Late shift so cant sleep and this has been bugging me.

Loads of examples I am sure but the two that are currently pissing me off is "curating" and "sourcing".

When did "buy new clothes" become "curate a fresh wardrobe". I do not curate, I am not a curator. I need clothes, I buy clothes, I wear clothes. End of. Also clothes do no go off, they go out of fashion but if that is the case then you are buying the wrong clothes, timeless classics never go out of fashion. You do not need "fresh" clothes.

When did "going to do the big shop" become "sourcing ingedients". Has anyone ever said "I am going to Tesco to source our ingredients"? Have they fuck! If I am making stew or salad or lasagne or.....dog shit on toast (an option I have occassionally offered the kids when they were pissing me off about dinner options) I will go shopping and buy what I need. I do not "source" beef and vegetables, or lettuce or bloody pasta. I will concede that the dog shit may need more in the way of sourcing.

You need stuff. You buy stuff. Why the need for bullshit language to make this boring life task into an "experience".....actually that's another one, I didnt "experience" a restaurant or a stately home or whatever, I visited it.

Now I cant sleep even more because venting has made me more angry!

Agree with all the above (mostly) but one benefit of wank speak is that it saves time identifying and binning the speakers of such drivel. They might as well go around with a flashing pink neon sign over their heads saying "complete wazzock".

Slide deck.

That's a new one for me. You use it to "showcase" things, I have learned.

Some years ago, I went on a trip to the U.S. My brother asked me to buy a pair of shoes for him from (at the time) a poncy brand hard to find outside the U.S.

Upon locating the poncy store on a poncy street in which no actual shoes were displayed because that wouldn't have been poncy enough, I was greeted enthusiastically by a very smiley assistant, but then I made him sad because instead of engaging in conversation about the products, I just pulled out my phone to show him my brother's text message and said "I want to buy This Particular Model in This Size and This Colour."

Meanwhile, another customer had come in and I overheard him asking another assistant something like, "So, how does this work?" and receiving the smiley reply, "Well, we'll bring out a selection of our pieces and you'll see which ones reach out to you..."

SinnerBoy · 19/04/2023 15:31

Ah, I hadn't twigged that it was the one you'd already posted.... sorree!

It's 'curated' for me too (mostly seen by me in those home interiors magazines to which I am guiltily devoted). They 'curate' their books or their ornaments, or even their sofa! And then they add a 'pop' of colour...

No, loves. You put things on a shelf and change the cushions.

I remember when interior designers used to create ‘tablescapes’. That was an an ‘occasional’ table with a tablecloth or two or sometimes even three, usually a lamp and then some bits and pieces : a Japanese bowl , an ‘interesting ‘ bit of rock, some flowers in a vase ( arrangement , probably the fore runner of the ‘tied bunch’ ) perhaps a pile of books ….David Hicks was ‘famous’ for them.

it’s always been around, it’s just that more people can describe their stuff or activities to more people thanks to the internet.

DoesItHaveKosovo · 19/04/2023 15:39

I don’t mind newborn as it’s used to specifically indicate a very young baby (12 weeks or less?) whereas “baby” could probably cover up to about 18mo

Lykia · 19/04/2023 15:40

The word "event"'as in I have an event coming up - turns out it's just drinks at the local pub or going out to dinner with friends. That's not an event. To me an event is something out of the ordinary. Not a normal every day outing.

Disclaimer: Even if you don't go out much it's still not an event.

SparklyBlackKitten · 19/04/2023 15:43

And on the other end of the spectrum here you are saying things like
"Wanky langauge" and "end of"..

I hear myself and yourself all the time now. It feels wrong and clunky. Nobody ever says me. I'm not sure on the correct use of myself, I guess I use me all the time, so please educate me
I have ear piercings not a curated ear
My pet hate is lived experience. What other experience are you going to have, a dead experience 🙄
Gifted I silently fume at

He told me. Not - he told myself.
I told him. Not - Myself told him.
I'll do it myself.
This should help with seeing why 'How can I help yourself today?' and so on are wrong.

It does get hard when you see words used wrongly all the time, though, especially when many people don't care or notice. I have started to avoid using substitute as it's used wrong so much I am now confused.

Ive just looked up tablescapes and it still about, with added opportunities

’With the holiday season approaching, it's the perfect time to channel the tablescaping trend with your Christmas table decor ideas. Here we've rounded up a host of our favorite looks to get you thinking about how you might dress your Christmas dining room later this month.

Holiday season = Christmas

table decor ideas= setting the table ,

channel = look in our magazine and copy some ideas but probably more cheaply , then pretend that’s what you meant because you are so original and inspired

rounded up a host of our favourite looks = had a quick look through the archives to find some pics which we don’t have to pay royalties on

a host = more than three

Dress your dining room = set the table ( again), maybe put some decorations up…..if you cant be bothered with string, just put the baubles in the plates for people to clear away before you put their dinner on them

i enjoyed that!

Just read a “beauty” —-One wants to weep.
Herts Live online newsletter re the fly pass by theRAF in honour of the coronation.
”SomeHerts residents may be interested to spectate the helicopters passing over areas in our county”.
It goes onto tell of several “practice rehearsals” of the fly pass.

At least it doesn’t talk aboutKing Charles being “coronated”. I first heard this expression on US podcasts but deplorably it is being used here now. For well over 1000 years our monarchs have been CROWNED. Why oh why doing a new term?

Andante57 · 19/04/2023 15:53

However, you then get the incorrect use of disinterested, which means neutral or having no strong feelings on a subject, but is often used to mean uninterested, as in having no interest in something.

Foad37 this is my pet hate - but I fear we’ve lost the battle.
‘Reached out’ comes a very close second.

Something that’s been getting on my tits for a while is people talking about ‘training’ when they mean ‘going to the gym’. This seems to be a new thing. I work in fitness and it’s only been quite recently that I’ve heard it used so much. Of course if someone is training for a marathon or a triathlon or whatever then, yes, they’re training, but if they’re just going to the gym and doing exercise there, then they are just exercising or doing a workout. not ‘training’. Even more annoying in the infinitive: ‘I train at the Leisure Centre twice a week’. 🙄

On a similar note, when did jogging become running? It was definitely called jogging in the 80s 😂

I remember reading a headline about a celebrity who had lost a lot of weight and then put it all back on. The phrase used was 'reclaims her curves' Confused
I hate the phrase 'work two jobs'. You don't work a job, you do a job.

Nope. I have never jogged. I ran in the 80s, am running in the 20s and all being well will be running IN my 80s!

I once saw a letter that had gone out from the very top of the office starting “Myself and my fellow Directors would…”. It is never correct to begin a sentence with Myself unless it is a sentence about the word myself. It’s “My fellow Directors and I would” or I and my fellow Directors would”.

And I’m sure you really are running! But there seem to be so many more people doing it these days and a lot of them are definitely jogging (if, as I suspect, jogging is a word for slow running).
