To think these are connected - stomach bugs / issues

Hey.

For the past 2 month or so on and off I have been suffering with indigestion and heartburn. To the point some nights I felt sick. My upper stomach (between ribs in middle) was sore to the touch.

GP prescribed omperzole but it hasn't made much difference. Scans of the area show no issues. Bloods all OK. GP basically said crack on with it and come back if it gets worse. I recently found out I'm pregnant (5 weeks) so now it's just too easy for them to put it down to pregnancy which is frustrating.

Symptoms are improving but very very slowly. Only thing that helps is small meals and taking the time to eat them but I still get some issues despite this.

The past three days my DC (5) has started with a cough and will complain after eating that her stomach (upper) is sore. Last night she was sick and today when she eats she says she felt sick again after eating. She also says her chest is "hot". I'm assuming this is a child's way of describing heartburn etc. Her stomach area looks bloated (upper) and she says is sore to touch.

Could these be related and if so is it some sort of viral bug that will eventually pass or do I need to seek GP help again?

Have they tested for H-Pylori? That can cause those symptoms and can be passed on to family members.
Easily treated with antibiotics.
It’s a stool sample test in our area, although there are even breath tests to check for it and I know there is a blood test, but was that one of the things checked do you know?

OnNaturesCourse · 20/04/2023 23:30

I was checked for that. Came back negative.

Thank you for replying.

Doesn't explain your daughter's symptoms, but could yours be gallstones? I've got them and it sounds exactly the same. And they are so so common after having children. Sometines not picked up initially if they are too small or not being looked for!

OnNaturesCourse · 21/04/2023 00:22

I had my gallbladder scanned for them and nothing.
I've had my liver and stomach scanned too plus a pelvic scan (before falling pregnant) and everyone came up fine.

When I had similar symptoms to you and your daughter it turned out to be reflux problems following on from a hiatus hernia. This became clear only once I had a gastroscopy. Managed to get the symptoms under control with Proton Pump Inhibitors but it took a bit of experimentation. Lansoprazole didn't really have much effect but my GP tried my on Pantoprazole and I responded much better.

OnNaturesCourse · 21/04/2023 08:59

Yes, a few people have mentioned that and a couple of people I know actually have one.

Was your tummy tender to the touch?

Have they checked a stool sample?

OnNaturesCourse · 21/04/2023 09:37

For me, yes.

Have you tried any new foods, even new brands, that you might both have a mild allergy to?

RebeccaCloud9 · 21/04/2023 10:17

What kind of scan did you have? My gallstones were picked up in ultrasound and MRI but I have a friend who didn't get hers picked up until she had an endoscopy - she had months of waiting and tests, including MRI, same symptoms as you, until the endoscopy found them.

mrsfennel · 21/04/2023 10:19

H.pylori tests can be very unreliable, may be worth re testing.

OnNaturesCourse · 21/04/2023 11:15

I had a ultrasound.

Seen GP today and she believes it's a virus that's lingering. Apparently she's seen a bit of it lately.

I was tested for h pylori and it was coeliac disease. Maybe worth cutting out gluten for you both.

OnNaturesCourse · 21/04/2023 11:36

Good idea. Thank you. We are already lactose free so that'll be fun lol

No, it ached and I had the nausea plus problems swallowing but it wasn't sore to the touch.

OnNaturesCourse · 23/04/2023 10:48

Thanks.

Both of us have a sore to touch tummy at times.

GP has put DD on anti acids. Seems to be helping her. Had her first full meal in weeks last night.

I still feel sick but I'm wondering if my pregnancy sickness has just ramped up as my other symptoms eased.

Its very strange.

@OnNaturesCourse how are you and dd feeling?

OnNaturesCourse · 29/04/2023 11:42

I'm still really suffering by the end of most days. DD seems to be on the mend but she is on anti reflux medication 4 times a day and still won't eat a large amount.
