Strawberries are pretty much a necessity if I want my daughter to eat fruit, as she's allergic to everything but strawberries, black & red grapes, pears and cherries.

If she wasn't so limited I wouldn't buy nearly so many, as they are expensive for the amount you get.

Flowerly · 17/04/2023 19:49

Eh?

DelphiniumBlue · 17/04/2023 19:49

Any fruit is a luxury out of season. Not sure what being middle class has to do with it, you can be middle class and skint.

Comedycook · 17/04/2023 19:50

Strawberries were £2 a box the other week in my local supermarket. They are available to anyone who has £2.

NoAprilFool · 17/04/2023 19:50

They’re quite expensive, even in season (and no point buying out of season as they taste of nothing)

Albiboba · 17/04/2023 19:51

I think an exotic imported fruit or veg is an ‘unnecessary’ item so in that sense it’s definitely a luxury.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 17/04/2023 19:51

Fresh and out of season yes, luckily DD loves "warm strawberries" which are just frozen strawberries microwaved till they are defrosted and squishy/juicy (about 1 and a half minutes).

They make a great porridge topper but DD just eats them plain.

Tarantullah · 17/04/2023 19:53

Berries are always expensive in winter, this year has obviously been more savage with the increases and the cost of living in general but they will most likely be cheaper over summer. They've always been one of the more expensive fruits, also of course one of the more popular ones with little ones especially. I'd say they're definitely not affordable for many at the moment but I don't know if that pushes them up to being the preserve of the middle class...

Lockheart · 17/04/2023 19:54

In the sense that in order for you to have strawberries there is, for most of the year, a complex and multifaceted journey to get them to you which includes flying them hundreds or thousands of miles, then yes.

Probably not when it's summer and you can grow them in your own garden though.

boschbabe · 17/04/2023 19:54

I don’t see them as a luxury item however I think they are quite pricey.
My DC had them in their lunchbox every day until recently but I have now changed to bananas as the strawberries were going soft/uneaten.

Blort · 17/04/2023 19:55

If you eat them everyday and always have some in the fridge then yes I think thats a luxury outside of 2 months of the year when there's an excess.

Not that there's any problem in having luxury items!

LubaLuca · 17/04/2023 19:57

Out of season they are an unnecessary expense. In summer though, when you can buy a box for the price of a bunch of bananas, or grow your own, they're an affordable choice.

PinkFootstool · 17/04/2023 19:57

Out of season fruit is always a luxury. We are incredibly privileged in the UK that most fruits are available all year round and whilst they may cost more than we want to pay, they are remarkably reasonably priced.

Buying them in the summer from a local source isn't expensive. Buying them in December from Spain where they've been grown in greenhouses is comparatively expensive due to the way they are grown then transported.

Xrays · 17/04/2023 19:57

If you can afford them, enjoy them. We buy blueberries and strawberries a lot because they’re the only fruits Ds aged 11 will eat (he has autism). But yep they’re expensive. I think all fruit is expensive though, if you’re on the bones of your arse you’re more likely to choose a packet of biscuits or some cheap multipack crisps for a snack as they don’t go off and you can keep them a long time.

BloodyMarys · 17/04/2023 19:59

I do think they are a luxury item. They are really expensive although Tesco finest were 30p cheaper than normal ones recently. I buy them as it’s the only fruit my dd will eat.

Letspovertyplayagain · 17/04/2023 20:00

It wasn't me who said this!

BirdChirp · 17/04/2023 20:03

I have a fair amount of disposable income but do see them as more of a treat item than an everyday thing.

declutteringmymind · 17/04/2023 20:05

I only get them in season as the ones out of season are awful.

dietcokelime · 17/04/2023 20:06

I adore strawberries - the ones that come in the huge blue pallet style boxes in booths are my absolute fave! I'd probably class them as a "luxury" item purely because they're not a necessity?

LunaNorth · 17/04/2023 20:06

We only ever had them in summer when I were a lass, in a brown paper bag that was always soggy with juice at the bottom.

They were an absolute treat, and tasted absolutely beautiful.

The massive El Santa bollocks you get all year round these days taste like chewing on frozen cotton wool. Crap.

LunaNorth · 17/04/2023 20:07

In fact, ‘Santa Bollocks’ are a good name for them, given they’re bright red.

CrazyCatsRock · 17/04/2023 20:07

They’re a luxury when they’re out of season. It’s better in so many ways to eat local.

FourTeaFallOut · 17/04/2023 20:08

I'm not sure how secure my claim to middle class is but I don't consider strawberries a luxury expense. A bit tasteless and hard at the moment though.

DiamondLine · 17/04/2023 20:08

My DSis is still fuming about the time her DS when asked "what foods are treats" at school replied "strawberries" and was told no, strawberries aren't a treat. You know what they were getting at, but still.

£2 a box, yes to me a treat, in the same way that spending £2 on chocolate would be.

Blaueblumen · 17/04/2023 20:08

Any fruit is a luxury out of season

This!!

In summer strawberries grow in abundance in the UK and taste amazing. They are cheaper and fresh then! I ONLY buy them when they're grown locally in the UK

But outside of summer? They get harvested unripe and get flown around the world... and the taste of nothing but cost a fortune..?!
