Late shift so cant sleep and this has been bugging me.

Loads of examples I am sure but the two that are currently pissing me off is "curating" and "sourcing".

When did "buy new clothes" become "curate a fresh wardrobe". I do not curate, I am not a curator. I need clothes, I buy clothes, I wear clothes. End of. Also clothes do no go off, they go out of fashion but if that is the case then you are buying the wrong clothes, timeless classics never go out of fashion. You do not need "fresh" clothes.

When did "going to do the big shop" become "sourcing ingedients". Has anyone ever said "I am going to Tesco to source our ingredients"? Have they fuck! If I am making stew or salad or lasagne or.....dog shit on toast (an option I have occassionally offered the kids when they were pissing me off about dinner options) I will go shopping and buy what I need. I do not "source" beef and vegetables, or lettuce or bloody pasta. I will concede that the dog shit may need more in the way of sourcing.

You need stuff. You buy stuff. Why the need for bullshit language to make this boring life task into an "experience".....actually that's another one, I didnt "experience" a restaurant or a stately home or whatever, I visited it.

Now I cant sleep even more because venting has made me more angry!

I cannot stand, yet cannot escape ‘nibbles’. Since when. Since fucking when and WHO decided that any sort of small amount of food will exclusively be referred to as ‘nibbles’. It makes my skin crawl and it is everywhere.

Do not get me started on adults referring to their stomach as their ‘tummy’. You’re forty years old, Sandra, you do not have a TUMMY bug. 🙄

Oxonresident · 19/04/2023 18:43

Haven't RTFT, so this may have been mentioned, and I'm not sure if it counts, but it really makes me angry, enough to shout at the radio or television- history presenters who talk in the present tense. No, Anne Boleyn is not being beheaded on the orders of Henry VIII because she is not producing a male heir and is probably having an affair.
She WAS beheaded on his orders because she DID NOT produce a male heir and probably HAD an affair. I'm fully aware that this is a very simplistic version of events😊before anyone starts correcting my knowledge of the Tudors.

The podcast "You're dead to me" is guilty of this. I enjoy listening, but also hate it

"Then I'll go in with this bronze eyeshadow...."

BellePeppa · 19/04/2023 18:51

I hate when people say ‘silly o’clock’ when they mean very early in the morning (or very late at night).

Mylobsterteapot · 19/04/2023 19:04

I have an irrational hatred for the word “waitlist”. It’s waitING list”. Or worse, “waitlisted”

I hate "reaching out" with a passion. I have had this said to my face and I wanted to shout No! You don't have to "reach" do you? You're standing right there.

Another one I've just started to see all over the place is "speaks to"

Im with you on both of those, but "reach out" especially enrages me.

Some days, I swear that next time I hear it, I'll swiftly reach out with with my fist and punch whoever said it in their mealy mouth.

And it gives me a Four Tops earworm for hours afterwards. I love the Four Tops, but not inside my head for the best part of a day.

Space.

curate airy, beautiful spaces in your home.

it’s a ROOM.

and piece.

this dress is a vintage piece I found on portobello road

ITS A DRESS

It's a second-hand dress, too!

And why do we now have to wear "a trouser" or "an ankle boot"? Is our underwear now "a knicker"?

sweatervest · 19/04/2023 19:09

there was a thing in a victoria wood sketch a million years ago and they called the new shopping centre "a pickwick-style purchasing experience" it still makes me lol now.

victoria wood was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy ahead of her time.

I see your wanky examples, and I raise you:

Vegan leather. That would be what we used to call plastic then?

Likewise "faux leather", which my DNiece thought was a) actual leather and b) pronounced "fox leather".

I nearly pissed myself, and I wasn't being mean to a young teen or someone with additional needs, she's in her early 20s and went to an excellent grammar school.

lightlypoached · 19/04/2023 19:18

And 'posh' new houses and flats that are 'architect designed'.

I mean aren't all houses designed by an architect ? Confused

This, and all of yours above, really get my goat. 🐐

Meem321 · 19/04/2023 19:23

I'm just being my 'authentic self's and 'speaking my truth'.

Jog on, Hun. Fucking hate those phrases.

Musicalsfan · 19/04/2023 19:25

I went to a big Christian conference last week. For years speakers have been talking about ‘digging deeper’ into the meaning of bible passages which is bad enough. This year they’ve started saying ‘pressing into’. At least digging meant a little bit of sense.

Newtrix · 19/04/2023 09:31

I can't bear 'Instagrammable' as if we live in a world where someone would go somewhere or buy something because it would look good on social media. I saw a hotel advertise themselves as this the other day and it made me books somewhere else.

Sadly, I think some people probably do just that. It's no longer about going somewhere nice, or buying something nice, they have to be seen to do it.

I also hate "socials" for social media.

Robinredface · 19/04/2023 19:33

Yes to all of these.

Curating, reaching out, gifting.....just no.

I have a friend who always uses 'DH and I' so instead of 'it's a gift from Tom and me' she'll say 'it's from Tom and I' Really grates, especially because I think she thinks it makes her sound cleverer.

LlynTegid · 19/04/2023 19:50

@sweatervest if only Victoria Wood was still here to make fun of some of the expressions on this thread and many others.

mach2 · 19/04/2023 20:15

When we're encouraged to "celebrate" something that isn't a birthday, wedding or public holiday.

I don’t mind people saying at sparrowfart though.

RadiantFem · 19/04/2023 20:28

A bit similar to “reach out” actually, and one that makes me cringe so much my arse cheeks clench is when people talk about
“Leaning in” 😖😣🤯
so pretentious
arrrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhh 😡

JackRosenberg · 19/04/2023 20:29

This more of a MN thing, but the constant use of the word 'cohort' is like nails down a black board for me.

JamSandle · 19/04/2023 20:29

'Safe space'

Battyfumworts · 19/04/2023 20:29

Today I saw a menu with “butter enriched puff pasty lid” it really riled me

it’s a steak and kidney pie ffs

Yes that’s annoying. If you took Tom away she wouldn’t say ‘it’s a gift from I’. (That’s how people should work out whether to say me or I).

Trivium4all · 19/04/2023 20:57

OMG, I have "found my people"! 😂

May I please add exaggerations such as "sneery" (used on this forum for "mildly disapproving"), and one of my favourites, "usage" where "use" (as a noun) is meant, and "utilise" where "use" (as a verb) is meant? Oh yes, and to "hate", or worse, "hate on", also generally meaning "dissaprove of/disagree with mildly"? Someone who disagrees with you is not a "hater".

I don't like exaggerated or imprecise language because it obscures meaning, or is a lazy substitution for actually making a point in an argument. Yes, language may change over time. But it would be good for this change to serve to enrich and clarify.

Why has no one mentioned "literally" yet? Is that so "last week"?

I hate when people say ‘silly o’clock’ when they mean very early in the morning (or very late at night).

I use "death o ' clock", which feels more accurate.
