Can we muzzle all dogs in public yet (warning, graphic image of mauled hand)

“Whilst out walking a route that Tom has been on numerous times, he was the victim of an unprovoked attack by an unleashed dog. The dog attacked Tom multiple times as he tried to protect his puppy from being mauled by the dog and was left with horrific injuries. What is more horrifying, however, is that the owners of the dog didn’t try to help and fled the scene leaving Tom bleeding from his artery on his wrist.

Wife Katy recalls the moment that she opened the door to find her husband standing there after the attack: ‘‘Tom managed to get home where I had to tourniquet, to try to stem the bleeding, while waiting for 999. He lost several litres of blood in the short time until the ambulance arrived. Our two children were at home at the time and were woken up by the commotion. My 7-year-old was terrified and thought that her dad was doing to die from the blood loss.’’

Imagine it had been a child’s face, or neck, or little body, instead of an adult’s hand.

Absolutely sick of nothing being done to protect the public.

YABU - dogs are man’s best friend
YANBU - something needs to be done

One of the first signs of wolf like tendencies, hunting wild animals....

Be careful....

She’s an apex predator

Let’s tie all teenagers hands behind their backs in public because a few have engaged in knife crime.

would that be reasonable?

Re the wolf thing.

Most pet dogs don't behave like wolves, of course not. They are socialised and live among humans. But. If humans were wiped out tonight in a (peculiarly specific, admittedly) plague, dogs would revert to wolflike behaviour as soon as they got hungry. They would pack, bring down prey and kill. That's pretty much all dogs, from your cuddly Labrador to your little terrier. Actually, ESPECIALLY your little terrier ( said as the owner of a terrier who is currently cuddled up asleep in bed with me).

Even if 90% of humans were wiped out tomorrow, there would still be a percentage on mumsnet desperately moaning about dogs roaming around.

And the poor service in understaffed shops...

So your 'anyone carrying any sort of knife to a barbecue or picnic' is breaking the law and could be arrested
Make it a fork then. Not illegal yet can do much damage if use by someone out of control.

No dogs are not human indeed. They statistically are much less likely to hurt fellow animals and humans. Yet they should all be penalised.

They are not humans but they have feelings. They experience pain, discomfort, upset, confusion and depression. That's why I would never agree to put a muzzle on my dog. They dont deserve the restrictions it would impose on them unnecessarily.

I know most humans would too

You mean like cannibalism?

Crocodilekneecaps · 22/04/2023 12:41

We’d all resort to survival mode, but it’s not the apocalypse and I’m not muzzling my dog

The Apocalypse will come with four horsemen and a pack of feral chihuahuas.

What a fatuous comment. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domesticationoffthedog - from that article
"The genetic divergence between the dog's ancestor and modern wolves occurred between 40,000 and 30,000 years ago, just before or during the Last Glacial Maximum"

40,000 years ago - i.e. so long ago it's practically irrelevant

Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and wolfs (Canis lupus lupus) STILL can interbreed - the “father of German Shepherds” (long time ago - whole 120 years!) was one quarter wolf - just some more "irrelevant" facts ...

About as reasonable as putting whole countries in house arrest over a virus as bad as a bad seasonal flu. You expect reason from scared people?

What breed of dog ?

Ersorrywhatnow · 22/04/2023 19:22

My ‘wolf’ has hunted down all DS sweaty socks he’s left strewn about the house. She’s a killer! A handy killer, but a vicious hunter all the same…

Crocodilekneecaps · 22/04/2023 20:42

Mine has been digging in the sand pit
