Can we muzzle all dogs in public yet (warning, graphic image of mauled hand)

“Whilst out walking a route that Tom has been on numerous times, he was the victim of an unprovoked attack by an unleashed dog. The dog attacked Tom multiple times as he tried to protect his puppy from being mauled by the dog and was left with horrific injuries. What is more horrifying, however, is that the owners of the dog didn’t try to help and fled the scene leaving Tom bleeding from his artery on his wrist.

Wife Katy recalls the moment that she opened the door to find her husband standing there after the attack: ‘‘Tom managed to get home where I had to tourniquet, to try to stem the bleeding, while waiting for 999. He lost several litres of blood in the short time until the ambulance arrived. Our two children were at home at the time and were woken up by the commotion. My 7-year-old was terrified and thought that her dad was doing to die from the blood loss.’’

Imagine it had been a child’s face, or neck, or little body, instead of an adult’s hand.

Absolutely sick of nothing being done to protect the public.

YANBU - something needs to be done

Why? No she isn't.

LimitIsUp · 19/04/2023 22:18

@lfYouLikePinaCoIadas what possessed you to share that link? Are you okay? I've reported it

LuvSmallDogs · 19/04/2023 22:30

@Littleelffriend , please do tell me what problems my dog is causing?

Whammyyammy · 19/04/2023 22:30

If a dog is on and lead, I don't see the need for a muzzle.
Sadly idiot's let their fur babies run wild to do what they want.

mostlysunnywithshowers · 19/04/2023 22:37

Wow, some real hostility towards people who have some justified anxieties over being approached by strange dogs.

Has it ever occurred to you dog lovers that some people have strong allergic reactions to animal hair and maybe thats why they don't want a dog jumping on them? A child in my DS class is so allergic, we've even been asked to brush dog hair off the kids uniforms before they go into class.

If dog owners continue to justify the unjustifiable, then all that will happen is more hostility towards all dogs, good and bad.

So how about take some responsibility and wise up.

LuvSmallDogs · 19/04/2023 22:45

@mostlysunnywithshowers an off lead dog isn't the same as a dog jumping people, it is simply an off lead dog.

SnackSizeRaisin · 19/04/2023 22:48

There are just far too many dogs around. The constant piles of shit everywhere bother me more than the risk of being attacked to be honest. If I were in charge I'd ban certain breeds completely and have much stronger rules about where they can be walked and stronger enforcement of fouling penalties. In many countries all large breeds have to be muzzled, and dogs are only allowed off lead on private land or designated areas.

C0LO · 20/04/2023 07:01

I tried to have a reasonable discussion on a similar post. Explained what I do to keep my dog safe and away from
other people and how I was happy to adhere to any sensible solutions or compromises re owning a dog. I was told the money I’d spent on training would have been better off being spent on a child (I don’t have kids so a random one then?) and that I should just put my dog to sleep - by 3 different people. This, I’m assuming, is because he’d been badly let down by previous owners (abused by those all important humans). I don’t think it’s always the dog “nutters” that need to think about their actions. These threads and the absurd suggestions on them do nothing to make me care more about other people’s viewpoints or feelings.

VincentVaguer · 20/04/2023 07:06

There are a good few people on these threads who say that they want dogs to be poisoned or that they like to use secret sonic whistles to upset passing dogs. I'd rather be leapt upon by 10 slobbery labradors than meet a single one of those people in RL and I genuinely think they must be a bit ill.

It's not that there just are too many dogs, there are too many people crammed in. Town planners favour high density development, green spaces disappear and are not enough.

It's the human population that's increasing, the dogs are secondary to this.

HyacinthBookay · 20/04/2023 07:23

Perhaps we should send all the dogs to Rwanda.

BorisisaLune · 20/04/2023 07:32

VincentVaguer · 19/04/2023 13:12

No. My kids and I genuinely wouldn't give a shit if a dog ran up to our picnic. We are used to moving at the speed of light to protect our food from greedy dogs, we own a couple. If the dogs were friendly we'd be delighted to see them. And that's why we have a nicer time when we leave the house.

So still no criticism of the dog owner who allowed their dog to eat off the plate of a another diner?
In your opinion, just another crazy batshit woman who should be delighted to share an expensive meal with a strangers mutt.

You are typical of the sort of dog owner that loves their hounds and thinks that everyone else has to love them too.

You are happy to have a dog eat from your picnic table, so therefore everyone else has too be happy to do the same.

The bad news is that your attitude will ensure tougher restrictions on dog ownership going forward, that you wont take any notice off but responsible owners will :(

If you live in an area with poor outdoor space, then perhaps think about the life the Dog will have and don't get one?

C0LO · 20/04/2023 07:41

Yes, and also if there’s poor outdoor space don’t have kids there either.

I'm sorry, but where did I say I let my dogs eat people's picnics? Having a relaxed attitude to dogs nicking my sandwiches doesn't mean I will "ensure tougher restrictions on dogs going forward", don't be utterly ridiculous.

'I work in mental health at a senior level, and don’t think accusing people of MH issues is on at all'

Working in MH certainly doesn't exclude you from with having MH issues or sounding like you have them in posts. Your anxiety about dogs bleeds through every post, or at the very least you have some issues with 'cleanliness'.
Not to mention the talking about 'dog babies'.
Objectively if you read all your posts together ( with your experience in MH) you'd probably conclude that the poster was a little obsessed on this subject, and clearly knows little about dog owners.

I love dogs. I have a dog. I hate dog owners.

The lazy ones are one thing, they'll always do what they want.

The sanctimonious fuckwits are another.

But I live very rurally (least densely populated area in England) and there’s still a load of dog shit and that’s because it’s an area of outstanding natural beauty so people come with their dogs and leave a mess, attack the sheep, disturb the ground nesting birds and wildlife and then go in their merry way.

Maybe learn some self love?

24KaratCucumber · 20/04/2023 09:14

Self love and hating myself...

Maybe the owners so fiercely defensive could learn a little respect for others instead of labelling them as mentally unwell, anxious or suggesting they never leave the house...

LuvSmallDogs · Yesterday 21:42

Muzzle my dog? No. And she's not always on lead in public either.

The French Bulldog which bit me was on a lead... My Lab is usually off the lead, unless it's an area with shops, or lots of people with food etc.

Neededanewuserhandle · 20/04/2023 09:22

There should definitely be licences, some dog owners are thick and rough as are their dogs.

Do you think those owners will dutifully toddle along to the Post Office or wherever and get their dog licence?

Ersorrywhatnow · 20/04/2023 09:54

@lfYouLikePinaCoIadas

I’m really sure how that link is constructive to any discussions around dogs in public spaces. Most dog owners don’t fuck their dogs.
