To despise HMRC

I have a job and I am receiving a small regular pension. The total is about £56K. HMRC has issued me with new tax codes - D1 for each. This means I must pay 45% tax on everything. It is clearly wrong, but II cannot get through to anyone to get them to correct their error. They refuse to accept any contact except paper letter or phone call. They are such a hateful incompetent arrogant organisation.

If your salary is over £50270 then 1257L for your salary and D0 for your pension will work fine.

If your salary is less than £50270 then the 1257L and D0 combination will mean you pay (slightly) too much tax - and you will have to claim a refund after the end of the tax year.

Another option that works as long as your pension is less than £12570 is to have the pension at "NT" (no tax payable) and to reduce your allowance on your job by the amount of your pension. eg. If the pension is £9500/year then the codes that would mean you pay the correct amount of tax are NT for the pension and 307L for the salary. You will start paying 20% tax on your salary on earnings over £3070 and 40% tax on your salary on earnings over 3070+37700= £40770. This used to be the favoured method as pension earnings tended to be more predictable for the year than salary.

If the pension is above £12570 then it can still be done with NT for the pension and a "K" code (negative allowance) for the salary, but you said the pension was small so this is unlikely to be needed in this case.

Perhaps there was an element of frustration. I am not a tax expert, but I know enough to know I shouldn't be paying 45% tax with no personal allowance on all my income. That poster (who I notice hasn't returned) posted the most ridiculous claim that it was correct and then sought to back it up with an irrelevant link and claimed to be some kind of tax expert - it was like someone telling me to put water in the fuel filler of my car - so obviously wrong that 99% of people would know. If I was aggressive to that person, then I must confess that I don't really care as their contribution was patronising, totally incorrect and frankly, just nonsense. Maybe this is like when exDP used to tell me off for being rude on the phone when I was called by scammers - generally I am polite to people, but I see no need to be polite to criminals.

Totally agree. It was a bizarre reply. I hope that poster isn't genuinely a tax accountant 😂

OP I spent most of my working life dealing with pensions taxation. Believe me you are most probably one of thousands.

My contempt for HMRC (& before them the IR) knows no bounds.

My husband called just after 8 this morning. After going through all the NI number stuff he was told that they couldn’t help him today and go ring back another time 🙄

He rang back and is still on hold now 🤬
