🤷 genuinely wondering now.....

Like most berries, they are definitely expensive compared to other fruit. I bought 4 large pears and a large box of satsumas for the same price as 2 small tubs of raspberries today.

I never notice a huge drop in the price of strawberries in summer (in Ireland).

Newuswr · 17/04/2023 20:41

i think to summarise, the purchase of strawberries are not an indicator of class.

IseePatterns · 17/04/2023 20:43

you can be middle class and skint.

Indeed! MN seems to substitute 'middle class' for 'rich'. You see it all over here.

MoltenLasagne · 17/04/2023 20:44

Strawberries out of season are not a luxury as they taste of nothing.

Letspovertyplayagain · 17/04/2023 20:45

@Blaueblumen my carbon footprint is incredibly low. Are you always so sanctimonious! It's costs a lot to be organic and seasonal! Pears can be as cheap as chips but my kids won't eat them!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/04/2023 20:45

I think they are a bit.

I tend to only buy them in the summer when they are actually nice - and cheaper as pps have said.

I do always think we’re having a treat when we have them though.

Obviously.... Working class people subsist in a diet of monster munch, pop tarts and pot noodle. They'd have anaphylaxis if one so much as touched their lips!

Middle class people eat strawberries with their quinoa and avacado for supper.

Valerie65 · 17/04/2023 20:48

@declutteringmymind I agree. They're hard, bitter & tasteless. I've recently stopped buying them as they're not worth the expense to me out of season.

Easterfunbun · 17/04/2023 20:50

I bought some from tesco for 1.79 something like that anyway they were fucking shit. Tasted awful.

User1794537 · 17/04/2023 20:50

They don't taste very luxurious out of season

fullofeasterchocolate · 17/04/2023 20:51

I think it's interesting how tastes have changed and broadened. There are loads of food items these days which are seen as standard but would have been regarded as exotic when I was a child in the early 80s. Grapes were something you only had when unwell or for dinner parties; strawberries in the summer only and were a treat unless it was those few weeks of a year when there was a complete glut; blueberries simply didn't exist.

Has this come from the recent post about benefit increases? The OP was pleased that she would be able to afford to buy strawberries for her daughter?

I think so

Letspovertyplayagain · 17/04/2023 20:54

@gerbilcrocus 😏

Hankunamatata · 17/04/2023 20:54

Out of season yep. Too pricey as kids eat loads - more cost efficient to buy apples, bananas and pears.

Charlotteandwilbur · 17/04/2023 20:57

Not remotely a luxury item 😂 standard packed lunch item here. We buy more in the summer when they’re in season but we’re hardly breaking the bank buying a punnet or two of strawberries, the hyperbole on this thread!!

Ponderingwindow · 17/04/2023 20:59

Out of season, I don’t know if luxury item is quite the right term, but they do get very expensive. They are still priced at a point that they could be a reachable indulgence for many people and still affordable for others.

Letspovertyplayagain · 17/04/2023 20:59

@Hankunamatata I do a cycle. But the kids refuse pears I've tried over the years. I don't like them either tbh pears. But If I give them too much of something they stop eating it entirely!!! So I'm always wary 😁

I would guess I was raised lower-MC? Strawberries were treats when I grew up, served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, certainly not part of our regular fruit and veg shop.

It's the same for us now, "regular" fruit and veg snacks are the cheaper ones - cherry toms, cucumber, apples, banana - strawberries and raspberries are treats.

Letspovertyplayagain · 17/04/2023 21:02

@Charlotteandwilbur ha ha it's surreal. I am tempted to walk to the shops tomorrow and see how many people have strawberries in their trolley. I mean despite some outraged people on here, the supermarkets always seem to sell them 🧐

OP posts:
Charlotteandwilbur · 17/04/2023 21:04

Loads of trolleys will have them in. It’s only on mumsnet that all these middle class people only buy strawberries a couple of time a year because they are so luxurious 😂

Phos · 17/04/2023 21:04

No.

Charlotteandwilbur · 17/04/2023 21:05

Don’t get me wrong if I was on the bones of my arse I wouldn’t be buying them but that’s not the vibe people are giving off on this thread.

Letspovertyplayagain · 17/04/2023 21:06

@Charlotteandwilbur 😁.

I have to say, it's depressing how few people are talking about food miles on this thread.

To be honest, with an autistic child with an extremely limited diet, when strawberries are the single fruit he will eat (no vegetables), food miles are the least of my worries. I buy what he will eat.
