AIBU feeding my kid instant noodles several times a week

I had dinner with my DS and my mum saw we were eating instant noodles with chicken soup and extra vegetable I added. She shamed me about feeding my DS instant noodles, saying it was unhealthy.

It's easy for me to make and everybody likes eating it. DS has loved noodles since he was 6 months old. I cook it several times a week. But I usually make it a bit healthier with broccoli. Sometimes I add a fried egg.

AIBU by feeding my kid some instant noodles for dinner?

Those noodles are pure crap. Nutritionally pointless and really high in salt

TheExchange · 20/04/2023 22:17

Could you switch to regular noodles?

Cakeandcoffee93 · 20/04/2023 22:18

There are studies to prove the dangers of pot noodles in large amounts and a warning on the instructions.

they have been banned in some countries just fyi

MatchesinEyes23 · 20/04/2023 22:18

Just buy some spaghetti and a stir in pasta sauce, just as easy and much healthier.
Those instant noodles are just full of fat and salt (although I’m partial to the odd pack myself 😂)

EveryWitchWaybutLoose · 20/04/2023 22:18

Yes, YABU.

Far too much salt and artificial flavours and very little nutritional value.

brokenarmabroad · 20/04/2023 22:22

Instant noodles are a completely different product to egg noodles or pasta. Instant noodles actually contain a lot of fat (usually in the form of palm oil), as well as the obvious difference of msg etc in the flavouring. It's why the fuckers taste so bloody good but honestly you might as well be giving your kids crisps for dinner.

justasmalltownmum · 20/04/2023 22:26

I saw a video just the other day about how they did a study to show that pot noodles do not digest.

Mindovermatter247 · 20/04/2023 22:27

Dd10 loves instant noodles, she’s loved them since she was about 2, she didn’t have them that often and now she’s only allowed them once a week. She’s not had them for a few weeks though because her usual ones aren’t on offer.
she eats healthy the other 6 days a week so one treat like that won’t harm. As long as kids are fed, especially at the moment with COL…anything is better than nothing

baffledcoconut · 20/04/2023 22:28

It’s standard in Asian countries to
use add hot water noodles as a base. We’ve been doing it for years. Sometimes using some of the sachet, usually not. Add veg, fish, egg etc and it’s a perfectly ok meal.

GraysPapaya · 20/04/2023 22:29

Noodles aren’t that bad, my very healthy Asian friends eats ‘instant’ noodles several times a week! Not a pot noodle, granted.

horrendous over processed muck, that will interfere with their metabolism and most likely lead to obesity and diabetes. Once or twice a year, in an emergency, maybe

Wow! Calm down it's only noodles!

GloomySkies · 20/04/2023 22:34

Can't get over an earlier comparing a pot noodle.to a fucking potato. One is plucked straight from the ground, no processing, full of nutrients and fibre (with skin) and really very good for you. The other is the end result of a lab experiment.

Agreed. People are demonising potatoes these days. Soon they'll be telling us we can't drink water for some made up reason.

Davestwattymissus · 20/04/2023 22:47

They're only noodles Michael

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/04/2023 22:48

Yes, you are. 6 months old? Way too much salt.

Palava57 · 20/04/2023 22:48

I used to do this too often with peas & a fried egg as the only meal I could produce in 3 minutes if needed. I did not add the spices sachet though which is where the most salt etc is. My DC is a very healthy 30 something now… 😊

LaughingCat · 20/04/2023 22:48

If you’re going for dried ramen noodles, and adding hot water (no powder packet), that’s not necessarily bad for you. But there’s a lot of instant noodles that are utter crap, nutritionally (like pot noodles). But ramen cooked in hot water with veggies and meat/egg isn’t too bad imo.

Eranzer · 20/04/2023 22:49

Supernoodles/Pot Noodles several times a week for a little kid = no, come on now

The stir fry type noodles where you add stock and veg and shit = nay bother

WandaWonder · 20/04/2023 22:50

I used to make ds an instant noodle dish with tin tuna and peas he was (still is!) a very fussy eater but ate that

YouJustDoYou · 20/04/2023 22:52

I mean, we sometimes give ours a children's type of instant noodle (small portion, low/no salt etc) that you can't get in this country in regular shops but sometimes can in the other country cuisine shops, but with loads of added home-cooked veg, protein etc.

Sweetchillidumplings · 20/04/2023 22:52

DS has instant noodles at least 2-3 times a week. My situation is probably slightly different - he has adhd and is on meds that lower his appetite and we are currently trying to get him to gain weight, granted, and the noodles are one of his safe foods - but consultants have advised it’s really not as bad as people are making out here. You’re not alone.

CoffeeAndEnnui · 20/04/2023 22:52

@Davestwattymissus I'm delighted to see that reference appear onscreen as well as in my head!

He would probably have eaten fresh egg noodles too. Same taste, none of the added crap.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/04/2023 22:53

Sorry, but your mum is right. No one should eat that shit but it's awful that you're feeding that to a baby. It's just total rubbish. Making real, healthy food is not hard.

Oh, it's you again Nimbo.
