AIBU feeding my kid instant noodles several times a week

I had dinner with my DS and my mum saw we were eating instant noodles with chicken soup and extra vegetable I added. She shamed me about feeding my DS instant noodles, saying it was unhealthy.

It's easy for me to make and everybody likes eating it. DS has loved noodles since he was 6 months old. I cook it several times a week. But I usually make it a bit healthier with broccoli. Sometimes I add a fried egg.

AIBU by feeding my kid some instant noodles for dinner?

Wow … this just shows how much society is failing young moms to be honest. You need a village, not to shame you but to educate you. You can’t know everything about everything. I doubt that OP was trying to poison her children. I wonder how many of people here know that ham (processed meat) and bacon are top tier cancerogenic food? How about all the Yankee candles that mess up with metabolism? Cleaning sprays? Perfume?

My 20mo often has instant noodles, we make them with zero salt stock instead of the flavour sachet and add mixed veg and fish or chicken, the way I see it is it's just an alternative carb to pasta, bread or potatoes

Then why not just buy a pack of plain noodles? Much cheaper, and properly made

Frankenweenie · 21/04/2023 07:17

Anyone else think this thread might be a wind up?

Hairbear2 · 21/04/2023 07:21

I assume you aren’t putting the packet of flavour in, as you are mixing with soup, so not much different to other noodles/pasta.
my ex is feeding my 9 year old super noodles (with packet of flavour) on its own, for a main meal! I’m not happy about it, but the alternative is chicken nuggets, he seems to have lost the ability to cook.

custardbear · 21/04/2023 07:31

It's quite easy to change that to a more healthy meal.
Cook chicken in water with onion, garlic, carrots and any other veg you can add, blend to a soup. Add some cooked whole meal noodles or spaghetti and serve. You don't really need to blend the soup, or you could add some veggies like broccoli or sweetcorn to the broth too for some extra more chunky veg
Honestly, it's a quick meal, especially if you have a soup kettle

instant noodles with chicken soup and extra vegetable

OP needs to explain what this really is. Soup with plain noodles & vegetables = fine (but check the salt in the soup). Pot Noodle or Super Noodles including flavour sachet = not great, even with the extra vegetables.

I assume processed packet noodles with the flavour sachet. Obviously normal noodles are fine, as Asian people are very healthy eaters. Although I also agree with PP, I think this thread is a wind-up.

londonrach · 21/04/2023 07:35

My DD loves them but she has them as a snack about once every two months... It's not good for you, too much salt and three times a week seems an awful lot.

Phos · 21/04/2023 07:41

I don't think there's too much wrong with them as long as you're not added the sachet of goodness knows what and just using them like regular noodles to serve with something else,

People in MN have a weird opinion of food and they'll often try and one up other posters. They'll try to project a perfect parenting aura and they'll make out that they weigh everything and buy gluten free every thing and free range everything blah blah blah.

The rest of us, in the real world, realise that food is food is food. It's all fuel, it all gets chewed up and mulched and sent down to a stomach of acid to dissolve it, digest it, take out what can be used and waste what can't be used.

Noodles, chips, chocolate, pizza, burgers, bananas, gluten free yaks milk from the southern side of a mountain in Chile that can only be milked on a Tuesday at 3.33pm..
It all gets mulched, swallowed, burned.

Modern instant noodles, chicken soup and vegetables... I'd eat that daily, I'm sure there's people in Japan that do and they're far healthier than most of the over dieted westerners.

Don't stress it OP.

Food is not ‘just food’, sorry. Absolute nonsense - I advise you listen or read some Tim Spector or Michael Mosely.
While I agree that instant pot noodles are bad, just instant plain noodles are fine w low salt stock and added veg etc.
Nothing wrong w a potato either - in non-cup form as a regular carb.

Aslanplustwo · 21/04/2023 07:42

Phoebo · 21/04/2023 03:51

Except OP has specifically said her DC has them regularly, multiple times a week. It's the salt content that would concern me, really bad for a young child's liver. Carbs in general are fine of course, especially if your child is a healthy weight and active

I wasn't actually refering to the OP's question - just the numerous posters who feel the need to tell us all that we should eat like them (i.e. with no joy at all, anything tasty is BAD).

It’s worked hasn’t it…

Bunnichick · 21/04/2023 07:46

Do you mean like super noodles?

CascaChan · 21/04/2023 07:47

Davestwattymissus · 20/04/2023 22:47

They're only noodles Michael

Beat me to it lol!

Cakencookieobsessed · 21/04/2023 07:53

It's fine as long as he's eating other healthy stuff as well. It's not like you're only giving him noodles and nothing else. On mumsnet of course little Hugo only eats quinoa and chia seeds for dinners. They're kidding themselves if they're trying to make out their kid's never eaten a noodle or a chicken nugget.

FurAndFeathers · 21/04/2023 03:31

You know it’s entirely possible to buy whole grain instant noodles right?

I'm more interested in what's wrong with potatoes!

Did you really not understand how a person could identify as being Chinese/Japanese?

As an example it’s like me saying when asked why I can cook both Middle Eastern and East African foods - my mother in law taught me, she had one parent from the Middle East and another one from coastal Kenya.

I suspect you knew very well what the poster meant and that you were just looking for something to pick on.

Thank you for this! The story of her parents is actually a very long and sad story, think forbidden love etc. I won’t go in to it because she’s a very private woman and it’s not my business to tell lol! But she makes a point to tell people she is of Japanese and Chinese parents.

I wasn’t always treated very well by ex’s family but ex MIL was always kind to me, she taught me tons of lovely dishes from her culture. I still make congee/jook (whatever you know it as) when the kids are poorly. It’s all they’ll eat though they prefer hers to mine 😂

Daisiesandprimroses · 21/04/2023 08:07

I don’t think it’s good to do this often no. I’m with your mother, an occassional meal of it fine, but not on the regular no. And adding a fried egg or a bit of broccoli doesn’t make it healthy

Willmafrockfit · 21/04/2023 08:07

how about couscous

CalpolDependant · 21/04/2023 08:17

I consider myself super chill on the food front. With the exception of PFB, I am a jam sandwich feeding machine. And I let them have their Easter eggs for breakfast on Easter Sunday. And I don’t sweat it when they go through the “nil but nuggets” phase. I roll with the punches. I feed them lots of fruit. I nod along politely when my friends say their kids eat broccoli for a snack.

I’m the antithesis of all MN advice. Bad mum. BAD.

And yet, even I draw the line at super noodles for a baby. 😂

For this reason, I’m tempted to say this thread is a troll.

ReadtheReviews · 21/04/2023 08:18

It's basically on the same level as a packet of crisps.

x2boys · 21/04/2023 08:20

Just discovered Naked, noodles ,they are to die for😍

nutbrownhare15 · 21/04/2023 08:23

My kids had noodles last night. They cook in about 3 minutes. I make them a peanut/satay sauce to go with it and add veg (we are vegetarian). Why would you give instant noodles to children when it's so easy to cook normal noodles?

seventwelve · 21/04/2023 08:24

I feel like this is one of those threads where an OP throws in a discussion hand grenade and then quickly departs, never to be seen again. 😂

Mirabai · 21/04/2023 08:26

I like buckwheat soba noodles and black rice noodles. These are complex carbs.

I do like a good Japanese soup with noodles, miso, mixed veg such as pak choi, seaweed, you can add chicken, prawns, egg etc.

No-one could say that’s not nutritious and it doesn’t take long to assemble.

Indeed. And then all the posters with very odd views of food gather.

I think regular noodles, white rice or potatoes several times a week is perfectly fine for young DC. Just not the instant kind.
