · 21/04/2023 10:09

You're unreasonable to give it multiple times a week. Every now and then is fine.

Anyone else picturing a pot noodle or super noodles covered in soup with veg on the side. Sounds rank and I'll eat any old shit

Indeed ,I mean if you are going to.eat, then at least eat them as intended 😂

georgarina · 21/04/2023 10:16

Instant noodles are really unhealthy - would put them on the same level as crisps

reaty · 21/04/2023 10:26

My kids love the chicken instant noodles. Sometime they have it with steamed brocoli, carrots, corn on the cob on the side.

theDudesmummy · 21/04/2023 10:28

Noodles fine, instant noodles several times a week as a meal no. Like potatoes fine, crisps several times a week as a meal no.

LeFeu · 21/04/2023 10:31

If you get plain fine egg noodles you don't really need to cook them, I just bung some boiling water over them like you would a pot noodle for a few mins. Then get a bag or packet of pre prepped stir fry veg, frozen prawns, stir fry, probably not much more time than waiting for a pot noodle and much healthier.

My kids don't have eg super noodles, and I'm fairly lax about healthy food, but there is literally no nutrition in a pack of instant noodles!

Noodles are nutritionally similar to pasta surely. The issue is salt etc associated with the instant brands.

I buy the type with the sachet of flavouring and then just make up my own with vegetable stock. Then shove in some peas, sweetcorn or tinned chickpeas & add a bit of left over meat from a meal e.g roast chicken or cooked prawns or fish.

It’s a super quick leftovers meal and just as healthy as pasta.

BraveFaceScaredInside · 21/04/2023 10:41

I expect you have had a lot of grief on here for it. But ya know what? Raising kids is hard and sometimes you have to pick your battles. As long as they are fed and not hungry that's the most important thing.

Nordicrain · 21/04/2023 10:42

Depends what's in them, but unless there are loads of adatives or salt they are just a carb like anything else. And children need carbs.

Surely you can just buy the plain egg noodles though? If you're not using the flavour sachet it would be a lot cheaper.

Also come in spelt/buckwheat version too!

VincentVaguer · 21/04/2023 11:02

nothing wrong with dried noodles - millions of japanese can't be wrong!

VincentVaguer · 21/04/2023 11:03

dried noodles are really no different to pasta or white bread, as others have said.

cheekyffer · 21/04/2023 11:14

If they are from the Ramen packets they are ultra-processed, likely with monosodium glutamate in the stock.

Enriched Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Vegetable Oil (!"Contains One or More of the Following:" Canola, Cottonseed, Palm), !"Preserved by" TBHQ, Salt, Dehydrated Vegetables (Carrot, Corn, Green Peas, Garlic, Onion, Celery Stalk), !"Contains Less than 2% of:" Maltodextrin, Monosodium Glutamate, Sugar, Hydrolyzed Corn, Wheat and Soy Protein, Chicken Fat, Powdered Cooked Chicken, Spices !(Celery Seed), Yeast Extract, Dehydrated Soy Sauce (Wheat, Soybeans, Salt), Potassium Carbonate, Sodium (|"Mono, Hexameta, !"and-or" Tripoly"), Phosphate, Sodium Carbonate, Turmeric, Disodium Inosinate, Disodium Guanylate, Silicon Dioxide !(Anti-Caking Agent), Lactose, Chicken Broth, Soya Lecithin.

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 21/04/2023 11:15

I've just checked my packet of ramen noodles to check saturated fat and its 100g and its got 2g so not every packet has 14g in like the article claimed!

Rainbowsandbutterflies1990 · 21/04/2023 11:17

I'd also argue that doesnt Japan where they are a stable food, people live to be very old and r healthy , it is an American article so maybe in America where they potentially are pumped full of crap that is banned from other countries

TheMatriarchy · 21/04/2023 11:21

Its junk food, three times a week is too much.

I think that's wishful thinking on your part but of course people eat what they want!

MrsRinaDecker · 21/04/2023 11:26

We’re in a cost of living crisis… this is the food that a lot of people can afford, and also the sort of food a food bank will give out. It may not be the ideal, but fed is best.

Hyppogriff · 21/04/2023 11:27

Once a week as a treat fine but sorry current set up sounds no good am at all - ultra high processed, high salt, probably msg - basically rubbish.

Rubyupbeat · 21/04/2023 11:28

Amen, someone who talks the most perfect sense, thank you.

RB68 · 21/04/2023 11:37

Go for the plain egg noodles and make your own broth - super easy in fact pretty much as easy as instant noodles packet. We put clove garlic in while, couple of spring onion chopped, bit of grated ginger or couple of smidges ginger powder and half chick stock cube (i like knorr) and some soy sauce.

We then add julienned carrots and various veg depending on what is available

If we recently had roast chicken we might add some pre-cooked bits of chicken as well.

Of Course MN ers would make stock with said chick carcas rather than half a stock cube

RB68 · 21/04/2023 11:38

oh and the plain noodles are cheaper overall (check g and £ but the instant noodles are creeping up quickly in price

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 21/04/2023 11:40

I'm picturing OP with loads of Pot Noodles but I don't think she means that - if it's the plain egg noodles then it's not really different to rice or pasta, but everything in moderation. The dried instant noodles are a bit grim though.

SparklyBlackKitten · 21/04/2023 11:43

Such a wind up haha.
