To despise HMRC

Neededanewuserhandle · 18/04/2023 08:33

I have a job and I am receiving a small regular pension. The total is about £56K. HMRC has issued me with new tax codes - D1 for each. This means I must pay 45% tax on everything. It is clearly wrong, but II cannot get through to anyone to get them to correct their error. They refuse to accept any contact except paper letter or phone call. They are such a hateful incompetent arrogant organisation.

Have you emailed them? They usually reply.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/04/2023 08:40

Wait times on the phone are not long, I've always found them to be very helpful. Emails replied to within 24 hours also.

BMW6 · 18/04/2023 08:41

Do you also get State Pension?

Oncetheystartschool · 18/04/2023 08:42

I'm a tax accountant and I've found most people that work at HMRC to be kind and helpful. This time of year the waiting times on phone lines are not too bad. Try calling first thing in the morning.

Flamingogirl08 · 18/04/2023 08:42

Never had a problem ringing them to be honest. You can also use your government gateway for any tax code queries I believe

determinedtomakethiswork · 18/04/2023 08:43

I find it to be really useful on the phone but about one in every three letters I send to them doesn't arrive. The last guy I spoke to said that when you post something, call them two weeks later to check, it's been scanned in.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/04/2023 08:43

Why do you feel it's wrong? Your marginal tax rate is 43,%. You will be taxed at 26,% on your primary income and 43% for any second third income. Looks correct to me.

Greensleevevssnotnose · 18/04/2023 08:44

Me too, although business tax not personal tax

HappyHolidai · 18/04/2023 08:45

Use your Personal Tax Account and fill in the form there about changing tax codes. You need to explain in a lot of detail but turnaround time isn't too bad.

Neapolitanicecream · 18/04/2023 08:46

I agree with you have tried over 20 times to get through on the phone. Awful organisation. Going round in circles I’m surprised at the replies here though !! Makes you wonder.

You are wrong - I don't know where you're getting those figures, but you are wrong and the tax codes are wrong. It should be 1257L for my job and BR (or Dn) for my pension.

I find the old fashioned written letter works best with HMRC.

thats what I do now. I don't do "bots" - I only deal with humans now.

Not blaming the phone staff but they wouldn't get so many calls if they didn't do stupid things with tax codes - this isn't the first time.

I've always found them hugely helpful on the phone too

DRS1970 · 18/04/2023 09:01

I just email them. They are a bit slow to reply, but always do.

Newyeardietstartstomorrow · 18/04/2023 09:06

They made a mess of my tax when my business went limited. I still had to pay my bulk interim tax whilst now also paying PAYE at a rate double what it should have been. I'm 6 months later now paying what I should in PAYE, but hopefully will get my bulk interim forced overpayment back in January next year. Its a few thousand, but I'm lucky that we are in the second half of our working lives so have savings behind us.

Thanks - everything that can be updated has been - but I cannot change my own tax code (that is fair enough!) or ask them to change it using that.

I’m finding them extremely irritating too. Long phone queues (1 hour+) then being given incorrect information.

We are waiting for a substantial tax refund, having first contacted them in January, we are still waiting…..
