To warn you about passports?

Hello,
i don’t know whether this is genuinely common knowledge (I expect so and I’ve just sailed by) that you need a passport issued less than ten years ago to travel to most EU places now. Mines still well in date but was issued over ten years ago on the day I travel.

desperately trying to get an appointment to get it renewed - does anyone have any experience of doing this recently or any anecdotal knowledge of how long it has taken ordering on the normal service? I know you have to allow ten weeks.

(and yes, I know I’ve been silly)

thanks!

You generally need to have 6 months left to expiry to travel anywhere

Also we needed emergency appt last aug- some tv ages getting an appt using online booking ( sit watching the pc as passport office renewed appts all the time) got appt on sat, passport arrived Thursday evening

The issues is you need 9 and 1/2 years from
date of issue. Some UK passports are marked as valid for 10 1/2 years but EU countries won’t accept this.

Passport service currently has delays due to strikes.

It’s three months (I would have had six months anyway)

We renewed recently. Took less than 2 weeks

Theres a very useful website, passportwaitingtime.co.uk, that uses crowdsourced data to work out average waiting times.

To travel to the Schengan area you currently need a passport less than 10 years old with 3 months left on it on day you plan to depart. You also can't be there for more than 90 days in 6 months.

Other countries have other rules (including some in the EU but not Schnegan area!)

This is very helpful, thank you all for taking the time to reply!

DD3 and I both renewed last year at different times and both had our new passports back in two weeks.

There are strikes at the moment which may delay things, but it isn't always the doom and gloom portrayed in the media.

Had to check this the other day, as travelling to EU soon.
Yep, passport needs to be issued less than 10 years prior to entry, and you need at least 3 months left on passport expiry date when you return.
Those dates are independent of each other, i.e. it is okay if you have an older passport with additional months on it.
